From the Principal continued...

St Aloysius College

This has been a busy fortnight for the Music faculty and students, preparing for Music Camp, Open Day and learning their new repertoire for the year. At both Primary and Whole School assemblies, our music ensembles add life and warmth to our celebrations. A small group of singers worked with clients and staff from Catherine House (a supported accommodation service for women experiencing homelessness) to rehearse and perform songs for International Women’s Day. These opportunities to connect with some of the organisations we support through our fundraising give students valuable insights into the needs of our community.

The theme for this year’s Swimming Carnival was “When I Grow Up” and captured the imaginations of students from Years 3 to 12. Dressed in house colours, their costumes indicated the diverse range of pathways they hope to pursue beyond school. Our senior students were great role models, with high levels of energy and participation in competitive and novelty events. Congratulations to St Clare’s who were winners on the day and also won the house spirit award. Thanks to Ms Nicole Wedding, the House Captains and all the staff and students who made the day such a success.

The speaker at this year’s International Women’s Day Breakfast today was Tanya Hosch, an Australian social activist. She is a Torres Strait Islander woman who lives in Adelaide, and is the Joint Campaign Director for RECOGNISE. Given the concern about the lack of progress towards closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians, Tanya’s words were a timely reminder of how important this issue is for our country. This year, the Justice and Mercy group organised some new activities to mark International Women’s Day, including sharing stories of inspirational women in our society and holding a cake stall to raise funds for services that support women in need.

Wishing all our students and their families a happy International Women’s Day!

WASTE FREE WEDNESDAYS!After the success of NUDE FOOD DAY in 2017, in 2018 we have started WASTE FREE WEDNESDAYS. This will happen each WEDNESDAY from now on!

This is an opportunity for us to continue the great work we started last year, with our ‘Waste free lunch and recess challenge’.

This healthy ‘zero waste lunch day’ encourages us to reduce the amount of waste we produce. Our first ‘Waste Free Wednesday’ was Wednesday 28 February. Let’s keep up the good work!

Primary students working hard to wipe out waste!

Should Every School Have Waste Free Wednesday?Your school must be a part of WFW. It’s extremely healthy, people save a huge amount of money and it will encourage others to help this planet. WFW will make an incredibly big impact on turning this world’s huge dump of litter into a much prettier and environmentally friendly place. Schools that participate in WFW make positive changes to the world’s rubbish. Wouldn’t you want your children going to an educational, clean, waste free school?

To begin with, WFW is about healthy eating. WFW will effect schools health splendidly. Classes won’t be able to bring packaged foods such as chips and popcorn. By reducing waste, this will force students to bring healthier alternatives. People can also bring nude food; this means foods with its own package, such as apples, bananas and pears. Packaged foods forces unhealthy eating habits. I always bring containers and I have healthier eating habits.

Secondly, people will save lots of money. They could spend that money on much more important things. Also every now and again people could take a holiday. Remember when you buy packaged foods, you pay for the package. With packaging you don’t save one cent of your money you’re just spending and spending! Wouldn’t you rather have a nice holiday than spending heaps of money and ruin the planet?

Lastly, WFW in schools will encourage others to follow this initiative. This will help the war on coffee cups. By encouraging others to become waste free it will make work places and life

cleaner places. Just by reusing, reducing and recycling, we can help everyone realise that you have to do your part in the war against waste. If no one did their part, this world would be disgusting. Did you know most landfill takes thousands of years to break down?

In conclusion, all schools should definitely have WFW. It will improve health spectacularly, it will save people loads of money and will encourage others to join in. This will help litter problems. It is bogus to think WFW isn’t a good idea. So stop buying wrappers and use containers, today! By Georgia Elborough 5JA

SECONDARY SPORT

We are now three rounds into the Summer Secondary Sport season with only two more rounds and finals to play. The girls have had some great success with a number of our teams sitting in first or second place on their premiership tables and looking good for finals.

In week 4, we had a team of 18 Years 7-12 students compete in the Schools Triathlon Championships at West Lakes Canoe Club. There were plenty of nerves on the starting line with many of our girls brand new to the sport. There was no need for nerves, as all of the girls had been well prepared by Ms Zoe Duffy in some tough Triathlon specific training sessions in the lead up to the event. This saw our team come away with some great results. The girls had the option of competing in a Come ‘n’ Try individual event, which varied in length depending on age group, as a way of introducing them to Triathlon. Congratulations to Meredith Norman (12LF) who won the Senior Girls Come ‘n’ Try race and to Prudence Beaumont who finished 5th in her Junior Come ‘n’ Try race. Many of our students competed in the team event, which involved three athletes each completing one leg of the Triathlon. Congratulations to one of our Senior Girls’ teams who took out first place in their team event and our Year 7 team who also won the Year 7 team race. All other teams finished in the top 10, which is a great result.A special mention to Pia Marschall (8MB) who was the only student to compete in her State Trial race. After finishing 4th, she has been selected to compete in the State Triathlon team! We wish Pia all the best with her training and future races. Thank you to coach Ms Zoe Duffy and official Gretel Oliver for their assistance both on the day and in the lead up to the event. We look forward to seeing the girls compete again in the future.

GYMNASTICSThe Reception and Year 1 students have been learning gymnastics in their Physical Education lessons this term. The classes have engaged enthusiastically in a variety of physical skills: rocking, rolling, jumping and balancing with and without equipment. Using different gymnastics apparatus, the girls have challenged themselves to control their body movements individually and when working with a partner or in small groups. The students have demonstrated increased confidence and body awareness on the mini-trampoline, low and high bars, off boxes and on the floor mats. It has been pleasing to see the girls’ gymnastics skill levels develop over the past five weeks.

Exciting & Creative

As part of a school-wide re-branding initiative, 15 girls across Years 8 to 12 have been working on an exciting new Art project: to design and create a giant mural promoting SAC. In workshops throughout the year, we will be designing, planning and eventually executing the painting of a series of murals representing the College, with help from Mr David Riggs, a professional marketing consultant. In the two workshops we have had so far, the team has been talking about thinking differently, making an impact, as well as brainstorming some ideas for themes. We are all very excited to be part of this huge project and ready to create an incredible mural that truly shows just what St Aloysius girls are capable of doing.Jasmine Dallimore, on behalf of the SAC Branding Mural Team

YEAR 8 CAMP

This week the Drama, Science and English faculties invited talented Fringe Festival performer John Hinton to the SAC Drama theatre to present his show ‘The Origins of the Species’ based on the life of world famous scientist, Charles Darwin. Mr Hinton sang, danced and acted his way through an hour of comedy and history with a good dash of science and biography thrown in. He thoroughly entertained our Year 9 students. All of Mr Hinton’s shows are showing at Holden St Theatre and if you are interested you can see him playing Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein or Madam Curie!Tickets are available through fringeTix.

CARITAS AUSTRALIA JUST LEADERSHIP DAY

Caritas Australia is a Catholic organisation that assists communities in 36 countries in Asia, Africa and Australia by providing basic needs and skills to improve lives. Project Compassion is one part of Caritas Australia. During Lent, we are asked to give to others and one way of doing this is to support the works of Project Compassion by donating money that will be used to assist many communities.

One of the projects Year 6 JAM leaders discussed at the Just Leadership Day was how to raise awareness of the necessity of having clean water, essential for the health of children. We have decided to have an awareness and fundraising day on Tuesday of Week 7 in the Dunlevie Courtyard at lunchtime. Primary students are asked to bring silver or gold coins to fill in a class water drop. All money will go to Project Compassion.

Students’ Reflections

On Wednesday 21 February, JAM (Justice & Mercy) leaders from lots of different schools came together and talked about Caritas Australia. Suzy from Caritas talked to us and shared lots of sad and happy information about people that Caritas has helped. We got into groups of three, with people from other schools and discussed some questions and issues. Our guest speaker, Fr George who is the Head of Caritas Australia came to talk to us about his youth in Sri Lanka. This experience was really interesting and fun.Alicia Rudko RL (Year 6 Primary JAM leader)When I went to Caritas Australia- Just leadership Day, I learnt lots of inspiring things that I didn’t know about that were happening around the world. Caritas works in many countries. One activity involved a beachball and as Suzy said a word such as Caritas she threw the ball to someone and they had to say a word related to Caritas. I had fun meeting other students from other schools and working as a team with my own school to create new ideas. Mia Young TN (Year 7 Primary JAM leader)
