Remembrance Day - Monday 11 November 2013 Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. This year is not only the 95th anniversary of the armistice on 11 November which ended the First World War, but also the 20th anniversary of the reinterment of the Unknown Australian Soldier in the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Memory. To mark the significant occasion, this year’s Remembrance Day Commemorative Address will be delivered by former Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Paul Keating, who delivered the poignant eulogy of the Unknown Australian Soldier in 1993. At the end of the day at the Last Post ceremony, Ben Roberts-Smith VC will read that same eulogy to commemorate the unknown soldier and the 102,000 names listed on the Roll of Honour. Experience Remembrance Day this year at the Memorial and remember all those who have served and sacrificed for Australia.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

Remembrance Day Service at the Ringwood Memorial Clocktower. The service will begin at 11.00am. The Ringwood RSL is inviting all to attend this service.

Relay is not a race, instead participants take turns to walk or run around the track. Whether you stay for the whole event and camp at our tent site overnight or just visit and walk a few laps, your commitment and support will make a meaningful contribution to the cancer fight.

Dear Parents and Friends of Kalinda Primary School

On Friday 8th November, Kalinda Primary will be holding our own Relay 4 Life to celebrate

our family and friends who have fought, are fighting, and have been touched by cancer.

The Junior School Council will be running a smaller version of the Maroondah Relay 4 Life

for all students in Kalinda to participate.

The afternoon, starting at 2:00pm, will consist of an Opening Ceremony, a relay around the

oval with groups of 4-5 students from each class walking a lap at a time. During this time,

the JSC will be running a number of small stalls.

These will be:

Relay 4 Life Candle bags – $2, all proceeds go to Team Kalinda. These will be lit (tea

candle inside) to shine a message for participants to see during the Maroondah

Relay Event.

Relay 4 Life merchandise such as wristbands, ribbons and other merchandise.

The opportunity to help decorate the Kalinda banner, used to represent our team at

the Maroondah Relay event.

A sign up stall where students, parents and friends can sign up to be a part of the

Maroondah Relay 4 Life Kalinda Team. Entry is $20pp.

Everyone is still welcome to attend the Maroondah Relay with/without signing up.

The afternoon will come to an end with a closing ceremony at 3:15pm.

Japanese Day

Mrs Shaw and Level 2 children made lovely かえるkaeru for our Japanese garden!!

On Friday, 6th December, it is Kalinda’s Japanese day.

It is a whole school event. The school has been divided into Aka (Red) and Shiro (white) teams. This year, the

whole class will be put in one team colour.

This year, the theme is “かえる” “kaeru”, which means Frog! And more, it also means going back. Say, ieni kaeru

means going back home, motoni kaeru means going back to the original, wareni kaeru means being ones’ self. It also means changing, hatching and exchanging. There are 108 kaeru (frogs) at this year’s newly opened Japanese

garden. Some かえるkaeru might be hoping our exchange between Kalinda and schools in Japan continue on and

branch out. Some かえるkaeru might be hoping the area affected by disaster can return to what it used to be.

Let’s celebrate the Japanese garden at Kalinda and wear something like かえるkaeru!! Origami frogs? Frog

t-shirts??? Or otherwise please wear your team colour clothes such as a red shirt, red belt, red head band, white karate cloth, white socks, or a white ribbon. The best dressed student award will be announced at assembly!

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE As the warm Spring sun brightens up our vegetable garden we are excited to announce that our special space is now open at recess and lunch times. Many students are enjoying the new bench seats, relaxing, reading and playing games. The hand painted stepping stones next to the hot house are also being put to use with many imaginative hopping and jumping games. As we all know, November is poppy month, the time of the year when, by the wearing of a simple emblem, a red poppy, we salute the memory of those who sacrificed their health, their strength, even their lives that we might live in a free country. The Flanders Poppy grew profusely in the Spring of 1915 on the battlefields of Belgium, France and Gallipoli and has now become synonymous with great loss of life in war. This red field poppy has come to be known as an internationally recognized symbol of Remembrance and Kalinda Primary School is proud to have some beautiful Flanders poppies flowering in our vegetable garden this year. INTERSCHOOL SPORT DIVISION CRICKET SEMI-FINAL: Congratulations to Kalinda's cricketers! On a glorious Spring

morning, our team bowled first and – self-admittedly – didn’t do a great job with the ball, allowing Rigwood Heights to post a

competitive total of 77 runs. In a match that both teams played in great spirit, Kalinda’s batters were up to the challenge

however, and stormed to 113 runs before the game was ‘called’, shortly before the scheduled finishing time. This team will now

play Bayswater North Primary School in the Division Grand-final to be played at Kalinda P.S. on Friday, November 22 at

9:30am.

INTERSCHOOL SPORT DIVISION VOLLEYBALL GRAND FINAL: Kalinda Primary School’s Volleystars team (from Summer

interschool sport) will play their Division Grand-final against Wonga Park Primary School tomorrow. The match is to be played in

Kalinda’s stadium commencing at 9:30am. It is anticipated that the match will last for around 60 minutes. The students have

been working diligently towards 'tweaking' their skills from Volleystars (which is a modified version of the adult game, which

allows participants to catch the ball before volleying it) to traditional Volleyball - which they are expected to play tomorrow. If you

have any spare time tomorrow morning, feel free to pop into Kalinda to support Mr. Anthony and his team as they seek the

opportunity to proceed to Regional level. Good luck boys and girls!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO TRIAL FOR 2014 TEAM VIC STATE TEAMS: As 2013

draws to a close for School Sport Australia National Championships, it is timely to remind schools

and that opportunities for emerging talented sporting students to participate in Team Vic State

Teams will again occur in 2014. Click here to view the draft 2014 SSA calendar on the SSV

website. There is already a small amount of information available regarding 2014 teams. We

(SSV) endeavour to have all information on all 2014 national events available on the Team Vic page on the School Sport Victoria

website at the beginning of Term 1, 2014.

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Week 6, Term 4 (11th November – 15th November)

Program Update

Hi, and welcome to the mid-point of the final term. Only a few weeks to go before we say goodbye to our Grade 6 kids. I would like to thank Becka Hume-Cook who has been stepping up as Co-ordinator while I have been off helping out another program. She will be remaining as Acting Co-ordinator until November 12th. This past week the children got involved in some water activities to help beat the heat. Next week we celebrate National Recycling Week and observe the International day for Tolerance. And remember, new families can enrol for free at www.oshclub.com.au anytime you choose. This is a great way to ensure that your children get the care they need, when you need it most. Thanks

Financial Assistance - Information for Parents

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA):

The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is provided by the Victorian Government to lower-income families to help with

education-related costs.

If you have a child under 16, and you hold a valid Health Care Card, Pension Card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be

eligible to receive the EMA. The allowance is paid in two instalments, one in March and one in August.

The payment is intended to assist with education-related costs such as; uniforms, excursions, textbooks, and stationery. You

can elect to have your EMA paid in one of the following ways:

Paid by direct deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) into your own nominated bank account; or

Paid to the school to be held as credit which you can use towards education expenses; or

Paid by cheque which will be posted to the school for collection.

In 2014, the annual EMA amount per student is:

$200 for prep students

$150 for students in years 1 – 6.

$300 for year 7 students

$250 for students in year 8 – until age 16*.

* A pro-rata amount is payable for students turning 16 in 2014.

How to Apply: Contact the school office to obtain an EMA application form.

Closing Date: You need to obtain an EMA application form from the school office and return by 28 February 2014.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

With these ingredients in your pantry, you will never be

caught short of salad dressing again!

Easy Salad Dressing

What you need: 1 heaped teaspoon of Dijon Mustard (or use Hot English for some kick!) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Salt and pepper to season

Place all the ingredients in a clean jar with screw top lid.

Shake until combined. Pour over salad just before serving. WENDY McLAUGHLAN KALINDA CHEF

QUICK CHICKEN NOODLE SALAD

Serves 4

300g dried egg noodles

2 cups shredded cooked chicken, cooled

2 spring onions, shredded

1/2 cucumber, cut into matchsticks

1 carrot, cut into matchsticks

1 long red chilli, seeds removed, finely chopped

1 cup each mint and coriander leaves

2 kaffir lime leaves (see note), finely shredded

Juice of 1 lime

1 tbs each brown sugar, fish sauce and soy sauce

Cook the noodles according to the packet instructions, then drain and refresh.

Place the noodles, chicken, spring onion, cucumber, carrot, chilli, herbs and kaffir lime leaves in a bowl. Toss to combine. Place the lime juice, sugar, fish sauce and soy sauce in a separate bowl, and stir to combine.

To serve, pour dressing over the salad and toss to combine.

Children With Type 1 Diabetes - Are You Challenged by Your Child’s Diabetes?

Research into parenting children with type 1 diabetes.

The University of Queensland is conducting research into parenting children with type 1 diabetes. Parenting a child with

diabetes presents many challenges (everything from the regular blood glucose monitoring and insulin intake, to more

general parenting tasks). The aim of this study is to understand the factors that make the management of childhood

diabetes particularly difficult, and to use this information to develop strategies that might assist parents in managing their

child’s diabetes.

If you are a parent of a 2 to 10-year-old child with type 1 diabetes, we would love to hear from you!

By sharing your experiences (confidentially), you will be making a valuable contribution to the development of much-

needed childhood diabetes management strategies for parents.

The Kids Fun Run With Thomas will once again be held at Gembrook Puffing Billy Station on Sunday, 24

th November. There will be fun and games for all the family. The Kids Fun Run with

Thomas is a Rotary Club of Emerald & District fundraising event with the theme ‘Kids Helping Kids’. What better way to raise funds to improve the health of children, than through the exuberance and enjoyment of healthy children. Thomas the Tank Engine has such a special place in the hearts of children, young (and old), that the day is filled with bright-eyed excitement as the children run alongside the train. The funds raised by the Kids Fun Run with Thomas 2013 will be used to complete the new Children’s Ward at the Angliss Hospital in Ferntree Gully.
