The issue of providing traumatised children with counselling was also canvassed. Earlier this week it came to my attention that a number of parents were of the opinion, ‗via the grapevine‘, that a vehicle involved in the accident had been flung or careered into our school grounds. Firstly, as a rule of thumb, I do not report in our newsletter on road accidents in our neighbourhood which have no direct bearing on our school. Put more bluntly, we are not an accident reporting agency! If we were, I would be reporting to you on more than a few times a year on accidents that occur in our precinct. However, to the best of my knowledge, no one we know was involved, nor was our school involved in any particular way, whatsoever, other than the accident happened in a street or on the highway and we heard and possibly saw, emergency vehicles in attendance. Insofar as last week‘s accident was concerned, all we know is that some teachers and students heard a loud bang on the freeway, a white car collided with the sound barrier and dislodged two panels, with the car slightly protruding through a gap in the sound barrier. We heard a number of emergency vehicles sirens sounding and the noise of a helicopter in the vicinity. That was it! The sound barriers blocked our vision of the accident, bar the appearance of a small part of the front or rear of the white car that dislodged the sound barrier panel. As the accident happened close to the end of lunchtime, the children came inside shortly after the accident occurred. Also, it had been raining earlier; the grounds were wet with the result being that our children weren‘t even playing anywhere near our school boundary fence adjacent to the freeway sound barrier location of the accident. We were not contacted by any emergency workers or police who attended the accident, nor did we see any reports on the accident in the nightly TV news broadcasts. On that basis, I couldn‘t see any productive reason for bringing notice of the accident to your attention. Insofar as providing students with counselling services, in the circumstances, I did not feel this was warranted, nor worth canvassing with the children as to whether it was. From my experience, there are times when bringing people‘s attention to matters creates the very anxiety and worry that you are trying to avoid or minimise in the first place. I guess, in the future, a good starting point might be ―If our school isn‘t reporting an accident then it didn‘t involve our school in any significant way and that‘s great!‖ ECHOES FROM OUR FIRST TWENTY YEARS One of the more jovial and nonsensical discussions we have had at school council was back in the early days of 1990. I was being baited by several Essendon supporters on school council who delighted in reminding me that the housing estate in which Berwick Lodge P.S. was located had all the streets named after the players and officials of the premiership Essendon teams of 1984 -1985. In retaliation I moved a motion that we name our school car park The Lou Richards Car Park in honour of that legendary Collingwood player and media personality. The motion failed to attract a seconder, but it was fun raising it in the Berwick heartland of Essendon! I think we won the flag in that year. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q.
