Newsletter July 2010 ___________________________________________________________________________________________ SAFC Society Election 2010 The original Board of the Society then known as ‘Seadog Trust’ was elected at the McCain Stadium in April 2007, following an uncontested first election of Board members made up from the steering committee who began the Society in order to gain representation on the Board of Scarborough FC. Board members at that time were Simon Cope, Ben Courtney, Sandra Troughton, Andy Troughton, Chris Rooke, Stuart Keith and Richard Adamson. Six months later, that Board found themselves running a football club, with a need for fresh blood. A second election was held in November 2007, this time 11 people standing for 10 positions. Following the results, six of the above seven original Board members (Stuart Keith decided not to run for election) were joined by James Hunter, John Clarke, Tony Brown and Wendy Danby, who was originally co-opted from the SFC Supporters’ Club in June 2007. In accordance with the Society rules a third of the club’s Board must step down each year, and re-apply for election should they wish to do so, alongside any other Society members who wish to stand for election. At the first Board meeting following the second Society election in November 2007, lots were drawn to decide who would step down after one, two and three years service. The result of the lots was as follows: 1 year: Chris Rooke, Simon Cope, Andy Troughton 2 years: James Hunter, Richard Adamson, Ben Courtney 3 years: Sandra Troughton, Wendy Danby, John Clarke, Tony Brown At the annual election in October 2008 Chris Rooke, Simon Cope and Andy Troughton had served their original term of office positions. Rooke decided not to stand once again. Cope and Troughton were elected once again, alongside Kevin Smith. Last year James Hunter and Richard Adamson stood for re-election, although Ben Courtney had previously resigned. Dave Holland and Mike Price stood for the remaining position, with Holland being elected. This year four current directors will resign their posts – Sandra Troughton, Wendy Danby, John Clarke and Tony Brown. They may chose to stand again, and the Society invites current paid-up members to do the same. All those wishing to stand for election are asked to complete the form attached to this newsletter. Please read the details on the next two pages first, which explains the make-up of the Board and what the Board does, and how to stand for election.

WHAT DOES THE BOARD DO? The Scarborough Athletic FC Society Board is currently made up of eight directors – following the departure of Kevin Smith and Simon Cope in early 2010, plus co-opted Finance Director Geoff Osguthorpe, who was co-opted in March 2010. The Board meets each month to receive reports about finance and membership levels and to discuss current club issues and the further development of the club. Away from meetings directors are dedicated to the practical issues of running a football club including match day issues, budgeting and financial control, player and manager issues, as well as forward planning in community issues and fundraising. WHY ARE SOCIETY ELECTIONS IMPORTANT? The Society needs a full strength Board, which means 10 elected directors, plus two co-opted, who will be responsible for taking Scarborough Athletic FC and the Society forward from the solid foundations that have already been laid during the past three years. For a contested election this year there must be at least six people nominated to stand for election to the Board, including those stepping down and re-standing, by the closing date for nominations. If there are five or less nominations those people who have been nominated will be elected unopposed. The Board needs people with a range of skills and backgrounds who support the aims of the club and are prepared to work hard in the achievement of those aims. No previous experience is necessary. The work is unpaid and demanding but rewarding, as it aims to ensure the survival and long-term well being of the football club that we all support. The Elections, and the way the club is set up as a Trust, is a real opportunity for genuine supporters to have a positive input into the running of Scarborough Athletic FC. The credibility of the club is enhanced if new Board members are democratically elected with a large majority of the members exercising their right to vote. If you have the time and enthusiasm and think you have something to offer please give serious consideration to standing for election. WHO CAN STAND FOR ELECTION? Any paid-up member of the Trust can stand for election as long as: ● you are over 18 years old ● you have not been declared bankrupt ● you are not subject to a disqualification order under the Company Directors Disqualification Act ● you have not been convicted of an indictable offence ● you are willing to abide by any rules for the conduct of the election. For more information on how to stand for election continue reading the next page.
