CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL We had a wonderful Cross Country Carnival at the end of Term Two. All of the students had the opportunity to show their improvement and add points to their faction! It was a beautiful morning with the weather threatening, but never raining! The faction captains were working very hard throughout the day, making sure the runners were adequately stretched and prepared for the course - some of them running a little bit extra to encourage some younger students who found the course challenging. A big thank you to all of the parent volunteers who came out to help marshal the race, as we could not have done it without you! Woolworths made another generous donation of fruit for our runners and, as they came through the finish line, many of them enjoyed a healthy snack.

While the younger years were excited to come out and show their stuff, possibly for the first time, one of the major highlights was the Year Six race. It was incredibly special to see almost all of the students and teachers out on the oval cheering on those students completing their last race at Ardross. The faction cheers were fantastic, but it was quite common to see students from all of the factions cheering each other on. Thank you to all of the teachers who helped during fitness sessions and also on the day with scoring, places and organisation.

Here are the results for the 2018 Ardross Faction Cross Country Carnival:

CELEBRATING LEARNING - ROOM 19

Term 2 was a busy term for Room 19. We learnt all about healthy cooking with Mr Crosswell and made meals from scratch using lots of different herbs and spices. We did 8 sessions of Yoga Zoo with Michelle and learnt how to use yoga poses for mindfulness and relaxation. Mr Hoyle, our School Chaplain, began the BUZZ program with us. This program helps us to think socially and foster positive relationships. We also had lots of fun planting with our Year 2 buddies. During week 8, it was our turn to host the assembly and we celebrated 50 years of BTN by doing our very own version. We are looking forward to an exciting second semester.

YEAR 4 - YORK EXCURSION

Yesterday our Year 4's boarded an early bus to travel to York to learn about its history and visit the motor museum and courthouse. They enjoyed wandering through the holding cells and acting out a scene in the courthouse, from the book 'Midnite', based on the experiences of Moondyne Joe. It was then off to Quellington Farm to plant 600 seedlings (our highest number of seedlings planted to date) in order to reduce salinity and the rising water table. After a long day, there were a few sleepy heads on the bus on the way home. It was a fabulous experience for the students and we would like to thank Mrs Treloar, Mrs Klaver, Miss Brown, Mrs Stenton, Mrs Bishop, Mrs Ellery, Mr Ivers and Mr Gentle for organising such a wonderful day.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER ‘GRATITUDE - PART 1’

Some of our staff were pleasantly ambushed last week with 'letters of gratitude' from Year 6 students. The letters were written and personally delivered and were an opportunity for the students to express various things they were grateful for and to thank the adults in the school for what they do.

Beautiful, right? So, for the next few newsletters, we're going to talk all things gratitude. And what a better way to start than to hand the microphone (or, keyboard...) to some of our Year 6 students to hear from them what it's all about. WHAT IS GRATITUDE? It's the way that you repay people for them being kind and generous to you. It makes you feel good and it makes them feel better and lets them know that what they do makes a difference.

Both people get a benefit; the person you are showing gratitude to will be thankful for the feedback and probably be more likely to do those things again in the future. HOW DO WE SHOW GRATITUDE TO PEOPLE OR FOR OUR EXPERIENCES? If someone does something for me, I try to do something for them, or at least say something nice. You could 'make a memory' about the places you are grateful for. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? You need to be grateful for the things you have. Not everyone has the same opportunities as you. It's important to acknowledge the things around you – for example the environment around us, we need to respect it and be kind to it and not use it up.

Plus, you don't need everything that you want – you can live a simple and happy life. Things don't need to be big or fancy or expensive, they won't make you happy. And that can get in the way of gratitude and stop you from appreciating the things you already have.

A 'want' and a 'need' are two different things; what you need is something that you can't live without, but what you 'want' might not be essential. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS GRATEFUL FOR? Friends, family, pets, our environment, the safe society we live in. We should be grateful for going to school; even the bits of school that we don't absolutely love. (Thanks BJ, Zeik and Amelia for your insights.)

A great way to start making space for gratitude is having a brief family moment to list one or two things you're each grateful for from each day. It might be as simple as your favourite sandwich for lunch (cheese and vegemite!) or a sunny patch at recess for some oval time. But ... more on this next newsletter. And for a great read, try 'The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of Riley' by Colin Thompson.

INSPIRATIONAL TEACHER I stood at the finish line with lots of other parents, teachers and students to cheer on the runners as they crossed the finish line. My day turned from fantastic to incredible when we all spotted Mr Hill, running with a student who needed that extra bit of encouragement to finish the race. Without fuss or attention he ran and inspired us all. Well done Mr Hill we are so lucky to have you at our school.
