It is always a pleasure to see the students dressed up and celebrating the end of their formal schooling. Mrs Ashleigh Richards and her team did a fabulous job organising such a special occasion. Thank you to Mr Aaron McDonald for his excellent job as MC for the evening. The speeches were inspirational and heart felt. Students should all be proud of where they have come from and should hold it dear to their heart to be the final year to graduate from Ballina High School. Well done to all on a successful night and good luck to all with your future endeavours. Yours in Education Daniel Henman Final Principal of Ballina High School 2017

HSC exams are over and I am sure I can hear the sighs of relief from parents/carers and students. Ballina High School Year 12 had their final schooling moment take place at their Formal last night at the RSL Club.

On Friday night Southern Cross Year 12 will attend their formal and be looking just as glamorous and grown up. We wish all our students the best for the night, their results and their future.

Over the last weeks we have begun consulting with our parents and community on where we are heading as a school in the next three years.

We have decided to have a Friends of Ballina Coast High School group who meet twice a term to have a voice in our school and the learning. It is not a fundraising committee. It does not require any work. You are welcome to come along with questions, suggestions, support or to simply listen. We will take minutes and load these on our web page. Please think about joining with us once, twice, irregularly or regularly. In 2018 we will be launching so I hope you think about coming along. Year 7 Coffs Harbour CampOn the first of November, Year 7 left for their three day camp in Coffs Harbour. We all arrived at school really early - because the bus was leaving at 8:30 - and loaded our things onto the bus. We said a final goodbye to our parents, and we all hopped on the bus, excited for the long journey ahead. And boy, was it a long journey, it took forever! We stopped at Grafton for a food break, and continued on our way.

When we arrived at Coffs, we went to Dolphin Marine Magic. We met (and got kissed) by dolphins, hugged sea lions, looked at penguins and more. We also saw a show with dolphins and sea lions. It was great fun. Unfortunately, it came to an end and we had to get back on the bus.

When we arrived at our camp, the hosts explained how everything worked. We got split up into our cabins, and had allocated time to prepare everything and set up our rooms. The way the camp worked was by music. Every time you heard a certain song, it meant you had to go somewhere. Sometimes it was for food, and sometimes it was to tell you to assemble in your groups (not cabins) and go off to your next activity.

That night, we only did one activity, and that was capture the flag. We all went out into a separate section of the camp and got split into two groups, then we went out onto the field. The field was awesome. There were huge walls made out of wood and tyres to hide people, and a flag inside a circle, where the team who played on that side couldn’t enter. We played in the evening before finally heading back to the camp and getting prepared for bed.

The next day was a thrill. We did most activities, and got fed constantly. We were not pushed and forced into doing something we didn’t want to do, as they just wanted us to have a good time. Some of the activities include the following.

The Mega Swing

You get strapped into a harness, then attached to some more ropes. Your team pull you higher and higher, until you tell them to stop, and then you pull a rope and you get detached from another rope - the one your team was pulling - and you swing back and forth.

Canoeing

We went canoeing out in the lake near the park. We all played some games on the canoes and had an awesome time, except for the fact you came out SOAKED!! People tend to enjoy splashing others I noticed!

The Skywire

Basicly a zipline/flying fox that goes almost across the entire park.

Zorb Ball

The Zorb ball was by far one of the best activities we did. You and a partner got strapped into this huge ball, facing each other, and rolled down a hill.

We all rotated activities, doing only three this day. This was because in the afternoon, everyone went to do a commando course, in mud, and we had to crawl through it in parts. Yes, almost every Year 7 student on camp finished the day head to toe in mud. It was disgusting. Although the course was fun, and everyone had a great time, I know for a fact that pretty much EVERY girl on camp could not get the foul stink out of their hair for AGES!!

On the last day, we all did our final activities before loading all our stuff onto the bus. The Adventure Centre was nice enough to make us lunch - which was delicious, might I add - and we stopped at Grafton to eat it. Then we came home, our parents picked us up, and we all went home to sleep, because we hadn’t had any over the last three days.

The Real Thor!In class we have been studying the Vikings. The Vikings came from Scandinavia; they lived in longhouses with the poorer families sharing their homes with their animals. The women worked hard cooking and providing for their families, whilst the men were traders and invaded other countries. They sailed in Longboats called Drakkars usually made from oak trees; they used the boats to trade and to invade Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the United Kingdom.

We learnt to write our name in runes and discovered that the runes held magical powers for the Vikings so they would inscribe them on their weapons for battle. We also discovered they had many Gods who helped them through life; Thor was the God of Thunder and Storms. Below are some of the things we made in class, longboats, shields, and runes, a map of the invasions, weapons and longhouses.

NC SLS Carnival at Bonnie HillsOn Wednesday 1st November four Ballina Coast High School students competed in the North Coast Surf Life Saving carnival at Bonnie Hills. Matt Tapping, Riley Green, Liam O’Conner and Geoff Tapping swam, ran and paddled their way to a number of medals, including a first place for Liam in his first event of his first-ever carnival. The boys had a great time and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

On the day he will be presenting his engaging and entertaining “Decide Your Own Destiny” Nathan’s stories of overcoming adversity and disability at a young age, to follow his dreams and achieve success are an inspiration for others to do the same. We invite all community members to attend his talk at 9:30 am in the school Gym.

Other activities on the day will include a performance of “Mind, Made Me”, by Byron Youth Theatre and interactive workshops with FSG. A variety of activities and sporting events will be offered in the afternoon.

In conjunction with this day a ‘Photos are Phun’ competition is being run to promote positive imagery. Photos can be of any subject as long as the image portrays a positive or uplifting message. Further details for submission will be given in the daily notices.

All students will attend the wellbeing expo and are invited to come dressed in house colours to show positive team spirit. The theme for the mufti day is comfortable, cheap and cheerful and a gold coin donation is requested for local charity. In the morning there will be a $1 BBQ breakfast as well as a smoothie and muffin stall at recess.
