Congratulations on Awards
We welcomed parents, guardians and some grandparents today as we congratulated students receiving Principal’s Awards. Awards were made for Academic Merit for students who achieved all ‘A’ levels or ‘A’ levels with only 1 ‘B’ level. Awards were also made for Excellence in Academic Effort and Conduct for students who achieved all ‘A’ levels for Effort or ‘A’ levels with only 1 ‘B’ level.
Perhaps a move to firmer expectations was reflected in the number of Merit Awards and Excellence in Effort and Conduct Awards. Greater weight has been given to higher order thinking, complex reasoning and problem solving. Further, the introduction of a five point scale for Effort has made attaining an ‘A’ level for Effort just that much harder. Students must work consistently well with a high quality effort to achieve highly on NAPLAN, the QCS Test and in their Senior subjects. The Principal’s Awards aim to promote the high quality effort that is necessary for Academic Achievement.

Holistic Catholic Education
While we are increasing our expectations of learners, we are also mindful of parent feedback that regards Marymount as the best school on the Gold Coast. The Principal’s Awards point to our academic priority. Our other priorities include developing music, dance, performing art, visual art, athletic and sporting abilities. Together, with our academic expectations, the demands we place on students across these other areas produces achievement and quality effort.
The experience of the endeavour across all areas and of our challenge and encouragement along the way, develops caring and cooperation, confidence and courage, responsibility and respect, honesty and faithfulness, purpose and pride, doing your best and excellence, determination and will power, trustworthiness and friendliness. Some students struggle with this and we look to parents, guardians and
grandparents to support as we endeavour to help these young people.
The Peace Prayer we say summarises these virtues and values as love, forgiveness (pardon), faith, hope and joy, to console, to understand, to love and to give. It challenges us to Catholic pastoral care and respect for each other that is the glue that binds our community and that shapes the character of our graduates.
ANZAC DAY
Our students will commemorate ANZAC day and remember those who served Australia in war, who gave their lives, who were injured and whose families suffered. There will be activity at the College and students will attend the Dawn Service (4:15am) and the ANZAC Parade (9:15am) in Burleigh Heads.

Parent Teacher Interviews
The Parent/Teacher interviews are a significant part of the process in assisting all students achieve their best. We are grateful for how many parents and carers made the effort to attend these this week and continue in the partnership we have between school and home.
Principal’s Awards
There are the very many deserving students who were acknowledged at the Principal's Awards this Friday. Congratulations to those awardees. My thanks to our Curriculum Captains, Abby and Norbert, who were the masters of Ceremony for the event.
Subject Changes
As we are in the middle of the semester, it is not possible to alter subject choices. All Senior subjects are offered for a full semester, and
completion of the full course is required in order to apply semester's credit.
Year 12 QCS Preparation
The Year 12 QCS program continues in earnest each Thursday and attendance is essential. Students are learning the test skills associated with the variety of test instruments used in the tests so as to increase their performance chances, regardless of the unit topic they will face on the day. Our approach to whole school pedagogy is focusing on the skills of writing, including punctuation and grammar. These are essential elements of good writing in the QCS test alone and all students, not just those in the junior school will benefit from the approach under review by our teaching staff

Year 9 Mass
All students of Year 9 attended their Year Mass for 2016 on Thursday morning. This was an intimate celebration for the group and their reverence and participation was commendable.
We look forward to next year’s Mass being celebrated in the new Mary the Mother of Mercy Church up the hill! Thank you to Father Stephen Camiolo for presiding at the Mass.
Rosies Friends on the Street
Three Year 12 students were “on the street’ on Tuesday evening with Rosies. We are always particularly proud of our long standing association with Rosies and of our students who do this.
Year 11 Mass
The Year 11s will have their Mass on Thursday, 12 May and preparation has already begun. As Year 11 students of Religion and Ethics are currently studying a unit on Spirituality, which includes ritual, an opportunity is presented to study the Mass as a ritual. Part of their assessment task will relate directly to this.
ANZAC
The College will celebrate ANZAC on Tuesday 26 April commencing at 9:30am in the P&F Courtyard. A number of students who are in the Cadets have been very passionately rehearsing their drills in anticipation of Tuesday’s service. We wish them well over the weekend knowing how busy they will be.
One of our boys has the honour of lowering and raising the flags at the Currumbin Dawn Service which will be broadcast internationally.
Dolores MaitlandAssistant Principal Religious Education
Thank you to Father Stephen Camiolo for presiding at the Mass
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

on the second day back at school after a much needed break we jumped straight into robot programing with Damien Kee, who works with students and teachers from around the world, bringing the effective use of technology to the classroom.
With the help of Damien, we constructed robots out of Lego using the Lego Mindstorm product. We used computers with the Mindstorm programming software on them, to program the robots to do everything or anything we wanted them to do. The lesson went on for the whole day and involved programming the robots to defeat obstacles and challenges set by Damien. My favourite challenge was when we had to over come an obstacle course; now the robots don’t just go own their own, so we had to set instructions for the robots to follow. We were also able to turn our group’s robot into a self aware “pet” with sensors to detect where objects were and move away from them!
It was such a fun day and I would do it again for sure. It is a subject I am really fond of and I can’t wait for the robot dance completion at the end of this term! Thanks so much Damien for the day!

Host Families required
Have you accessed the Parent Portal? Update your details, view student absences, timetables, and reports.
This is a worthwhile opportunity for your family to learn about Japanese culture, while sharing with your Japanese student the lifestyle of an Australian family.
• Families are asked to provide all meals and a friendly home for their student
• They will travel to and from school each day the same way as arranged for your own children (please provide transportation fee)
• Payment of $400 to host families will be paid to assist with some of the expenses involved when hosting your student
• If you are hosting another Japanese student during Yuhigaoka High School’s stay, please refrain from becoming a host family for Yuhigaoka High School students.
Yes, I would like to host a Japanese student, but…
Will the student speak any English?
Yes. However, as their English skills may be limited, we would ask that you speak clearly and slowly (but not in a patronising way) when communicating with them.
Will I have to cook Japanese food for the student?
No. Your Japanese student is here to experience an Australian lifestyle. This includes spending mealtimes with your family, and eating what you and your family normally eat.
Is it oK if the parent/s work fulltime?
Yes. During these times (e.g. after school), your Japanese student can spend time with your own children. Families who live near each other are encouraged to share transport, or other activities outside of school.
Do we need blue Cards?
Yes. If your family hosts an overseas student for 10 or more days, it is necessary for all family members over the age of 18 to have a current Blue Card. Please contact the school office to obtain blue card application form.
If you would like to host a Japanese student this year, please contact:
Kanae Aki Languages Coordinator [email protected] to obtain a Host Family Application Form or access on Parent Portal via this link
Please contact Yoko if you need information about this program.

Principal’s Awards
A return from the Easter break sees our seniors enter another big term. The Parent Teacher interviews, held on Monday, were a chance to review the students’ results, but more importantly their work ethic.
The support of parents and caregivers is crucial throughout a student’s senior year and the attendance of so many parents at these important interviews was very much appreciated.
On Friday at the Principal’s Awards, we congratulated and rewarded those students who exhibited exemplary effort and conduct throughout Term 1. Special awards were also presented to Abigail Joseph, Tom Morey and Joel Marriott for Academic Merit. To maintain such a high standard of academic performance in their final year is a testament to these students’ commitment and dedication to their studies and they should feel as proud of themselves as we are of them.
Final Terms of Schooling
The challenge for all of the seniors is to determine what their priorities are. Recognising that they have two and a half terms left before they graduate should motivate them to direct as much of their energy as possible into their studies in order to give themselves the best chance of success. Time management remains a crucial factor in academic success and the support of parents and caregivers is vital to this. Again, continued support for your student is appreciated.
College Ambassadors
Our seniors remain ambassadors for the College and as such, they need to ensure their conduct, attendance and appearance is of the highest quality. Students must continue to wear the uniform correctly and with pride. They should also minimise the time they are absent from school and be committed to catching up on missed work if their absence is unavoidable.
College Leaders
Our leaders continue to fulfil their roles with impressive enthusiasm and commitment. Discussions held at their fortnightly meetings revolve around ideas designed to improve the life of the College and they remain excited to have a positive impact on the College as a whole.
Peer Support
Next week sees a number of Year 12 students, including our leaders, providing assistance and support to our Year 7 students by joining them on their Camp. The opportunity to spend time with our junior students and form a relationship with them is extremely valuable to the overall culture of the College. It is hard to say whether the Year 12s or the Year 7s are more excited about the time they will spend together but no doubt the photos that will appear in the Newsletter will tell the story.
Year 12 Formal
Whilst this term is the longest of the year, for Year 12 students it will culminate with their Formal at The Marriott. This exciting event requires plenty of preparation and organisation and details will be outlined in the Newsletter throughout the term. Invitations will be sent out to the students in coming weeks. At this stage it is important to know that the arrival time on the night for the students is strictly between 5:30pm and 6:30pm. As students organise their own transport to the Formal they need to bear this in mind.
As always, if there are any queries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with either Mr Carroll or Mrs Scott.

CALLING ALL YouNG MATHEMATICIANS!!• Are you good at Maths?
• Do you want to challenge yourself?
• Do you want to extend your problem solving skills?
• Do you want to compete against other budding Mathematicians on the Gold Coast and Australia?
Next term, we will be launching a new club for Year 7 & 8 Mathematics students. The aim of the club is to challenge members to extend their mathematical problem-solving skills and prepare them to compete in local and Australia-wide Mathematics competitions. The club has the goals of fostering individual growth, mathematical mastery, and teamwork.
While our primary focus is mathematics, our aim in the future is to incorporate other activities that fall under the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) banner.
Students have been asked to register their interest with Mr Spilsted, Mrs Dixon or their Mathematics teacher. Teachers have also been asked to nominate students in their Years 7 & 8 classes who they feel would benefit from being part of the club.
Invitations to the club will be given out early next term.
Have a great Easter Holiday and stay tuned for more information.

Business week

Year 10 business classes were engaged in the competitive activity of a business Week during the last week of term one.
During this week, students are placed into teams. Each team was responsible for choosing their product and company name and then preparing all the entries for the competition. Each group is mentored by one of the teaching staff. The entries the teams were judged on were:
• Best teamwork• Best CEO• Best logo and slogan (branding)• Best Venture pitch• Best Website• Best Infomercial (commercial)• Best Business Proposal (Plan)• Best Trade display (judges’ choice)• Best Trade display (people’s choice)• Overall best team
The students quickly became very engaged in their competition and learned many new skills. The buzz from each of the groups was gratifying. This practical activity provides the students with a greater understanding of business as they make all the management decisions necessary for the successful operation of their business.
Congratulations to the successful teams and team members listed on the following page.
A big thank you to all the students who were so enthusiastic and actively participated in their teams competition entries. You are a credit to the school and to your parents.
