FROM THE PRINCIPAL Kia ora koutou A very warm welcome Mrs Melissa Nelson, who has joined us from Katikati College, as our new Deputy Principal. We welcomed her to MMI on Wednesday. We are very excited to have her join the MMI team. National Standards Data: On 1st March, all National Standards data is reported to the Ministry of Education. Approximately one third of our school will enter MMI achieving below and well below National Standards annually. Obviously, this is a big challenge for our teachers and our learners. That is why we set the school wide target that all of our students will make at least one year's progress in Reading, Writing and Maths. Our teachers and students work exceptionally hard to make these shifts in our learning. Over the next three weeks, we will share snippets of our learning data with you. This will show you where our students are achieving and just how much progress we are making to accelerate and shift learning and achievement. Proportion of Students achieving at/above the National Standards in Reading, Writing and Maths 2011-2016
Year Reading Writing Maths
2011 70 30 30
2012 72 56 54
2013 68.1 55 51
2014 79.3 63.5 63.5
2015 80.2 69 65
2016 80.9 63.3 61.5
National 80.35 64.8 68.6
Key Findings: As you can see our National Standards Data has steadily increased over the past six years. This is due to the significant amount of work we have done to improve teaching practice school wide. The 2016 National Standards shows small positive gains in reading and a small decrease in the proportion achieving at/above National Standards in Maths and Writing. However, during 2016 the roll increased overall by 31 students and we had a transience rate of around 14%. We also need to remember we change over around 300 students per year, as year 8's leave and year 7's arrive, so each year is essentially a new group of kids. Next week we will look at our positive shifts in Reading. Extra-Curricular: A busy sporting week: Good luck to all of our competitors who are taking part in multiple sporting events today. We have a number of students competing in New Zealand Under 14 Lifesaving Champs (Oceans 17), representing our three Surf Life Saving Clubs, the Western Bay of Plenty Poverty Bay Surfing Champs and our cricket team is also competing to take part in the MILO Cup. Well done to Year 7 Netball trialists who completed their first trial on Wednesday. Wheels Club: This week we have had two incidents of vandalism. A very small number of our boys have made some poor decisions and have been found to be interfering with bikes in our bike bays. All parents have been contacted and appropriate consequences have been put in place. Please contact us if you have any further concerns. We will also be working with the boys re safe cycling home. It has been reported to us that some of these young men have been doing wheelies into oncoming traffic. We are working to identify who these boys are. Have a great week. Ma te wa

SCHOOL REMINDERS
LATE STUDENTS All students must come to the student lobby to receive a late pass from us, if they arrive after the bell. This pass advises us and their classroom teacher that they have arrived at school. We cannot issue a late pass to the parent/caregiver as we must personally site the child, for security reasons. Any students who arrive late 3 or more times, in a 6 week block, will receive letters home to their parents/caregivers, as lateness is classified, by the Ministry of Education, as an unjustified absence. If your child attends morning trainings, please advise their coaches accordingly, of their expected time to arrive at school. Training is not an excuse! Please ensure your child is at school on time.
TRAFFIC CHAOS
THESE ARE NOT DROP OFF ZONES
Lodge Avenue Staff Carpark
Lodge Avenue Turn Around
The Bus Bay on Links Avenue Please DO NOT use these areas to drop off/pick up your child. This is for the safety of your children and others. We will be monitoring these areas before and after school and will request you move on if we find you in these zones.
RINGING IN FOR YOUR CHILD
We appreciate your child may be absent from time to time. We thank you for calling us to advise they will not be in, but we need you to do this every day they are away or stipulate a return date. Please do not assume we KNOW that they are absent in the days following, even if we have sent them home sick the day prior. We need to ensure we have all our students accounted for and also this will reduce the texts we send out, if we have the correct information.
Our text absentee number is: 027 232 0446
Many thanks.
RAINY DAY AFTER SCHOOL
ARRANGEMENTS
With winter fast approaching, it would be helpful if you could discuss with your child what after school pick up arrangements you will do, in the event of bad weather. Please bear in mind, that calling us during the day to send a message to your child, so they stay dry after school, results in our runner having to venture out in the same bad weather.
Much appreciated.
