A MESSAGE FROM
THE PRINCIPAL March is shaping up to be a busy
month here at AK Wigg Public
School! The March Break is nearly
here and our students have been
hard at work so far in Term 2. In case
you didn’t already know, A.K. Wigg is
on Twitter! If you have a twitter
account, you can type in AKWigg to
follow us, or send us stuff to
@AKWWildcats. Each week, we try to
post a few pictures of some of the
wonderful lessons happening
throughout the building. We also post
to Twitter upcoming reminders of
things happening in the building - I
know some families have found this
very helpful.
This term our Grade 3 and Grade 6
students have taken part in mid-year
EQAO preparation tests in Language
and Mathematics. Students have
answered questions that are similar to
what they will be seeing in May/June
when they write the actual EQAO
tests. These assessments have in-
formed their teachers about areas
they need to focus in on. They also
provide teachers and students with
further information to inform instruc-
tion and support students through
teaching to specific areas of need.
It is the sincere hope of myself and
the staff that you and your family
have a safe and fun March Break!
Enjoy the break from routine and get
some well deserved rest!
Sincerely,
Ms. M. Zwolak
CHARACTER EDUCATION
The character education focus for the
month of March is “ Perseverance ”.
We demonstrate the effort and determina-
tion to complete a task to the best of our
ability and to stick to that task even when it
is difficult!
Congratulations to all
A.K. Wigg Students:
Due to your generosity
and donations from last
month’s muffin sale,
Mrs. Stefaniuk’s Grade
3 class was able to
symbolically adopt sev-
en at risk Ontario ani-
mals. Last Friday, our adoption certificated,
stuffed animals and important information
about each of our animals was delivered
and is now displayed just outside our
Grade 3 classroom!
Please take a moment to come down and
see what your efforts were able to do. Your
support of our Ontario wildlife muffin sale
will play an important part in protecting
Ontario’s animals and research into cli-
mate change
within Canada!
Well done A.K.
Wigg Wildcats and
thank-you from
the Grade 3’s.

“Pink Shirt Day” Took Place on February 22nd
At our recent assembly, we acknowledged that Pink Shirt Day is EVERYDAY! We reminded our
students of their rights to be included. We are proud to be an inclusive and equitable school. Our
Climate Survey data indicate that our students feel well supported by caring teachers and friends
with a strong sense of belonging in our school that exceeds the Canadian norm. Go Wildcats! :)
Immunizations
Immunization begins in early infancy and continues throughout life. Your child will receive the majority
of his or her immunizations between the ages of two months and six years of age.
Please take a moment to check your child’s Immunization Record (yellow card) to be sure his or her
immunizations are up-to-date. Immunizations work best when given on time.
For more information on childhood immunization, including the immunization schedule, speak with
your doctor or visit www.health.gov.on.ca.

WIGG WINTER CLASSIC
Our Early Act Club has been busy preparing for their annual hockey tournament, called
“Wigg Winter Classic” which is taking place on Friday, March 10th! Teams have been regis-
tering, donations have been collected and our students and staff are looking forward to a
wonderful day! Let’s keep our fingers crossed for great weather!
This year, the Club is continuing to collect donations for a longer term project to support the
building of a classroom in Haiti through the Free the Children Foundation. Thanks to your
continued support with our
charitable living, our “Hockey for Haiti” initiative is already well on its way to being a terrific
success!
MAKING SAFE LUNCHES AT HOME
Packing lunches for school takes time and energy but taking the time to follow these tips
could prevent a foodborne illness in your family.
CLEAN
Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm water before preparing any meal.
Make sure you routinely clean countertops, utensils and any lunchboxes or lunch bags.
Raw fruits or vegetables can be contaminated with bacteria. Wash them with clean water and a
scrub brush before
eating.
KEEP COLD FOOD COLD
Foods like meat, chicken, seafood, eggs and dairy products must stay cold to stay safe. Use
frozen freezer packs to keep food at or below 4C (40F).
Use an insulated lunch box/bag and keep it away from heat sources. Place freezer packs be-
tween food that needs to stay cold. Refrigerate items the night before to get your lunch box/
bag off to a cool start.
KEEP HOT FOOD HOT
Hot food must stay hot at above 60C (140F). Use insulated containers and keep them closed
until ready to eat, or take your food cold and reheat it in a microwave.
Please keep in mind that any leftover food items coming home in your child’s back pack can carry bacteria or
have the ability to support bacterial growth. These bacteria can grow rapidly to harmful levels when food safe-
ty precautions are not followed. If these items have not been properly stored, place them in your green bin, do
not consume them.

March is Nutrition Month
Fruits and veggies are not only absolutely delicious but they are nature’s fast food! Ready to eat and most come in their own “to-go” packages, produce makes the perfect snack for kids to grab and go. They need minimal to no preparation and buying ones in season means you can save some money and shop smarter. Think you can’t get much produce on a tight budget? Here are some tips to make shopping for produce more easy and affordable:
Don’t shop when you’re hungry and carry a list. You’ll be more likely to stick to your budget and nutritious food choices.
Look for washed and bagged salads, baby carrots, celery hearts, broccoli and cauliflower crowns, cherry to-matoes, and shredded cabbage in your grocery store
Buy fresh produce, like peaches or bananas, in varying degrees of ripeness to allow for some ripening to-wards the end of the week
Canned and frozen vegetables can be convenient choices
Spend most of your time in the produce, bread, meat and dairy sections
Use store flyers to help you find specials

ECO Team Update!
Wild Cats! Here's a job for you! Try to use both sides of the paper. Save the trees! It's called UBS.
Wild Cats, we are trying to turn off the lights every break, every day so we can save energy and also
for fun!
We are collecting used batteries instead of putting them in the garbage. We figured out they don’t
belong in the garbage.
A.K. Wigg is doing a good job at putting their garbage in the proper bins and recycling in the
recycling bins.
Refill your water bottle at our filtered water fountain. By using this fountain, A.K. Wigg has saved 33,164 water bottles so far!

Safety First!
Please note that students are not to arrive at school prior to 8:45 AM because supervision for students is not provided until this time. Exceptions to this rule are times when team practices have been set or when teachers have prearranged meetings outside of the school day. Students are to leave the building via their assigned outside doors immediately following dismissal at either 1:00 pm for lunch or 3:30 pm for home time.
Parents of Students in Grades 3 and 6 - Save the Dates! The EQAO Primary and Junior Assessment will take place between May 23 and June 6. Please refrain from booking appointments and/or vacations during this time period. Thanks in advance for your continued support.
Child Care
Starting to think about before and after school childcare for next year? A.K. Wigg hosts Way To Grow Daycare. Parents must register on the Niagara Region Child Care Registry Site. https://www.niagararegion.ca/living/childcare/childcare-waitlist-onelist.aspx or click on the link below.
Child Care Registry - Niagara Region, Ontario
Our registry eliminates the need to contact multiple child care provider and complete multiple appli-
cation forms - making it easier to find suitable care for your child.
Dance Club
The Primary Dance Club is in full swing! Children in Grades 1, 2 and 3 have been kicking up
their heels each Tuesday, while getting fit and having fun!
Don't forget to ask them at home to show you the Evolution of Dance 3, the Wobble, Fake ID
and Juju on that Beat!
Yearbook
The Yearbook Club (Grade 6 and 7 members) has been working very hard this year! They are
definitely becoming amateur photographers, taking cool shots all year long of clubs, teams and
special events around A.K. Wigg. As designers, they have been composing the many pages of
our 2016-2017 yearbook, and are excited to share the fruits of their labours. Sales of this
student driven book of A.K. Wigg memories will take place this coming April, and they
encourage all A.K. Wigg Wildcats to consider purchasing this wonderful memory.
If you have a home business and would like to advertise in our yearbook, please get in touch with the office or Mrs. Stefaniuk as soon as possible. Costs for advertising in our yearbook are: Business card size $25, Quarter page $40, Half page $70 and Full page $120.
