Fireworks Ordinance

On June 3, 2013, the Lyon Township Board of Trustees adopted a fireworks ordinance that stipulates when fireworks may be discharged. Consumer fireworks may be discharged only on the day before, the day of, and the day after, a National holiday. National holiday means New Year’s Day (January 1); Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (third Monday in January); Washington’s Birthday (third Monday in February); Memorial Day (last Monday in May); Independence Day (July 4); Labor Day (first Monday in September); Columbus Day (second Monday in October); Veterans Day (November 11); Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas Day (December 25). On days that consumer fireworks are allowed to be discharged, it may not be done between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. The one exception is New Year’s Day. On that day, consumer fireworks may not be discharged between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Also, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind residents that the following activities related to fireworks are illegal:

Selling consumer fireworks to a minor

Using consumer fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (.08 or more)

Using fireworks on public or private property without the express consent of the owner

Atchison Park Baseball Fields Get Renovation

The sounds of baseball will once again be heard in James F. Atchison Memorial Park as a project was completed this spring to renovate the two baseball fields at the east end of the park. The project was done in cooperation with the South Lyon Junior League (SLJL). The Township split

the $15,000 cost of the renovation with the SLJL in the first of what will hopefully be many annual improvement projects to the fields. The fields had not been used for the last two years due to drainage issues and fencing issues that left concrete exposed. The renovation fixed the fences, repurposed benches from other areas of the park to create safe dugout benches, fixed the grade to eliminate the drainage issues, and planted new grass seed on the south field. “The South Lyon Junior League has been a great partner on this project,” said Township Trustee and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PAB) Member Steve Fletcher. “By investing in the fields and providing maintenance during the season, the SLJL gets two additional fields for their league and the Township gets a much needed park improvement at a very low cost.” The SLJL plans to propose annual improvement projects to the PAB. If funding is available, the Township would again split the cost of these projects. The fields could eventually become a funding source for the park as well, since the Township holds all rights to run tournaments or rent the fields out to other area baseball programs on days the SLJL is not using them. “It really is a win-win and a great example of cooperation between the Township and an area sports organization,” stated Fletcher.

In observance of Independence Day, the Lyon Township Municipal Center will be closed on Thursday, July 4th and Friday, July 5th.

Sidewalks to be Installed, Replaced in New Hudson

In 2009, the Lyon Township Downtown Development Authority (DDA), together with residents, business and property owners, and community stakeholders, developed a plan to create a walkable downtown oriented on the five-points intersection of Grand River Avenue, Pontiac Trail, and Milford Road. One of the DDA’s most ambitious goals is the Grand River Streetscape Plan, a $30 million multi-year project that includes on-street parking, bike lanes, sidewalks, street trees, and decorative street lighting. The DDA decided to make the sidewalks a top priority. “Why wait to do the entire streetscape at one time when safety and necessity dictate a more phased approach?” asked Jay Howie, Chairman of the DDA. “We have an incomplete network of sidewalks throughout New Hudson. Sections of missing sidewalks present problems for pedestrians and bicyclists trying to connect to retail establishments and recreational amenities, such as Atchison Park and the Huron Valley Trail.” At their June 11, 2013 meeting, the DDA reviewed an engineering study of the existing sidewalks and bike paths within the DDA district. The main focus was along Grand River and Milford Road near the five-points intersection and also along Lyon Center Drive East and New Hudson Drive West. Approximately a mile of new and replacement sidewalk would be needed to complete the sidewalk network. The recommendation from the study was for the work to be completed in two phases. Phase one consists of:

200 lineal feet of new sidewalk along the east side of Milford Road, south of I-96 450 lineal feet of new sidewalk along the north side of Grand River Avenue, between the Huron Valley Trail and

New Hudson Plaza 170 lineal feet of new sidewalk and 90 lineal feet of replacement sidewalk along the east side of Milford Road,

south of Grand River 600 lineal feet of new sidewalk on the north side of Grand River Avenue, west of Milford Road 350 lineal feet of new sidewalk on the north side of Grand River Avenue, from Lyon Center Drive East to Research
