Paper Presented in a Foreign Conference

Mr. Muhammad Aleem has presented his paper titled “A Strategic Roadmap to Meet the Future Energy Projections for the Sustainable Development of Pakistan” at IASTED International Conference on Power and Energy Systems (AsiaPES 2010) held from November 24-26, 2010 in Phuket Thailand. The venue of conference was small and beautiful island of Phuket in Thailand. The focus of paper was to figure out the expected energy projections of Pakistan till FY2025 and design a strategic roadmap to meet those projections. The delegations around the globe attended this conference and showed their interest in the energy sector of Pakistan after the presentation of paper. He shared his memories in these words “It was great experience for me being the part of international academic scholars and representative of COMSATS Institute of Information Technology and Pakistan. I really enjoyed the worth seeing islands, white sands beaches and resorts of Thailand.”

Workshop on Entrepreneurship In recent years, importance of small business for an economy and society has increasingly been recognized. Small business provides bulk of opportunities for employment. “Entrepreneurship” workshop is a programmed effort by Comsats Institute of Information Technology Lahore to build a strong relationship bridge between the Institute and the community. It aimed to build up the self confidence and self determination in the students. The primary goal of this Workshop was to

provide practical knowledge to the students, essential for planning, organizing and operating their own business in their future lives. Those who will enter in the managerial positions in existing firms will also benefit from their experience and training in discharging their responsibilities. Since most of the participants will be operating in the legal and social economic structure of the Pakistan society, a special emphasis was given to relate theoretical insight of the course to the nature and environments of small business in this country. This workshop aimed to build an Innovation and creativity with in the students. The students can use their knowledge to address the real life social, economic, health, educational and environmental problems and can also have the opportunity to make a positive difference to the world. After attending the workshop students are equipped to design their own projects. Special Emphasis of this Workshop:

Develop a personal mission statement and personal action plan Identify entrepreneurship as a career and lifestyle option. Identify and assess the overall and target markets. Identify and assess the financing options for a new venture. Understand exist strategies. Evaluate the necessary qualities and characteristics of the successful entrepreneurial

profile. Recognize and determine the steps necessary to open and operate a small business

enterprise. The workshop was organized by Mr. Shahzad Ghafoor who is Lecturer at MS Department.

BBA Welcome Party

BBA Batch 13 arranged a party for BBA Batch 14 to welcome them at CIIT Lahore. It was a pleasant day. Everyone was dressed up really well for the occasion. Dr Ahmed A Bodla Director CIIT Lahore, Dr Talat Afza Dean Management Sciences, Dr Abdul Haque HOD Management Sciences Department and faculty also joined us at the party. They were welcomed warmly by the hosts. The party started at about 4:30 PM with the name of Allah

followed by Naat. Mr. Bilal from BBA Batch 13 gave the welcome speech and then the Director addressed the gathering. After that the real fun began by the dance of Mr. Abdul Mateen followed by two drama acts one from section A and the other from section B. Funny titles were also given to the juniors to build closeness. At the end there was a song sung by Mr. Muhammad Umar Amjad. And then the dinner was served.

Marketing Debate Competition A marketing debate competition was held between the students of BBA and MBA at Seminar Room on Nov 11, 2010. The topic of the competition was “MARKETING IS AN EXPENSE OR AN INVESTMENT”. The purpose of the competition was to enhance the knowledge of students about marketing and

create an understanding of how it is useful and productive for the success of any organization. The entire participants actively participated in the competition. At the end, the result was announced by the worthy judges- who were senior faculty members in the field of Marketing at CIIT, Lahore and certificates were distributed to the winner and runner up of the Debate competition. This successful event was organized by Ms Tahira Umair, teacher of Marketing.

International Education Week United States Education Foundation in Pakistan arranged an International Education Week held at FC College Lahore on 10th November 2010 for which they invited 4 outstanding students and 2 faculty members from MS Department. The program was a mixer with Fulbright Alumni, refreshments, raffle draw and a movie.

Ms Faiza Hassan and Ms. Fukaiha KakaKhail volunteered to be a part of that event. Ali Ijaz, Mohammad Bilal Farooq, Hafiza Sadia Farooq were the students chosen to attend the event. All these 3 students are from BBA. A couple of them are from the graduating batch. We arrived at the venue around 2:00pm. Till 3:00 students were briefed on how they could avail a scholarship abroad and what are the requirements that they need to fulfill to surely get the scholarship followed by meeting with Fulbright alumni. After that the question and answer

session started in which a lot of ambiguities were cleared by the host and the Fulbright Alumni. Then there was the raffle draw which most of us won. Tea was served at around 4:00p.m along with the distribution of Fulbright logo T-Shirts. In the end everyone saw a movie. Both students and faculty members gained a lot and were very motivated to seeking a scholarship.

Sports at MS Department

With firm focus on studies teachers at MS Department also encourage their students to take part in extra curricular activities. Not only students but our faculty members also arrange matches once in a while with other departments. Following are some activities that came as a result of the above objective,

MS faculty played a friendly Cricket match with the faculty of Chemical Engineering. Faculty of MS won the match by 18 runs.

BBA won the Inter-department Football Competition defeating BCE in finals by 8-0. BBA qualified for the final of Hockey Tournament as well and stayed Runner up. MBA won the Inter-department Cricket Tournament by defeating BBA in finals. For the first

time. Both teams of MS department qualified for the final of any Inter-department competition. All of the above mentioned events were organized by Mr. Khurrum Shahzad

Guest Lecture by Ms. Mussarat Jabin (CEO MKR International)

Ms Binish Nauman arranged a training session for her class of “Seminar in Public and Business Policies”. The main objective of this session was to groom students and make them ready for future challenges in the market. It is their last semester and after one month they will be in market seeking jobs. In this session they were groomed that how they could become job provider not job seekers. The guest speaker for this session was ‘Ms Mussarat Jabin” who is CEO MKR International (www.mkrint.com). She is by profession an educationist. After retirement as Professor of

Psychology from University of Education, she started her career as women entrepreneur. Within short span of 3 years she has represented Pakistan at International level through different forums. She held her exhibitions in South America, Bangladesh, Mauritius, etc. Her recent achievement is getting first prize among 140 participants at an International Exhibition held in Bangladesh in August 2010. During her interaction with students at COMSATS Institute of

Information Technology, Lahore campus she motivated them regarding their future. The questions that came under discussion are as follows,

How to start a business with minimum cost? What are different ways of going International? Which things are more in demand in which country? How can the students utilize their education and skills in an effective manner?

Having background of psychology, she also guided them about different mind power exercises for making them mentally strong. It was definitely a great experience for students to learn from a lady who in tough economic conditions of Pakistan started her business career at such a later stage of her life and proved herself to be a successful women entrepreneur.

Publications Mr Mohammad Aleem published his paper being co-author, titled “A Spiral Process Model of Technological Innovation Capabilities in a Newly Industrialized Economy: The Case of Samsung” at The 8th GLOBELICS International Conference, University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, held in Nov 1~3, 2010. The paper has been presented by one of the fellow author of Mr. Muhammad Aleem.
