From the President’s Desk: As we usher in yet another year, we celebrate the early com-
pletion of the 2013 Island Guide. By December 27th, the 20,000 cop-ies of the newest edition were on a truck heading north AND south from Portland, Oregon printer Journal Graphics.
3500 copies were delivered to Tempe, Arizona where they will be mailed out as a part of an Alaska Travel Package with other bro-chures from throughout Alaska. The mail out will happen mid-January. Stay tuned for a later report on the destination of these 3500 Guides.
Several boxes were mailed out by the request of a few of our members to lower 48 destinations to be displayed at shows around the northwest.
The remainder of the Guides were trucked to Chamber mem-ber Northland Services in Seattle and will arrive on POW during the second week of January. Northland will deliver them to their ‘temporary’ home in the backroom of the chamber office where Klawock School students will help unload and stack.
An advance box will be shared with the Board of Directors and all those who were involved in the production of the 2013 Guide.
On January 24th, your chamber will host the first ever CHAM-BER AFTER HOURS event on Prince of Wales Island. Members are in-vited to the Chamber office between 5 and 7PM for refreshments, a bit of networking, and a celebration (and disbursement!) of the 2013 Island Guide.
Already a few of our members have indicated their interest in hosting a future CHAMBER AFTER HOURS event in their places of busi-ness. Please let the office staff know if you would like to be on our list for a future event in 2013 or even beyond! Your event can be advertised in the preceding issue of this POWer newsletter along with anything you would like to share about your business!

Now that Sharon and I have been through our first Island Guide creation and publication,
we have some suggestions to make our job go a bit smoother. Let’s talk about PHOTO
SUBMISSIONS. We received many fabulous photographs from many talented people.
Thank you so much………..but here are some suggestions for the submission for the next
Island Guide:
The name of your photo file MUST include:
Your LAST name
The LOCATION where it was taken
WHAT the subject is, or who
If we can make this the normal way to submit photo’s it will make the Guide Committee’s
job so much easier because, and let me give you a scenario; the lead proofer calls and
states, I need a photo of Kasaan, I know we saw one, can you find it?, we need it now!!
We then have to look through 27 files of 827 photos that are titled……IMG0452, etc., and
try to guess where the photo was taken! So now you understand!

On December 21st Sharon and I hosted our first open house at the office and would like to
thank those of you that took time out of your busy Christmas schedule to stop by and
have some refreshments! We believe this was a success and met some new faces in our
community!! Check out page 13 for the photos!
With the 2013 Island Guide at the printer’s our lives here at the office should slow down
and we can focus on other issues we are facing. There so many projects here at the office
to accomplish, so Sharon and I will be concentrating on those minor items that need to be
created and cleaned up. Mark your calendars for our first “AFTER HOURS” on January
24th to introduce the new 2013 Island Guide!

The same side of the Moon always faces the Earth. The Moon’s rotation period is synchronous with
it revolution period around the Earth. Because of a loss of orbital energy to gravity from the Earth,
the Moon is very gradually moving away from the Earth. In the very early history of the Earth, the
Moon looked about 3 times larger in apparent size in the sky, because it was closer to the earth!
The temperature fluctuates from roughly +300 ° F to -270 ° F, because there is no atmosphere to
regulate the temperature.

Highlights taken from the “Prince of Wales Hatchery Association” letter
I’d like to thank Chuck Haydu, President of our Board of Directors, for loaning us the use of his Skid-steer loader this past fall. Our Case W4 loader has been in the shop for some time. It would have been tough to go thru the fall without this, Chuck- thanks a million!
The first day of eggtakes was on October 31st. The crew had several hundred ripe coho females sorted, and ready to go. It was so good to have the help of volunteers this year! Allen Edsall, a board member,
was there on most, if not all days helping with drying buckets, spawning bowls, and recording data. Technicians are badly needed for the fall program, but have received no applicants, so the volunteers were there for us!
It takes a team of 7 or 8 people to do an eggtake, and do quality work. We could have gotten by with fewer helpers, but with the extra hands, we did a better job, and the eggs really looked good. We hit our 5 million egg target, too!!

Photo #2, you see Mike Douville up close, rinsing eggs with other crew in background. Photo # 3, Savana Ververs can be seen as she gently delivers fertilized eggs into an incubator. Photo # 4 shows the renovated incubation room, and the new plumbing which allows for recirculation of warmed water. Photo #5 Dale Music volunteers his time and chainsaw to cut up chunk logs that we get from Viking Lumber. We use a wood splitter to turn these rounds of wood into chunks we burn in the Heatmor Stove. Mike Bush, of B-3 Contractors, Inc, provides the dump truck to transport log chunks to our “boneyard” .
Craig High School Alaska Naturalist class visited the hatchery , and many of the students had a chance for some “hands-on” involvement. The group broke up into small groups and observed how each of the members of the spawning team were doing their job. Two students worked with me for some time, learning how to introduce eggs into incubators. All the stu-dents did a really great job, and from what I hear, they had a good time helping! Thanks to everyone from the Craig High School Science Department, for helping make these field trips happen! I can only hope that a few of the students will choose aquaculture as a career.
I am very thankful for volunteers. People like Mike Bush, and Dale Music, give of their own time, and offer the use of their personal equipment, to help the hatchery cut operating costs. Burning wood instead of diesel oil will surely make a differ-ence. And when I can’t find enough employees to help spawn the adult cohos, the members of the Board of Directors turn out, and volunteer their personal time, to get the job done. I can’t say it loudly enough, or often enough- I am very thank-ful for volunteers.
“What can I do to help?” you might ask yourself. If you’re interested in serving on the Board of Directors, attend one of our meetings. Every third Tuesday of every month (except during June, July and August) we meet at the Klawock River Hatchery Conference Room. Your unique background and experience can make the Board a more diverse entity. Consider joining this Board, and help make a difference.
This organization is becoming a major contributor of cohos to the common property fishermen in Southeast Alaska. If you are a charter boat operator, commercial or sport fisherman, then that means you. Do you “really like cohos”? as Dale Music
told me? Give what you can to the hatchery, to help keep it going. Your tax-deductible donations will help keep this private nonprofit company alive. Or, you can stop by the hatchery, and get to know the staff. Let us show you all the positive changes we have made during these past two years. This is a special place. It’s Your community hatchery, so please, care about it, and support it.
And last, but not least, I want to thank my crew, for all their efforts this past year. We have done a great job, and can be proud of all our accomplishments!

2012 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS READY TO MAIL!
In 2012, Chamber underwriters made possible the award of 12
scholarships to Island graduates from POW High Schools. These annual
awards are worth $500 and are sent to the recipient’s College, University
or Trade School.
Recipients are required to send first-term transcripts to the Cham-
ber to prove good standing with a minimum 2.0 GPA.

MEMBERSHIP STARTS WITH THAT FIRST SHEET OF PAPER!
The Membership Binder in the chamber office contains
221 very IMPORTANT primary documents: the member-
ship application that contains all the important infor-
mation that produces the annual Island Guide and the
Business Directory of the Chamber website. This is only
the beginning of the tasks that are tracked on this form.
Members first see this updated form in July/August when the Chamber begins
the annual ritual of renewing memberships and adding new members to the
Chamber roll. The actual application and it’s backup pieces are essential to a
long list of tasks that must be done with each blank that contains members infor-
mation.
All those sheets of paper, once processed into QuickBooks and Excel for tracking,
are placed in the binder. They are used on September 1st and October 1st to
produce entries into the two early bird drawings for IFA tickets. Our thanks for
the early returns.
Each sheet tracks payments as they are received, and are stamped PAID, or
TRADE, or RECIPROCAL (in the case of our fellow chambers in the region).
The office managers marks each sheet when the window decal and thank
you card is sent to renewing and new members.
The office Staff and volunteers work on the Island Guide and go back to each
member’s paper file during each phase of the production process. The final
proofing of the Business Directory in the new Island Guide is performed by
our two office managers-one reading aloud each file: word by word, number
by number, while the other matches what she hears to what is approved for
insertion in the Guide.
The binder is gone through again to produce the list of ads that have been or-
dered for the Guide. The Guide producer uses this list to set aside the ad space
needed in the publication. 74 are set to appear in the 2013 Island Guide, just
down from the 76 ads in 2012.
The Binder is referenced countless times during the year and is the first place
where any changes requested by members are noted.
And in 2013, again this process will start over again………….

PAYROLL LAW CLASS, December 5, 2012, Anchorage, Alaska

First let me give you the disclaimer. . . in no way do we give tax advice and recommend before you make any
changes, it is imperative you talk to your accountant or tax advisor.
That said, you would think after 50 years of bookkeeping there would not be anything new to learn. Wrong!
The class, put on by Fred Pryor Seminars, a non-profit division of PARK University Enterprises, was attended by
40 plus people from all over the state and besides the instructor (who was very good), many had problems and
issues to share that gave additional insight into a lot of the topics that were discussed.
Let me give you a brief out line of some of the high points:
I 9’s. - more time was spent on this one topic than any other. It appears that this is the area where
most businesses receive the largest penalties.
$50.00 for each line not completed correctly.
$3 to $5,000 for a working employee without an I-9 on record.
$50.00 per line for I -9’s with only copies of I D attached.
Penalties for I-9’s stored incorrectly.
What you need to do before an audit. (INS continues to do more audits and it coul-
save your business hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to review your I-9 proce-
dures.)
Salaried employees that are not exempt from overtime.
“White Collar” Executive Exempt.
Overtime on “tips”
Employee verses Private Contractor? Are you apt to be charged workers comp, State unemployment
tax or FICA and Medicare on a contractor that is working for you?
Fringe benefits, taxable or non-taxable?
I still, after all these years have problems myself with the Salaried employees that get overtime. It can be a real
pain to keep track of, especially if they get commissions. The same thing in including overtime for tipped em-
ployees. It is a pain to manually calculate each one but I have yet to see a system that does it correctly.
I’m hoping there are some members that would like more detailed
information on the above topics and other information I picked up at
the class.

End of 2012 Inter-Island Ferry Authority Tidings
The Inter-Island Ferry carried 44,793 passengers and 10,018 vehicles be-tween our Hollis and Ketchikan ports during 2012. Driver free begins Janu-
ary 1, 2013 and continues through April 30, 2013. There are no sailings Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The Inter-Island Ferry will cover the
Lituya’s sailings between Metlakatla and Ketchikan January 10, 2013 through January 25, 2013. The Metlakatla sailings will not change our
8:00am departures out of Hollis or our 3:30pm departures out of Ketchikan.
Icy and slippery winter conditions are still here so please be careful on walkways and while driving. If you need assistance with boarding or
disembarking the vessel, we will be glad to help. Please allow extra travel time to our Hollis terminal due to the
Klawock Hollis Highway road construction and winter road conditions. Drive Safely!!

Farmer’s Market Committee to Hire Seasonal Manager
The POW Farmer’s Market committee met November 2 in Thorne Bay and decided to advertise for a manager to organize and over-see Farmers Market events for 2013. The salary will be $20 an hour plus travel allowances. The manager would likely work 40-hour weeks during March, April and May, and then 20 hour weeks through October. The committee would like to have a manager on board in early March and trained in time for the first Farmer’s Mar-ket event of the year on May 25, to be held in Craig in conjunction with the POW International Marathon.
The next committee meeting is Feb. 1, 10 am, Thorne Bay, City Hall.

P.O.W. Runners and Walkers Club Declares 2012 a Winning Year
As we gaze back on our activities from 2012, we would like to take this opportuni-
ty to express our gratitude for all of the walkers and runners who took part in our fun runs
and walks during this past year. We are equally appreciative of those individuals, business-
es, and organizations which helped us with these events in various ways. We have seen
our participation in these events increase overall and are extremely pleased with that
trend.
Our most recent fun event was on December 15, when we staged our annual Jin-
gle Bell Fun Run and Walk, starting at the Klawock AC Market. Toeing the start line were
participants from ages 6 ½ months (one of our stroller hitch hik-
ers) to an 80-year old jubilant walker. Some participants even had
their tail-wagging canines along with them to provide good cheer.
It was a festive and happy time for all 30-plus participants. Espe-
cially decorated bells were given out along with other goodies for
all to enjoy.
This is also an opportune time to look ahead to 2013 and
note that we have the following fun events scheduled for the first six months of 2013:
February’s Cupid Chase; March’s Shamrock Shuffle; and May’s Totem-to-Totem Tune-up.
These events are meant to encourage and provide opportunities for active lifestyles for all
ages and abilities. Keep watch in local publications, bulletin boards, and online for more
information on each of these events.
Of course, what we really are now focused on is our May 25, 2013, Prince of Wales Island Marathon and Half Marathon. We have treasured the participation and sup-port of our island for the staging for this event for 13 consecutive years: We believe the 14th staging of our marathon (and 2nd staging of our half marathon) will be equally support-ed and valued. Much work remains to be done by the marathon committee with more funding to be sought in a second round of sponsorship invitations going out during the first weeks of January. Runners and Walkers Club is also selling reasonably priced raffle tick-
ets for the Get-Off-the-Rock Raffle Travel Package. The May 25 winner of this combo pack-
age will be able to fly off the island on ProMech Air and then catch an Alaska Airlines flight.
Both tickets are round trip, are good for one year from the May 25 date, and one raffle
ticket is only $5.00. Rebecca Chester came up with the wonderful idea of buying a raffle
ticket for friends and relatives far away and slipping a ticket in with a birthday card or oth-
er greeting. What better way to show them you’d really like them to visit P.O.W. Tickets
are on sale at the Chamber Office and the drawing is the evening of the Marathon Awards
Ceremony.
One last item: registration! Registration for our 14th Annual P.O.W. Island Mara-thon and Half Marathon is open. The New Year is an opportune time to set your new fit-ness goals and start working toward them. Go to www.powmarathon.org to register and for more information regarding marathon, half marathon, and relay options. Perhaps your business or organization would even like to sponsor a relay team. ISLAND-WIDE VISITORS COMMITTEE MEETING (Jeannie McFarland)
Important projects are in store for the Visitor Committee in 2013. We will begin the planning with our first meeting on Thursday, January 10th in the Conference room of the Klawock Heenya Corporation office from 11am to 2pm. The agenda will include: 1. A presentation by Mac Demmert on the proposal for a Visitors Center
in Klawock, the crossroads of the Island. 2. The Visitor Committee, as the recognized source of many of the contri-
butions to the annual Island Guide, will have the opportunity of the critical ‘first look’ at the 2013 Island Guide. This first look, coupled with each viewer’s first reactions, is an important starting point for the pro-duction of the 2014 Island Guide. What errors escaped the hours of proofreading? What new features would be valuable additions to this publication? What work can be done immediately so the “rush” is spread out? What do you really like about the 2013 that we want to continue?
3. Another important activity for the committee is planning a third bienni-al Visitor Summit in early September.
4. Other topics will include the continuation of work on the Island Wide DVD, USFS & Island wide winter activities, Ferry Transportation and Scenic Byway updates.

Prince of Wales Vocational & Technical Education Center Report
Sitework for the POW Voc Tech Center has been completed. The
location at the top and west side of Boundary Road in Klawock is ready for
the building.
The Bid Opening for the construction of the Prince of Wales Voca-
tion and Technical Education building has been temporarily suspended.
The City of Klawock secured more time to complete the project and the
committee elected to make some design changes in the mechanical por-
tion of the project.
It is intended for the bid process to be resumed for a March 2013
bid opening, and a project completion in early 2014.
