LAWRENCE AREA SCHOOLCommunity Newsletter 22nd August 2013No 11Last Friday I was in Wellington attending a meeting when at 2.32 the earthquakecentred at Seddon shook the capital. After shocks came regularly; some quite intense. There was none or little panic, as the media tried to portray. Buildings were closed, thousands of workers were sent home, grid lock was a reality BUT people remainedremarkably calm.

It did however create instance empathy with the people of Christchurch who havefaced situations like these and worse. The message for our students is to take sensibleaction - UNDER (desk) HOLD (desk leg) COVER (head) and await for further instructions.

At school in an earthquake we wait for the shaking to end, and then proceed to a safe

outdoor assembly area and check that everyone is accounted for. Depending on theseverity of events next steps will vary:

A mild event - reassure students and continue with school dayA moderate event - supports students, contact parents and have them collect theirchildrenA major event - assist the injured, support pupils and be directed by civil defence

We are at present the shaky-isles so being prepared is wise.

Ellen McCraw - Spirit of AdventureRecently Yr 12 student Ellen McCraw vogaged on the Spirit of New Zealand.

    This is her report.

On the 26th of June 2013 I flew to Auckland for the first time to go on the Spirit of New

Zealand. We sailed out of Waitemata Harbour and headed up the Great Barrier Island.

Every morning at 6.45am we had to get up and go for a swim in the freezing cold sea. It was

    a good wake up though.

I accomplished so many things I thought I would never do whilst on spirit:

I climbed to the top of the mastWent out on the yards

    Got to stair the ship

Became a leader for STBD B

    It was great fun.

We had such good weather for most days, except for day seven, where the sea was very

rough and I almost go sea sick. I saw such beautiful scenery on Spirit; nice beaches, green

cliffs, little island everywhere and we saw dolphins almost every day!

The highlight of my trip would have to be meeting so many awesome people, it was wicked.

Spirit was such an amazing experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has the

    opportunity to apply. Ellen McCraw.

This annual event is eagerly looked forward to for a variety of compelling reasons:- it involves the whole school- it combines both Lawrence Area School and Waitahuna- it is based on both competition and achieving goals- it brings out the best in students- it is based at Gabriels Gully, our link to past history- it is a real challenge regardless of age

This years event lived up to all expectations. Unseasonably mild weather, a big crowd, brilliant races and students all keen to dotheir best, tracks in great order. Congratulations to winners and those who achieved personal goals. Thank you to seniorstudents who supported the Junior events. Thanks to staff for their excellent work and organisation. Thanks to our bus driversfor helping out with transport. Thank to the many supporters.

It was a privilege to be asked to judge the finals of this competition. It did make me realise and

appreciate the many hours of work involved in speeches. All students in Yrs 3-Yr 8

researched, wrote, refined, practiced and delivered speeches in class. Our youngest studentsfocussed on poetry. From these class events finalists were selected. Speeches were refined,

improved. I am sure many rehearsals also took place, with support from home and school. The finalists were all wonderful. Their research and understanding of their topic was evident.

Their courage, their confidence in delivering their speech to a large and appreciative

audience was outstanding. Topics were varied and most interesting. Approaches were novel, inspiring and thought provoking. We congratulate all that took part and would like to

recognise and acknowledge class winners and overall speech champions. To the very large

crowd of parents, grandparents, and friends in attendance thank you.Overall Speech Champions
