Lire la suite Middle School ‘CTP4 Preparation Activities’ Between Monday 21 st January to Thursday 24 th January, every student in Middle School will undertake two ‘CTP4 Preparation activities’ (in Maths and English) to help them prepare for the style of questions in the actual CTP4 tests scheduled for the week commencing 11 th March. Option choice meeting Wednesday January 16th / 18h00 in the Eiger Auditorium The option choice meeting for parents of students in Grade 8 will be held on Wednesday January 16th at 18h00 in the Eiger Auditorium. The High School Programme options, including Advanced Placements, will be presented, as well as the International Programme options, including the IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme. Visiting Author This year’s Visiting Author is Anne Fine. Anne Fine is a very distinguished author who has written over fifty titles for both adults and children. She became a Children’s Laureate in 2001 and her books Goggle-Eyes and Flour Babies have earned her the prestigious Carnegie Medal twice. Her books are bound to make children think while entertaining them at the same time. And as she herself would say “Since I write for the reader inside myself, I always end up with the kind of book I would have loved to read (if only someone else had bothered to write it for me).” Her books Bill’s New Frock and Google-Eyes have been adapted and screened by the BBC and her novel Madame Doubtfire was made into a film by Twenty Century Fox, starring Robin Williams. In the evening of Monday, 4th February she will present to parents and teachers. Then on Tuesday she will be addressing Primary School and on Wednesday, Middle School. Mathletics Mania !
Pupils in Mrs Kruk’s class (Grade 3/2) have been makingthe most of the activities on offer through the onlineMathletics site this term.They have been participating regularly in Live Mathletics –competing with students from across Europe in exciting, quick-fire Maths Games. The class was so successful that they werebeen placed in the top 50 on the Roll of Honour!! One student, Thijs van der Geer, remarkably, spent sometime as Number 1 European Student. Congratulations to allconcerned – and keep calculating!!!!
High School
Dates for the diary…
The Option Choice meeting for parents of students in Grade9, Grade 10, IGCSE 2 and grade 11 will be held on Thursday,January 17th at 18h00 in the Eiger Auditorium. The HighSchool Diploma Programme options, including AdvancedPlacements, will be presented, as well as the InternationalBaccalaureate Diploma programme. Please note thatstudents in IGCSE year 1 and IB year 1 will not need tochoose their options as they will continue with the samecourses, therefore there will be no meeting for their families.
Starting on the 18th of January the IB2 students will betaking their French oral exams which are an important partof their IB internal assessment. These assessments aremoderated by external examiners and normally contributebetween 20% and 30% of the total mark.
This week the IB1 students will start the process of selectinga subject and topic for their extended essays. The extendedessay is an in-depth study of a focused topic of up to 4000words. It offers an opportunity to investigate a topic of specialinterest, it develops creative and critical thinking as well asserious academic skills. It is an essential part of the IB DiplomaProgramme. MADS Trip to Ghana: There are still places available on thetrip for students to visit and work in the orphanage in Ghanathat we have supported since 2009. The proposed dates are3rd – 13th July 2013. More information is available from MsRoss in the High School office.

Judo ClassesJU-DO translates from Japanese as the "gentle way" or "flexibleapproach". It is the perfect combination of martial art andcompetitive combat sports. It is also the only martial art inwhich safety is foremost, being taught to the point of being anobsession. Judo is taught by Boris S Stevens (a 3rd dan blackbelt Judo expert from the Swiss Judo Federation and ex-CDLpupil). As an extracurricular activity Judo is offered from preschool(Wednesdays) and primary up until class 5 (Tuesdays). Whatstarted off as a small group of 6 primary pupils at CDL 3 yearsago has become a vibrant class of 22 passionate judokastoday. They are a dynamic and enthusiastic bunch traininghard every Tuesday afternoon, striving for physical excellencein our makeshift dojo in the basement of the Cervin building. Inthe same time CDL Judo has become a well-respected entity inthe cantonal Geneva judo scene. CDL Judo had a technical skills assessment at the end of theautumn term last December. We would like to congratulate 18of them for having achieved an impressive standard oftechnical excellence. A special mention goes to Paul Herzersfor his excellent exam. As it stands the CDL judo class has 1orange belt (Romeo Alting-Carpentier), 1 orange-yellow belt(Mats Saillieu), 9 yellow belts and 11 yellow/white belts. Upcoming there are 3 external judo tournaments betweenJanuary and June. We hope that most of CDL judokasparticipate at these events as worthy ambassadors of CDLExtracurricular Program. We wish them the best of luck! We also offer also a Self-Defence class for girls (classes 7-12)taught by Ju-Jitsu expert Mme Martine Guenat (Wednesdays). Maybe come for a free trial lesson...?

Preschool PFA / APE Happy New Year from your Pre-School PFA!

SKI: The CDL Intramural Ski Championships will take place onThursday Jan. 31st in Crozet France. This giant slalomcompetition is open to all advanced secondary students. Thereare 45 places available. For more information and the entryform, please stop by the PE/Sports office.
BASKETBALL: The traditional Varsity Boys – Staff/Teachers“Showdown in the Dome” game will be played on MondayJanuary 21 @ 16h30. The game is one of the most popularevents on the sports calendar and usually of very high level.Spectators are most welcome for what promises to beanother exciting game.

Congratulations to teachers Victoria Wilson, Olly Corbinand Thomas Heatherington who received the first Middleand High School PFA Teacher Innovation Fund (TIF) grant. Thethree will use the grant to purchase equipment for InternationalAward activities. TIF grants are a new initiative to supportCDL faculty. A second grant application deadline is in April.

A lovely way to finish off the yearOn the last day of term, the students of Homeroom 8/5enjoyed a very civilised moment between future internationalleaders. Everyone brought in their own fork and glass to avoidcreating more garbage.Visitors to the class appreciated the incredibly civilisedatmosphere and noted how every single student was happilyparticipating. It represented everything an International Schoolwould want for its students - environmental awareness, fullinclusion, multiculturalism, civility and comradery.A truly multicultural and festive way to finish off the year.
