Bugle Call August 2016

Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Grace and Peace to you from God the Father; From our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; In,

With, and Through the Holy Spirit. Amen. First of all, I have a couple of items that are needful of response. Some of you have expressed interest in extend-

ing the summer worship time into the fall schedule, meaning keeping worship at 9:00 a.m. year round. As far as my

stance on this prospect, I can see advantages both ways. Should you desire strongly, one way or the other, please make your opinion known to a Council member. Your input is valuable.

The next item I’d like some response to is whether they may be some interest in taking a week, next summer or

fall, and, whoever is interested, traveling to the fishing lodge in Canada where I have been going for the past twenty-plus

years. The camp is Mcintosh Lodge near Vermillion Bay, Ontario, Canada. You may search it at www.mcintoshlodge.ca We have had some wonderful trips there. The fish are usually cooperative, tasty, and plentiful. On one excursion up

there, about 10 years ago, my brother and I, and two others caught 49 muskies in one week. The largest was a 48 incher.

If you’ve never battled a toothy Esox, and really desire the opportunity, this may be the place for you. It should be under-stood that history is not indicative of future results; no promises are being made. That’s why they call it ‘fishing’ and not

‘catching.’ A cold front could put the fish down for a few days. Regardless, this could be a journey that we take to com-

bine fishing, hiking, and sight-seeing with a nightly Bible study or book review. Possibilities abound, so if there is inter-est in doing this, please let me know and we can explore it further. In the meantime, check out their website for additional

details.

It can all be tied back to fishing. I used to get quite upset when fishing, and then losing a large fish. I lost a big

fish just yesterday on Lake Redstone, but it didn’t upset me. But in years past I’ve been known to throw a rod or two down in disgust, and perhaps let loose with what could be called, well, colorful language. Differing perspectives have put

to rest (mostly) for me what I believe to be useless anger. I can still get angry; it just doesn’t manifest itself (usually) in

physical or verbal displays. So that is where I’d like to spend some time in this article. It seems to me that this Presidential election cycle has

tapped into the general discontent, and even anger, of the American people. All sides are involved in this activity, from

fanning the flames, to explaining why the other candidate just doesn’t have the temperament to be President. I’m not go-

ing to put forward my own political viewpoint in this writing, but I will urge all who read this to carefully, and prayerful-ly, consider the options in this Presidential election, and then to vote your conscience.

What I am going to do, however, is pose a question that needs to be pondered. What ever happened to the spirit

of gentleness when discussing an issue, or simply acting in a gentle way? Has gentleness in this country gone the way of the Do-Do bird?

Watching the news (I favor CNN, as it seems the most objective network) on a daily basis just gets more and

more depressing. Divisive political rhetoric, a failed coup d’état in a NATO ally country, and the recent killings and am-bushes of Police officers who are just trying to do an impossible job. Gentleness, kindness, love, tolerance, and patience

all seem to be lacking in so many parts of our lives, especially the parts of our lives that are displayed on national media.

Whoever thought that the circumvention of the gifts of the Holy Spirit was a good idea?

Scripture certainly does not advocate the suspending of common decency. In the Hebrew Bible, Proverbs 15:4 tells us, “A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”

Likewise, in the New Testament, Philippians 4:4-5, the Apostle Paul instructs us to, “Rejoice in the Lord always;

again I will say, rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone.” These words from the Bible tell us, in no uncertain terms, the fruits of gentleness, and an instruction to show our

gentleness to others. Now, I will admit that I have not always acted in that fashion. I know that it is meet and right so to

do, but I am as complicit as anyone else in sometimes not showing gentleness to others. It happens; doesn’t make it right. In worship over the past two Sundays we referred to the greatest commandment: ‘To love the Lord our God with

all our heart, soul, strength, and mind’. And the second, which is like it: ‘To love our neighbor as ourselves’. Those are

things that will be difficult to do without a gentle heart, and showing God’s love for us to others, and to ourselves, who so

desperately need to abide in God’s love.

God’s Peace to you all.

Pastor Don

\ Spiritual Reflection for July 2016

Facing the Giants in Life My grandchildren asked me to run a 5K with them in July. So, I will run a 5K in July. It is funny how hard it is to say no to grandchildren! I am really not a runner and for those of you who may remember some of my reflec-tions from several years ago I have done only a little dabbling in running (jogging) and I was quite happy to put those days behind me. Once again I am facing an event I am afraid I can’t do. I am reminded of the giants we peri-odically face in life. Let me explain. When I begin my “run” I can either go downhill from my house or uphill. You can imagine which way I pre-fer to go? Of course, it is downhill and it was my choice for the first weeks of my re-training. One day I stood and looked uphill. Believe me I did not want to even start to run uphill. It was as if I had lead in my shoes. I had a pit in my stomach and there was a whirlwind of negative thoughts going through my mind. I was facing a steep quarter-mile grade towering over my heart like a giant. I heard God softly whisper, “I am with you always”. Even in my silly fear of jogging uphill? Yes, God was with me. I took off that morning realizing God had something to tell me about facing the giants in life. So up I went. We all face giants in our lifetime and often not just one, but one after another. The giants come disguised in the form of loss, addiction, change, declining health, low self-esteem, tough choices, harmful relationships and daunting conversations. These giants have one thing in common. They ooze fear. They breathe fear down our necks and spew words and phrases into our minds like; you are not good enough, you are a failure, you are weak, no one loves you, you will always be alone, you don’t know what you are talking about, you can’t do it. These words hurt and often they stop us in our tracks. We cower away. We busy ourselves with activity to distract us and take our mind off of our fears. The giant backs us into a corner where fear then veils us from the truth and we begin to believe what we hear in fear. There is another voice, the voice of truth; we need to hear coming from the spirit within to gain courage to fight the giant. We are not failures, “’For I know the plans I have for you’, says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope’”, Jeremiah 29:11. We are strong, “For I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me strength”, Philippians 4:13. We are loved, “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love”, John 15:9. We are never alone, “…and be sure of this I am with you always even to the end of the age”, Matthew 28:20. We can persevere, “Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid of them! The Lord your God will go ahead of you. He will not fail you nor forsake you”, Deuteronomy 31:6. These are the truths we must hold onto in fighting against the giants of life.

Armed with the truth and willing to allow others to support you along the way you can fight any giant. You can reach your goals one forward step at a time and can even go further than you imagine (my goal of one mile that day resulted in 2 miles!). Set out on your journey calling out for strength and guidance and with God’s love and grace you, too, will overcome fear. You will courageously face the giants of life. Questions to ponder: What giants do I face today? How will I use God’s truth in my fight? Who has God placed in my path as an encourager? How will I prepare for that first step toward that which I fear? May God’s Peace be Yours, Tammy Koenecke, RN, BSN, MASL Spiritual Care Coordinator, RAMC

VBS August 8-12 (6-8pm)

Come join the fun at Vacation Bible School at “Barnyard Roundup.” At Barnyard

Roundup kids will look into the Bible, God’s Holy Word, to discover Jesus is their BFF.

In fact, Jesus is better than a BFF. Jesus knows them by their name, rounds them up,

and brings them home. Jesus is with us always and forever – no matter what. At Barn-

yard Roundup we will hear barn raising stories, along with green pasture singing,

creating udderly cool crafts, having bales of fun games, & enjoying bountiful blessing

snacks. Friday, August 8th

is potluck where all are welcome to come and hear about

our Barnyard Roundup week.

Come help us decorate Saturday, August 6th

@ 10:00 am and if we need to we will finish Sunday

morning following worship.

VBS - LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

We are still in need of volunteers for this year's VBS. Dates are Aug. 8-12, evenings. We need group leaders to

help keep the group moving from one activity to another. And even people to help with any skits or puppetry

needed. If you have interest, or would be so kind to donate your time, please contact Heidi Schlieckau

([email protected]). We'd like to have a few men this year too.

Luther League & Confirmation Youth - Summer Activities

August 14, Sunday afternoon – Kayaking @ Mirror Lake State Park – Cost is FREE. RSVP

by August 4 to [email protected]. We’ll be carpooling to Mirror Lake State Park to kayak &

maybe even hike a little. We’ll leave after church, and return around 3:00pm. If you have a kayak,

bring it. Otherwise, we’ll need to reserve the kayaks at the park ASAP. It was a fun time last year.

We hope you and a friend will go to this event this year. Lunch will be provided.

FAITH NIGHT / WEDNESDAYS - LOOKING FOR GROUP LEADERS

Beginning in mid-September, we are moving Sunday School from Sundays to Wednesdays and calling it Faith Night. We are looking for some Group Leaders to help rally the kids and teach set lesson plans. Council News –August 2016

Greetings,

This news article is being composed before our monthly council meeting.

Check out this:

The church garden (a.k.a. Mike’s garden) is blooming and very fragrant! Take a walk around it to see all of

the flowers. Mike was telling me that he thought a variety of flowers he planted had not survived, but they

did! Now they are taller than the ones planted behind them. Some hidden gems, so take a walk to enjoy

their beauty.

Plans are being made for The Shepherd’s Café & Market. Please plan on helping the team to make it a suc-

cess!

Church council will be having a special speaker at our monthly meeting, I have arranged for Pastor Erik

Jelinek to speak to our group. More details about that to come next month.

Daily activities with Lutheran Social Services using our church basement are going well. Sign up for a Tues-

day or Thursday lunch serving. If you have any comments/concerns please contact me.

A note about possible church service starting times. Council would like your opinion about Sunday church

service starting at the traditional time Sept.-May of 10:00 a.m. or leaving it at the summer schedule -

starting at 9:00 a.m. all year round.

We are here to listen to all of you.

Please continue to keep council in your prayers.

JOY,

Lorinda Broughton

Pastor Don will be on vacation from August 18th through August 27th. Pastor Don will be putting the worms

and minnows on Betty’s fishing hook (and taking the fish off, hopefully) while enjoying God’s beautiful crea-

tion from the Canadian perspective. Betty will probably stitch or knit more than go fishing.

Pastor Erich Hartenberger will be on call for pastoral needs. He can be reached at (608) 448-7152, cell, and

608-544-4072, office.
