KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 8 - 2017 Thursday 23 rd March, 2017 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Thank you to all our families who attended the Family Fun Night last Thursday night. After the spate of hot weather, we had a cooler day with rain in the morning, however we were still able to hold the picnic tea and various activities outside on the basketball courts and synthetic turf. It was great to see so many of the children enjoying the activities organized by the staff, including skipping, Gaga, and the 3 legged race! From the beginning of the year we have trialled having school assembly on Friday afternoon. I would like to thank all the parents who assisted on Family Fun Night in providing opinion regarding the trialled change. There were responses in favour of Friday afternoon, Monday morning and suggestions for other options, including separate F-2 and 3-6, or mornings during summer and afternoons in winter. All will be considered by the staff within the timetabled classes and learning. We conducted the Annual General Meeting of the Kurunjang School Council on Tuesday night and welcomed the new parent and Department of Education members for 2017. Liz Bajada was elected President for a second term, Elise Ullrich, Vice-President and Aloysious Ducanha as Treasurer. Membership of the school council subcommittees in Finance, Education and Policy, Buildings and Grounds, and PFA were also determined but if any parent would also like to serve on one of the subcommittees, please let us know. You are most welcome and you do not need to serve on school council to participate. The 2016 Annual Report was presented to school council for their endorsement and included the summary and data for the school in the areas of school’s context, achievement, engagement, wellbeing and financial position. If you were unable to attend the AGM but are interested in reading the Annual Report please enquire at the office. We are very excited that next Wednesday we are having Mary Catherine Swanson, founder of the longest running not-for- profit, whole school reform program in the USA, and now in Australia, entitled Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), visit our school and Kurunjang Secondary College. The AVID program is in 46 of the 50 states of America and 5 of the 7 states and territories in Australia and is aimed at training children in the strategies for achieving success and readiness for higher education and work. Mary was named the 2001 Time and CNN Best Teacher in America and is regarded as one of the most inspirational and innovative educators of recent times. She is in Melbourne for 6 days, conducting training and evening seminars. Kurunjang Primary and Kurunjang Secondary are the only schools she is visiting during her stay. Next Friday is the last day for students in Term one. Students will be dismissed for the holidays at 2.10pm and assembly will be held in the gym at 1.30pm. LOOK WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN

5/6 STEELE THIS WEEK

This week in 5/6 Steele, students have been learning mental strategies for solving addition problems. One of the strategies we have learnt is the ‘Split Strategy’. This is where you break a number up into place-value parts. e.g. 46 + 52 becomes 40 + 6 + 50 + 2. We then take the tens and add them together 40 + 50 = 90 and take the ones and add them together 6 + 2 = 8. We then add the tens and ones back together giving us the answer 98.
