This year, Orem Summerfest is honoring the boards of the SCERA and Hale Center Theater Orem is the 2011 Grand Marshals. The theme for 2011’s celebration is “All the World’s a Stage” and the committee felt they fit perfectly.
SCERA was created in 1933, envisioned as a place for neighbors and families to come together, create friendships and have fun. That small idea has grown into a nonprofit organization dedicated to the arts, family and to youth, and is now one of Utah Valley’s arts leaders.
More than 400 teens, adults and seniors serve annually at SCERA facilities by sharing talents, learning skills an developing a lifelong love of community service. More than 500 volunteer cast members perform in their stage productions, giving more than 172,000 hours of service each year.
The historic SCERA Center for the Arts opened in 1941, and houses theaters, exhibit space and educational programs. The SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre is a one-of-a-kind outdoor venue for summer evening entertainment now
in its 27th year. Hale Center Theater Orem
was founded in 1990 by Ruth and Nathan Hale. In those 21 years, the theater has welcomed more than 1 million theatergoers. Each year sees more than 90,000 patrons attending one of 350 performances of one of seven productions.
The theater format is theater-in-the-round, with 280-300 available seats depending on the show, and the stage itself is only about 250 square feet. But thanks to the intimate nature of the space, audiences are brought right into the emotion of
the performance. With state-of-the-art lighting and sound, plus a dedication to excellence in costuming and props, HCTO consistently attracts the best directors and acting talent in the state.
HCTO has received several recognitions from the Daily Herald’s annual Best of Utah Valley, praises from the Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune and Playbill.com, an internationally recognized premier theater news outlet, which listed “110 in the Shade” as one of the “Top Six Theater Events in the Nation” in 2010.
Honoring the stages of Orem as Grand MarshalsOrem Summerfest also recognizes junior high students who stand out from the crowd. They are:
