Dear Parents,

YEAR 6 STUDY TOUR OF CANBERRA

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

Our Year 6 students are leaving on their Canberra Study Tour on Sunday 12 May. They will return on Thursday

16 May. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus

on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national

capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion

the Australian Government is contributing funding of $240 per student under the Parliament and Civics

Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the

excursion. This rebate has already been deducted from the total cost that parents are asked to pay. We are

sure the students will make the most of this very exciting opportunity. They will experience some amazing

places and learn so much about our national capital. We look forward to hearing all about it on their return.

READY READERS

Thank you to all our parents and volunteers who have supported the school in past years with our Ready

Readers program. Unfortunately, this year to date we have only managed to recruit 3 parent volunteers for this

highly valued and needed Ready Readers.

Due to the lower number of volunteers, we will only be able to provide this additional reading support to

students in Years 1 & 2 at present. If you have haven’t yet heard of the volunteer program and you can afford

an hour a couple of times each week please email Alyssa at Alyssa.Marsh@education.wa.edu.au or phone

Cherie Raymond, Assistant Principal on 9583 8800 and Cherie will help you make the connection with Alyssa.

Alyssa provides training, talks you through the use of the Ready Reader books and question cards, stays in

close contact, and meets with you at regular intervals throughout the year. The training is really valuable and

the joy you will experience as a volunteer seeing young people advance with their reading is exceptionally

rewarding.

Incursion Update

Start Smart

On Tuesday our Year 1—6 students participated in the Commonwealth Bank Start Smart program which changes the way young people learn about money. By making money management interactive, engaging and fun the program equips students with the confidence and competence to make smart decisions about money.

Scope IT

Scope IT is back this term for our Pre-primary students. They are learning about computers, how to use a mouse and have begun coding. The excitement and focused learning impressed our facilitator Scoper Jen.

Woolworths are helping kids across Australia get exciting new equipment for their schools and Early

Learning Centres. After delivering over 300,000 pieces of equipment for science, technology, maths,

arts and more last time, Earn & Learn is back.

Our Golden Bay box is outside Woolworths at Secret Harbour shopping centre. We also have a

collection box in our School Library.

Parenting Workshop Overview

Circle of Security - For parents of children 0-18years Circle of Security is an early intervention workshop for parents and carers, which focuses on the child/parent relationship and how to create a secure attachment. Our trained Facilitators work with parents and care givers to help them: • Understand their child’s emotional world by learning to read their emotional needs • Support their child’s ability to successfully manage emotions • Enhance the development of their child's self esteem

1-2-3 Magic & Emotion Coaching - For parents of children 2-12 years

1-2-3 Magic & Emotion Coaching is a parenting workshop which gives parents and caregivers a

simple and effective approach to discipline 2 - 12 year olds. It provides parents with the

knowledge and practical skills to set limits confidently and calmly when required and the ability

to follow through with reasonable consequences.

Protective Behaviours - For parents of children 0-18 years

The Protective Behaviours program is a proactive approach to provide children, teens and

vulnerable people with the skills and strategies to recognise when they are feeling unsafe and

where to go to for help. Delivered in a safe format, this program is designed to leave parents

feeling positive about equipping their children with positive life skills, such as assertiveness,

emotional literacy and problem solving. These skills assist children to better cope with anxiety

and know when to take risks, where to go for help and how to speak up against peer pressure,

bullying and abuse.

Sensory Processing Difficulties (SPD) - For Parents of children 0 -17 years

Children experiencing SPD have difficulties with organising and responding to sensory input,

which can lead to learning difficulties, developmental delay, anxiety and stress. This session is

designed to inform parents of what SPD looks like, how it can affect children, basic strategies and

coping mechanisms for parents and correct referral pathways for support and therapy.
