SPORTS DAY 2017Tuesday 14th of March saw the running of the Henley High School Sports Day for 2017. The weather was perfect for the event and it was great to see staff and students wearing their colours to represent their House. It was a day that was well suited to great results, and we had some excellent performances including many long-standing records broken:

MENINGOCOCCAL B VACCINE HERD IMMUNITY STUDYParticipation of Year 10, 11 and 12 students in The B Part of It Study

The licensed meningococcal B vaccine (Bexsero®) is being offered to all year 10, 11 and 12 students in 2017 at our school by the City of Charles Sturt as part of The South Australian B Part of it Meningococcal B Vaccine Herd Immunity Study.

During 2017 - 2018 each participant will:

• Receive 2 doses of Meningococcal B (Bexsero®) vaccine

• Complete 2 single page questionnaires (1 if student is in year 12)

• Have 2 throat swabs taken (1 if student is in year 12)

• Receive a $20 iTunes card after having each throat swab

HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 1 | WEEK 10

HARMONY DAYOn the 20th of March, members of Student Executive visited all year 8 and 9 classes and gave a presentation on Harmony Day. Our aim was to promote what the day is all about before it occurred on the 21st: inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone in Australia. Different members of Student Executive were responsible for delivering these presentations to allocated Sub Schools. We exhibited our school’s cultural diversity by having our own international students run language classes at lunchtime. The languages taught were German, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Other resources were shared with the PLP teachers to continue the conversation and promote respect, fairness, and a sense of belonging. Staff, students, and Henley High School are committed to maintaining our score as an inclusive, welcoming, and safe place for everyone.

PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITS – WEEKS 5, 6 AND 7In the two weeks leading up to Henley High’s Open Day, the Middle School team and several Year 9 students visited local primary schools to promote Henley High. The visits allowed Year 6 and 7 students to make informed decisions about which high school they might attend as a Year 8 student. The students spoke about Middle School structure, Middle School events and the Specialist Sports Program (SSP) which also informed the primary school students about the SSP application process and its closure date. The primary school students were able to ask any unanswered questions during the visits to gain a wider understanding of what Henley High has to offer. The Year 9 students were visiting the schools they had attended as Year 7s themselves and were excited to see the familiar environment, students and teachers, once again. The Primary Schools, and the Year 9s who visited them, are listed below. These Year 9s will be issued with Citizenship certificates for their role during the visits. We would like to thank the Primary Schools below for taking time out of their day to allow us to visit and talk about our school. The year 9 students were outstanding during the presentations and we really appreciated their help. Finally, I would like to thank the Middle School Counsellor and Sub School Managers for also assisting with the visits. We will return to the primary schools in Term 4 to discuss the Year 7 cohort before they visit for our two orientation days in Week 7 of Term 4.

TRANSITION INFORMATION EVENING 2017On Tuesday 7th March, the Henley High School Supported Learning Centre held their annual Transition Information Evening. The evening was an opportunity for parents and students to investigate post school options with representatives from 12 various government and private enterprises presenting information about finance, the NDIS, Day Options, Australian Disability Employment and Open Employment services. As well as families from Henley High School, staff from the Seaton High School Special Class were welcomed. The SLC has been organising the Transition Information Evening for 6 years, and with the positive feedback received from parents and students, and the large turn out, we look forward to continuing this important event each year. MAGIC MONDAY IN THE SLCMagic Monday is truly magic in the SLC. We have a tradition of doing a variety of activities like Music/Karaoke, Cooking Sessions and Art and Craft activities every Monday lesson 1. All of the SLC students are divided into three groups, which then rotate each Monday through nominated sessions. This means that our students have an additional opportunity to mix and interact in a social way with fellow students from other classes varying in age levels. Friendships are forged; a spirit of helping those in need is encouraged as well as a joy in creating and participating. Our teachers also look forward to Magic Monday as we get to try new activities as well as demonstrate our individual talents. Have a look at all the fun we have had!

SLC OPEN NIGHT – TYRANNOSAURUS ASSEMBLY CHALLENGEWe would like to take the opportunity to thank one of our students - Joshua Pryor for his drive and ambition in assembling our 3D Dinosaur model – without much help and instruction. During Open Night it was the centre of attention in the SLC with many visitors commenting on it, and deservedly so.

SLC3 SOCIETY AND CULTURE - LET’S CELEBRATE Everyone loves to celebrate. No more than the students of SLC who during Week 6 of Term 1, with the support of their MKR parents and grandparents, all provided a feast of cultural delights from afar as students completed their unit of work on ‘Cultural Diversity’ in class presenting PowerPoints, Posters and a Fiery Dragon Puppet.

We ate Ukrainian, Greek, Italian, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Australian. YUM…YUM…YUM!

INTRODUCTION TO THE YEAR 12 PREFECTSThe role of Prefect is an honorary one – it recognises outstanding and continuous leadership of students and support of the school during their time at Henley High School.

MEET CAITLINMy name is Caitlin O’Connor and I’m in Year 12 here at Henley High. I decided that I would like to be a prefect simply because I thought it would be the perfect way to try and give back what Henley has given me – that being the opportunity to become the young woman I am today. I also feel that being a prefect will give me the chance to further improve my communication skills and as a way to meet a variety of different people. I look forward to what being a prefect, and student at Henley, will have in store for me for the reminder of the year.

MEET CHELSEYI’m Chelsey Warnest and I’m currently in my final year of schooling here at Henley. So far I’m enjoying my role as prefect as it’s been awesome working with the other prefects who are such a great group of students. I really look forward to the rest of the year!

MEET HELENMy name is Helen Karakulak, I am in year 12 and have been chosen to be a prefect. I’m grateful for the opportunity as I am keen on developing my leadership skills and confidence as I believe I can positively contribute to our school community. I am particularly interested in increasing tolerance and multiculturalism in our local community, as I believe they are important values that should go hand in hand with academics. We’re very lucky that our school provides international programs and travel opportunities that promote cultural understanding and creativity. I think that being a prefect is a good opportunity for me to help contribute to conversation regarding this and support younger students that also seek these kinds of opportunities.

MEET ISAACMy name is Isaac Brill and I am one of the Year 12 prefects. This role has given me the opportunity to assist the school by participating in events based inside and outside of school. I am also available and willing to contribute to discussions and help solve any problems students may be facing during their time at Henley.

MEET LINDAI am Linda (Thi Van Khanh Tran). I am from Vietnam and I am in Year 12. I have been chosen to be a Student Prefect this year. I am very happy and excited to work with the group and help as this role. I believe that it will be a good opportunity for me to interact with more people and also my insight as an international student would be valuable too. My English is still limited but I will try to do my best and I look forward to assisting school through this year.

MEET KAIMy name is Kai Neagle and I was fortunate enough to be chosen as a Prefect this year. I have been involved with student leadership since Year 9 and hope to continue my work around the school in my new role this year. I’m also one of two Prefect representatives on the Student Executive, which allows me to continue my work with the group I have been involved with since 2015. I look forward to promoting and representing the school with the rest of the group in my role as a Prefect.

MEET KEONHi, My name is Keon Doecke and I am exceptionally excited to take on the role of Prefect for 2017. I look forward to being able to improve my leadership skills, to represent my peers and to help facilitate and implement ideas within the school and broader community. I have assumed various leadership position throughout my school life, currently including Sports Captain and Oliphant Male House Captain. Out of school I am an Aussie Hoops coach, teaching primary school students from ages 5-9 the fundamental basics of basketball.

MEET SARAHMy name is Sarah Elfenbein, I have represented the school in a variety of sports demonstrating my leadership and sense of teamwork that enables students to overcome challenges. This is my fifth and final year at Henley High School and I am pleased to be a School Prefect, Sports Captain and House Captain for 2017. As part of my leadership roles in 2017 I aim to enhance school spirit and participation throughout various school sporting and community events. I am privileged to be in this role and I hope that my contributions as a leader positively influence student life at Henley High School.

MEET STEFANIEHi, I’m Stefanie Taylor and I am excited to take on the role of prefect as I look forward to being a role model for not only the younger year levels, but my peers as well. I have assumed many leadership positions throughout my schooling career, currently including senior house captain and am very honoured to be representing the school. Outside of school, I am a gymnastics coach which allows me to interact with the wider community and demonstrate the ethos of Henley High School.

MEET WEIHello! My name is Wei Teh and I’m currently undertaking Year 12 at Henley High School. Having looked up to previous school prefects throughout my schooling years, it has been incredibly humbling to be granted the opportunity to become a part of the 2017 school prefects. What I hope to achieve the most this year is making a positive contribution to this school by assisting and representing my peers, as well as improving the school community through a greater involvement in school affairs and event organisation. Additionally, I believe that these new experiences will enable me to develop my confidence and gain leadership and interpersonal skills, which will be invaluable to my future. Thank you.”


HENLEY HIGH YEAR 5/6/7 TENNIS INVITATIONAL The SSP tennis program held the Henley High Tennis Invitational for the fourth time in its history on Friday 17th March for year 5, 6 and 7 students from around South Australia. There was again a great response with over 80 boys and girls participating in the day.

Special congratulations to players who reached the finals of both competitions. A huge thank you to both the Seaside Tennis Club and the Henley Beach South Tennis Club for use of their venues and support on the day. Thank you also to SSP Tennis Coaches Jason Kempf and Sharon Hambly for organising the draw and managing both tournaments. Thank you also to SSP Tennis students who also helped. Students competing must be congratulated on their competitiveness and sportsmanship shown throughout the day. We also thanks Parents for their support.

SSP GOLF PROGRAMAs part of our SSP Golf program our students have been planning and running coaching sessions at Henley Beach Primary School. Our golfers have been asked to prepare a series of 3 sessions with the primary school students focussing on skills such as swing development, chipping and putting. With the support of Allan Telford from Golf SA, our students designed engaging activities including a mini putt-putt course using basic equipment such as rope, cones and flags. Our students have found the experience very valuable in working with schools in our local community and helping to promote junior golf.

BADMINTON – KEITH EDISONIn March I played the Australian National Championships in Melbourne and I unfortunately lost in the Quarter Finals to the highest ranked Australian player who I have beaten before in a close 3 set match.

Following the national championships was the team event where South Australia came third place in a 3 way tie but we lost out on points. South Australia managed to beat Victoria who won the whole team event and during our tie against Victoria, I beat several national players and Commonwealth Games representatives which was a big win.

Overall the tournament was good but I wished I could have pulled through in the individual event but I have learnt from it and will be aiming to win it next year.

AUSTRALIAN CANOE SPRINT TITLES - PENRITHOur SSP Surf paddlers all stood up when required, a great effort. Jesse & Jessica lead the charge, with Jesse making the National Junior team. He went up an age group to do this. Charli is a year behind most of her competitors in that age group and won 2 B finals. Lincoln won gold in the K4 1000m.

Jesse was selected to be a part of the Junior Worlds Team who will go to Pitesti in Romania in July. This will mean 3 weeks training in Europe and then competition from the 27th to the 30th July. At the recent Surf State Titles he also won gold in the U17 ski race and gold in the U17 ski relay. Jessie is off to QLD to compete in the Aussie titles from 27th March until the 3rd April. Great Effort.

ATHLETICSIn the last weekend of March we have had two Henley High School students competing in Sydney at the Australian Athletics Championships.

Mitch Fairall competed in U18 Mens High Jump where he finished 9th with his best jump at 1.95m.

Courtney Lewis has been competing in the Shot Put and Discus and has won Bronze in both events, she also took nearly a second off of her time in her 100m sprint, a new PB of 14.94 seconds.

SSSSA STATE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPSHenley High School was again well represented in this year’s SSSSA State Tennis Championships with a total of 25 students competing - with many reaching quarter finals or better. The students below performed extremely well and require special mentions.

Open Boys – Congratulations to Brock Meuris the 1st seed for winning the open boys final 9-3. Brock had to fight back from 3-6 down in the final which was extremely impressive.

Open Girls – Congratulations to Selina Turulja the 1st seed for winning the open girls final. Selina did not drop a game from the day until the final, finishing off with a 9-2 final win.

Year 10 Boys – Congratulations to Nikolai Dobrovolski for winning the main draw. Nikolai defeated Koadai Niwa in the final 9-5.

Year 9 Boys – Well done to Terry Karahalios for making the Final, unfortunately losing 9-4. Also to Lachlan Hill who made the Semi Finals.

ICAS ENGLISH COMPETITION This year we are running the National ICAS English competition. All students are welcome to test their English skills against a wider cohort of students from across Australia. Each student will be able to see where their learning and understanding of a wide range of English skills sits across the country.

STUDENT MEDICAL INFORMATIONStudent Services are currently in the process of collecting updated student medical information for the 2017 school year. All student Health Care Plans need to be updated every 12 months unless otherwise stated in written form by a doctor. (E.g. Extended review date entered onto student’s updated health care plan.)

Emails will also be going home shortly to parents of students who have medication stored at the school. This will be to let you know if your student’s medication is out of date. We ask if parents could please replace any out of date medication as soon as practical, but do understand that doctors’ appointments are sometimes needed and may take time. If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact student services.

F1 IN SCHOOLS AUSTRALIAN FINALSIn February, Henley High School’s ‘Ludicrous Speed’ competed against the best 14 schools from around Australia in the National Finals of the F1 in Schools competition. The team, which included Blake Robertson, Alex Dawes, Amy Holland and Aryan Mathur designed and manufactured a CO2 powered racing car. The car has taken hundreds of hours to design over the past 12 months and included a full computer model, wind tunnel simulation and rigorous testing. We needed three cars for the competition and each car took approximately 30 hours to manufacture. This is the first time Henley has entered the competition and we were extremely happy to come 5th overall. With a new team just starting, we are hoping to improve on this great effort. CERTIFICATE I AND II IN ELECTROTECHNOLOGYHenley High School offers students the opportunity to study up to a Certificate II in Electrotechnology. This program offered from Year 10 onwards gives students the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to kick-start their career as an Electrician or Electrical Engineer. They learn about electronics, PCB assembly, household wiring and robotics with each year culminating in a major group project. This year students will be making a Racing Simulator in the Cert I and an Electric Vehicle in the Cert 2. For further information, please see Mr Kym Barrett.
