Hi all. Fishing season is finally beginning with the weather warming up there is no better place than to be on the water.

The Ham tournament is on the 26th and 27th of this month. So make sure you get yourselves entered and be in to win a ham for christmas. I can guarantee you they are the best hams around.

I would appreciate if people could please email me photos for the cover and back page, as I need these each month.

Presidents SpielHello Members,

Here we are again with the completion of another month. The weather is doing it’s best to convince us that summer is here, but looking out the window right now I am not convinced what with a strong Norwest and rain, it doesn’t look very pretty! Hopefully this is only short lived and we will get some sunshine and lots of fishing soon.

Must say though, the last few days along the beach have been spectacular in regard to both weather and fish catches from the local kontiki boys. I suspect some of the take home quantities have bordered on the excess such has been the fishing. Put simply, good sized snapper have been coming in regularly along with continued showings of gurnard. The better catches are still being got out at the 2-2.5km mark, so the fish are not yet in real close but can’t be far away.

A weigh master evening was held recently with the Mercury Bay Weigh Master coming down to the club and passing on a few pointers on how to do and identification tips for our members. An awesome presentation was done and much knowledge was gleaned by those attending.

The Hamill’s Trout Tournament was held as scheduled earlier this month. Thanks to those that entered. We ended up with good entries and although some anglers reported hard fishing, 102 fish were weighed over the tournament. Top Land based fish was a 3.42kg Brown Jack. Top boat fish was a Rainbow hen tipping the scales at 3.24kg.

A big thank you to Stacey at Hamills Tauranga for looking after us with prize vouchers along with Proslab (Steve and Tracee Burling) for a late sponsorship of the heaviest fish weighed on Saturday.

Not to be forgotten, but the sausages enjoyed at the bbq weigh in on Saturday were from that wonderful place that is world famous in The Mount, Col’s Butchery and Deli. Thanks Col.

My idea of sorting out a couple of cocky trout anglers didn’t quite happen as all but one of the fish I hooked managed to release themselves before getting to the net. Guess sorting out the cocky ones will just have to wait a little longer! I will persevere on this matter!

The Cols’ Butchery Ham Tournament is just around the corner (more details in the newsletter), which means you all need to get organised and get out there to catch these hams. 70 odd hams just in time for the HoHo time. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it this year, but Scott (Binge) has got things under control and will sort you all out and get you on the water. Good luck with the fishing in this one!

The Blue Water Tournament is coming up quickly and all early bird entries are well and truly in. Close off is not far away so make sure you get the paper work done. Responses for the early bird entries haven’t happened yet but you will receive these in the next few weeks.

Not sure if I have mentioned it, but our Conservation Officer and myself are off on another fishing junket. This time we are heading for the eastern side of Africa in the hunt for Black Marlin. We have got 10 days of fishing booked in so here’s hoping for some good photos and stories of the trip.

I will keep you posted as I believe we may have access to email while there.

Don’t forget to get down to the club and enjoy the facilities that await you. We are on raffles the week of 30th November and again the week of 21st December, so come on down and catch up.

CURRENT LINES - OCTOBER 2016 ISSUE

What we are all hoping for this season, is playing on the radio right now, “Mr Blue Sky’ an “ELO” classic!

From Australia - they mightn’t be able to play good rugby but their sword fishery is a step up! First Swordfish tag has just popped off!! It detached about 2 months early, but has had a good swim staying on for 187 days. It was tagged off St. Helens, Tasmania in April and detached due east of Norfolk Island in September!

Labor Weekend sees the “Whakatane Sportfishing Club” celebrate their 50thJubilee. That’s right 50 years ago a group of like-minded fishers got together and formed this iconic club, congratulations and have a good time in the club celebrations.

Another from the birthday club. Shaun Braithwaite has landed a Broadbill off the vessel “Sweet Deal” weighing in at 90.2kg.20 pound or 9.1kg, which sounds bigger? Well there appears to be the odd one or three being caught at present; Flat Rock in the Gulf, Aldermans, Ahipara and Houhora.

Warkworth Gamefish Club - Yesterday at 5:18pm, 19/10/2016 - Nicola Hoverd has joined the club! The 20lb club that is, and at 82.5cm it will be hard to beat for this month. Seems that there are some good anglers and fish about in the Warkworth club.

Page 8: Newsletter November 2016 - Mount Maunganui Sports …down to the club and passing on a few pointers on how to do and identification tips for our members. An awesome presentation was

From Houhora - Local member Mason Elliott got himself a nice 9.65kg (21.27lb) snapper today (19/10/2016). Fishing was great with a few big ones getting to live another day.  Congratulations Mason. Kawhia - Today 19/10/2016 a Courtesy weighed Snapper. Caught today while fishing out from Kawhia by Bradley Laughton, from Papakura.  Bradley was fishing from the charter boat Crazy Horse.  His Snapper weighed 12.470 kg.

The AGM and Conference went smoothly. The depth and breadth of experience that our delegates bring to conference allows for insightful, no nonsense analysis and resolution of matters. We were pleased to hear Chris Boyle, Marketing Manager for ITM, outline details of an exciting partnership and sponsorship program for ITM with Council and LegaSea. In 2017 ITM will team up with Simrad as joint major sponsors for the Nationals.  Keep these dates free, 18th to 25th February, 2017.

Snapper fishing, your opinion matters -  In 2013 there was unprecedented media coverage of the recreational snapper fishery.  These highlighted problems with the fisheries management system and the need for more inclusive decision making.  A Snapper 1 management plan has been drafted by a mixed group of fishing representatives, including our NZSFC Fisheries Management team, and the Ministry for Primary Industries.  Now it's time to find out what you think about some of the key issues.

Please click on the Snapper 1 Questionnaire to give us your opinion before 28th October. Your answers will be summarised alongside other feedback. A summary will be given to the Ministry, and we’ll send you the results as soon as soon as possible.  We encourage you to share your ideas on what needs to be done to rebuild snapper stocks and protect our marine environment.

More detail on the Snapper Management Plan is available here

MY DREAM TRIP TO MONGOLIA: TO GO LAKE FISHING & MEET THE REINDEER PEOPLE By Toni Peck

Unlike hubby John, I love my intrepid journeys and it was with great anticipation that I departed NZ for China on my own, to begin a three week Trans-Siberian train excursion in September. This excursion left from Beijing, going through the Gobi Desert in the South of Mongolia then through the north of Mongolia onto Eastern Russia, and from there through Siberia onto Moscow in the West. This would cover a bit under 5,000 miles.

Before departure from NZ, I pre-booked all stopovers and tours following some very time consuming research. My favourite tour was to to be in Mongolia, where I would take a road trip of around 700 kms from the capital city of Ulaanbaatar to Lake Huvsgol in the North. First and foremost I was looking forward to spending time at the lake with reindeer people where I would share in their everyday lives, namely their belief in Shamanism which is very different from my own, and riding their reindeers.

Second most I was looking forward to doing some fishing in this pristine lake. I never researched what I might catch, anything would do. I would just be happy to be on a boat with rod in hand, enjoying the crystal clear water where you can see down to 30 meters.

And so, let the tour begin! On arrival at the Mongolian Ulaanbaatar City train station, I was met by the tour driver who transferred me to a luxury hotel. I thought it was unusual that he wasn’t accompanied by a guide especially since he himself had limited English, but I just fobbed it off when I was told the guide ‘was busy’. I asked the driver how many were coming on the tour, and was told that I was the only one. This was a bit of a shock as it was advertised to take up to fifteen people. Oh well never mind I thought, one consolation is that I’ll be getting all the attention. Next up would be lunch and dinner which were on the program for today but none was offered. Hmm, lucky I wasn’t hungry.

The driver indicated that tomorrow morning would be early 5am start to make the long road-trip north to Muran City which is an hour short of the lake. So I ordered wakeup call for 4am, and was ready early but by 5.45am there was no pickup and I was concerned. So I asked the hotel receptionist to ring a contact number which I had, and eventually the driver turned up at nearly 6.30am, but with no guide. Guide was “stuck in the countryside, his car has broken down.” So we were to make the long road-trip alone and the guide would meet us at our destination tonight.

Tonight I was supposed to stay in a tourist Ger camp, but I was taken to a rundown old hotel. Driver told me it was the best in town (whether or not it was I don’t know). I asked him where the guide was and reply was ‘he will be arriving in the morning’. We went out for a lovely dinner, and he indicated that we would have breakfast at my hotel at

10am next morning, and then for me it was early night.. No idea where he stayed, must have had mates there somewhere.

Next morning, I was in the lobby before 10am waiting, waiting and the driver bowled up half an hour late with big smiles as if nothing was wrong and still there was no guide. He could tell by the look on my face that I wasn’t happy. Actually I was feeling a bit worried about how all this was going to end up. When asked where the guide was, his reply was “He will meet us at the Lake tonight”. Then he indicates ‘Let’s go’, with no mention of breakfast at the hotel, so I just said ‘breakfast’. He nodded and showed me the exit door, as if to say we’re off. So again I repeated ‘breakfast’ and with that I got the same response so then it was “BREAKFAST!” I was furious, besides the restaurant actually looked quite decent and I was hungry. Reluctantly he led me to the restaurant that by now was closed, however fortunately he was able to order for me, but never asked what I wanted. When it was served he sat there and watched me eat (he must have already eaten at his mates place). It was so humiliating, however lucky for me he had ordered something to my liking.

So today it was just an hour’s drive to the Lake, and then I’d be fishing. But in my mind I’m querying this suspect guide, beginning to think he doesn’t even exist. The lake was just stunning, it was end of tourist season and there weren’t many people around. The ger camp was fairly empty, and driver checked me into a ger which was next to the receptionist’s, and a great possie right next to the lake with a fabulous view. I settled in but it wasn’t a good feel. Actually I was feeling sick in the stomach about this phantom guide and where it was all leading to.

Time passed and it was about mid-afternoon before the driver said we were

Page 12: Newsletter November 2016 - Mount Maunganui Sports …down to the club and passing on a few pointers on how to do and identification tips for our members. An awesome presentation was

going on a boat tour. Well that put a smile on my face until he added “BUT NO FISHING”. I think I am actually going to vomit, I am so angry, although by now it didn’t really surprise me, there have been way too many anomalies going on with this tour. So with that I insisted “FISHING!!!’. The driver didn’t know what to do, obviously there was no fishing trip organised. Then he was on the phone, time passed and when he approached me asking “Where is your rod?” in perfect English, I saw red. I couldn’t believe my ears. Surely he didn’t expect me to bring a rod all the way from New Zealand! I am distressed, feel worse than ever. Now the receptionist is on the phone looking for a rod, and after an hour or so, a fisherman walked into the camp with two rods in hand. I’m smiling again, and with that the driver phones this phantom guide who wishes to talk to me. Guide apologises profusely for his tardiness in arriving however he will be arriving in the early hours of tomorrow morning now. I never answered to that, I don’t believe him, whoever he is, why should I? He then progresses to tell me that HE has found the rods for me and I have to pay the fisherman USD20 for the rod hire. I was horrified, everything was just getting worse. I told him in no uncertain terms that I was not paying for rod hire and so it was not mentioned again.

So now we have rods but then I am told… wait for it… There is NO LAKE FISHING! We are going to the river. Far out, this can’t get any worse now, I am devastated but I have to go with it, I have no choice. We drove 35km to a beautiful river and first up it was the fisherman’s job to get on the vodka and the driver’s job to catch the bait. This was relatively easy, driver would throw his T-Shirt over the buzzing insects hovering

around the grass (they were a cross between a cricket and a cicada) and once he’d nabbed them he stored them in a plastic bottle. For the life of me, I couldn’t catch a fish to save myself, cast after cast, hour after hour, and snag after snag. The fisherman passed me his rod a couple of times when he hooked up so at least I could reel something in. What species they were I have no idea. Not being a river fisher, they could have been trout, salmon, omul or

timbuktu for all I know. These guys only knew the species in their own language.

After fishing, we drove back to the lake and driver took me to dinner. He didn’t order, just sat there watching me eat, (must have been having dinner with the fisherman) so humiliating once again. Back to the ger camp and before leaving me there, he tells me he’ll be staying in the ger right next to me tonight. I asked him what time we would be going to the reindeer people in the morning and his response was “I don’t know, you are under your guide now. He is arriving in the morning”. And with that he drove off.

Sometime later, as I was sitting pondering outside my ger, a strange man approached me saying “you have organised horse riding for tomorrow?” My reply was “No, not me”.

Page 13: Newsletter November 2016 - Mount Maunganui Sports …down to the club and passing on a few pointers on how to do and identification tips for our members. An awesome presentation was

He insisted that indeed horse riding had been organised for me, but when I explained that tomorrow I would be with the reindeer people, he dropped the bombshell. The reindeer people (being nomadic) had already left the area, moved on to their winter abode. It was apparent now that the driver and guide had been stringing me along all this time, and thus the horse riding was arranged to fill in my day instead. My dream was totally shattered!

I went to bed. The ger was cold, I was alone and my life had come tumbling down. I couldn’t sleep, I have lost all trust in these people. It was a very long night.

I rose early in the morning, and first thoughts were to check the ger next to me to see if the driver had returned during the night, but lo and behold it was empty. My thoughts were now running wild... I have no driver and no guide, I have been deserted 700 kms from the city, and there is very little traffic for me to find my way back from this town that was closing down as the tourist season was ending. Quick as lightning, I got dressed, immediately packed my bag, and was on a mission to find a way out of here, fast!

I woke the receptionist in the ger next to me. And as I explained my predicament to her I couldn’t hold back the tears. Ulaanbaatar (the Capital City) is referred to as ‘UB’ so I just kept saying to this lady “UB, UB”. She didn’t speak English but she understood. Next thing she was on the phone, who to, I have no idea. I then sat at the doorstep outside my ger, bag in hand to check for my money which I would need to get out of here. When I couldn’t find it that was the last straw. The tears were now streaming down my face, not at the loss of the money but more that these people could do this to me.

Quite some time later, as I sat head bowed outside my ger, I heard a man’s voice saying “Toni Peck, I want you to calm down”. Thinking ‘who the hell are you’ I looked up and asked who he was. He said “I am your guide.” Well, my thoughts were of disbelief, first of all ‘how could you even dare to show your face here’ and second ‘why did you even bother coming, this nightmare of a tour is almost over’.

He was a gentle person (as I found most Mongolian people are), and he told me it was all his fault while profusely apologising. He said to me “If you want to hit me, I will understand”, and he meant it. My reply was “I don’t hit people”. I progressed to tell him that on top of everything else my money was gone and he sympathised with me. After a long sorry conversation he said he would do all he could to find the reindeer people for me, and if he couldn’t he would refund me the whole cost of my tour. Eventually he came and said “I have found the reindeer people, they are 300km away and we can make it on horseback in four days”. He was dead serious, but hang on, first of all I don’t trust you, and second I don’t have four days to spare as I have ongoing tours to meet.

So now he wants to do everything in his power to make it all up to me. He wants to take me fishing again at the river, on an exploratory boat tour, to see deer that are similar to reindeer, but I’m not interested in any of it. I just want out of there. “I hate this place”, I said to him with a vengeance. “I hate it!”

It was now early afternoon when lo and behold the driver turned up at the camp with the fisherman, just out of the blue. So when I insisted the guide take me the 700 kms back to the city right now, all three of us hopped in the car and left. We drove right through the night, at one stage encountering a police check point which held us up for an hour.

Page 14: Newsletter November 2016 - Mount Maunganui Sports …down to the club and passing on a few pointers on how to do and identification tips for our members. An awesome presentation was

Police searched the car and found nothing, they checked the driver’s credentials nothing was amiss. So with that they demanded the equivalent of USD20 cash, or otherwise they would issue driver a speeding ticket for the equivalent of USD60. Driver chose the ticket. Finally at 3.40am I was dropped at my luxury hotel, very tired but very relieved that it was all over. I felt safe now.

Today the guide wanted to spoil me, so we agreed to have minimal sleep and meet at 11am to go touring. He treated me like a queen. We spent time at beautiful Terelj

National Park, visited a Tibetan monastery, had an encounter with big birds (holding a big owl and a 20 kg vulture), Pizza Hut dinner (way better than NZ’s and a welcome change to Mongolian food) followed by a Mongolian instrumental, throat singing and contortionist concert at night.

Back to my hotel for the night and as I packed for my onward journey the next day, I found that the money I thought had been stolen was in fact in my bag. My heart sunk. It wasn’t elation, it was rather a feeling of guilt for putting this onto my guide who had sympathised with me. How was I going to tell him? Well I did that very next morning as he picked me up to take me to the ‘Intellectual Museum’ (the only one in the world).

And then we parted with bitter sweet memories as I was met by my next tour guide for a 3 day stay at a Ger camp 35 kms from UB on the steppe, before my onward Trans-Siberian journey through Russia where there were to be many great tales to tell.
