Headteacher’s update
Dear Parents/Carers,
We began our week with a superb whole school assembly, led by 4B, about the Jewish
festival Yom Kippur. They described, through drama and readings, how during the ‘Day of
Atonement’ Jewish people are called to say sorry for the things that they have done wrong
through prayer. We all thought carefully about how, if we make a wrong choice, we can show
that we are sorry through our words and actions.
Classes in year 1-4 have also been busy electing their School Council Representatives and we
were delighted to meet our new school council members on Monday lunchtime. This is a very
important role as our School Council provide valuable ideas and feedback about how we can
make our school even better. Over previous years they have been involved in school
improvement projects, including the outdoor learning space, which is being created over the
coming months, and creating a pupils’ guide to ‘Being a Good Friend’. We are really looking
forward to working with them this year!
We warmly welcomed our new school chaplain, Fr Jason, into school on Tuesday morning as
he celebrated his first Mass with us. Fr Jason is keen to come in and work with the children
and will be leading our yr 4 altar server training later this half term.
Yr 1 had a brilliant time on Wednesday as they visited Avoncroft Museum, as part of their
‘Three Little Pigs’ topic. They had great fun designing and building houses made of straw,
sticks and bricks as well as exploring buildings made out of lots of different materials.
On Tuesday 9th October we will be holding our Harvest Mass (yr3 and yr4) followed by our
Harvest Service (Reception, yr1 and yr2). We would welcome donations of the following:
Yr 4—biscuits & cakes
Yr 3—packets & tins
Yr 2—fruit & veg
Yr 1—packets & tins
Reception—fruit & veg
Can donations please be brought in on Monday 8th October. These will be distributed to elder-
ly members of our local community.
Enjoy your weekend!

Dear Parents/Carers,
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic First School has been ably supported over the years by a
dedicated group of Academy Representatives (formerly known as Governors). We are looking for
new Academy Representatives to join and support the Headteacher, staff and pupils in continuing
to achieve and improve the good education here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The School Academy Body requires a variety of people, including those who may have experience
in Education, Health and Safety, Accountancy, Commerce or Governance, although this is not a
prerequisite.
We currently have vacancies for two Foundation Academy Representatives. As a Catholic school,
with Christ at the Centre, Foundation Academy Representatives must be practising Catholics. We
are also looking to recruit one Parent Academy Representative. There is no requirement for
Parent Representatives to be of the Catholic faith.
Academy Representatives attend meetings, usually held in school in the evenings, termly, during
term time, to provide support and challenge in all key areas of school development. Training
courses, including a planned induction, are provided by the Diocese and outside agencies to help
the Representatives in their role. Our Lady of Mount Carmel also provides Academy
Representatives with access to online training.
The Safeguarding Policies of Our Lady of Lourdes MAC, Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the
Arch-Diocese of Birmingham require Academy Representatives to hold an enhanced DBS check
which will be undertaken by the school.
If you would like to know more about the role or you would like to nominate yourself/another per-
son (with their permission), please contact me via [email protected]
In order to ensure a fair process, all expressions of interest must be made by 12 noon on Monday
15th October 2018.
Yours sincerely
Mrs Jane Kembery
Chair of the Academy Representatives
