Marymount Tours for Prospective Students
This Monday we welcome prospective families as they visit to learn what Marymount College has to offer their sons and daughters for Year 7 and Year 8 in 2015. We anticipate an enrolment of a maximum of 240 Year 7 students and 180 Year 8 students in 2015. Already, many enrolments (over 300) have been finalised for 2015.
2015 Enrolment Interviews for Year 7 & 8 - Mon 17 March and Tues 18 March
With so many enrolments for 2015 finalised it is likely that Year 7 enrolment applications will go on to a waiting list following the March 17 & 18 enrolment interviews for 2015. Enrolments for Year 8 may approach our limit of 180 at this time and we will keep families informed. To avoid disappointment, please complete and lodge enrolment applications now. It is most unlikely that 2015 places will be available following the May 19 & 20 Enrolment interviews. Indeed, we already have confirmed 2016 enrolments.
Strong Representation – Lions Youth of the Year
Congratulations to our outstanding representatives in the Lions Youth of the Year Competition. Following judging at club level of their applications, interviews and public speaking performances, Maddie Dick has been selected to represent Carrara Lions Club and Nikara Rangesh has been selected to represent the Burleigh Lions Club. Caitlin O’Connor won the Public Speaking Award at the Robina Lions Club judging.
Maddie and Nikara go on to Zone Finals on 8 March. If successful, they will go on to compete against each other and two other entrants in the Regional Finals on 15 March. We wish them well in their challenging quest.
Out of the Box – Year 8 Laptop Roll out
Our appreciation to all staff involved in the roll out of Macbook Air Laptops to 235 Year 8 students on Thursday this week. It’s an exciting day for students that demands careful planning and precise instruction and patient support by staff. We look forward to the arrival of Year 7 & 8 in 2015 and the roll out of over 400 laptop computers to these young people as they begin their high school years.
Oceanic District Champions
Congratulations to our Swimming Team and Captains Shane Carroll and Laura Dolan on winning the Oceanic Distrct Championships for the 13th year running. While the success is a story of team commitment and consistent placing in both A and B division events, Jemma Smith (14 Yrs), Claudia Rose Slaven (15 yrs), Megan Kreuter (16 yrs) and Daniel Elliott-Serafin (16 yrs) are to be congratulated for winning their Age Championships. Our appreciation to Mr Klouzal who managed and motivated the team with his steady support prior to the Carnival and on the day.

Snapshots of new building site inspection this week
Block 7 – So Near Yet So Far
It is a case of watching longingly for access to new classrooms, as the new building has emerged from behind scaffolding. With the hot days of this past week and ailing air-conditioning in L Block, resilience and patience have been tested. The snapshots from this week’s site inspection give some sense of the internal spaces and colour. With internal work moving at a healthy pace over the past two weeks attention has moved to external works at the rear. A finish date has not yet been determined.

Early Departures
During the school week, students need to be in class learning. Occasionally in circumstances where it is unavoidable, parents may need to collect their child for an appointment or family reason.
In this instance, the College policy is as follows;
- Bring a letter from your parent/guardian explaining why you need to leave early - Have your Pastoral Teacher and Pastoral Coordinator sign the letter during Pastoral Care period
- Immediately prior to departure report to SAO. Hand in your note and complete the early departure register.
Where situations arise that necessitate collecting your child without prior written knowledge, please phone the College and we will locate your child. As this disrupts the classroom learning, it is preferable to avoid this if possible. During sport on Thursday afternoons, when students may be away from the College or on the fields, this may not be possible.
Please note that parents should always meet their child in the Student Administration Office (SAO). We cannot allow students to meet in the carpark or other unsupervised areas.

aSSISTaNT PRINCIPaL aDMINISTRaTION SENIOR CuRRICuLuMYear 12 Information Evening
Thanks to the many parents and students who attended the Senior School Information evening last Monday. The presentation from the Principal, The VET Coordinator and myself outlined many important points about students successfully undertaking post compulsory education and making a successful transition into tertiary pathways. A copy of the Power Point presentation is available on the College website. The importance of formalities for Senior assessment cannot be understated.
QCS Practice
The Core Skills Test Program for Year 12 OP eligible students continues each fortnight. The OP eligible students are running through a series of knowledge, skills, practice, revision and feedback on this most important external testing. Non – OP eligible students who choose not to take part have a study lesson that and period must return the letter mailed home recently to absent themselves from the program. Still very few of these have been returned to date.
assessment Calendars
Do you know where your child’s Assessment Calendars for the Semester are placed? These are valuable planning documents and by now they should be located in a prominent position. Copies of these are also available on the College website. Exam Block commences in Week 8 of this term.
Predictions
This week I have been targeting Year 12 students at risk of not achieving a QCE by the end of the year, due to poor performances in Year 11 Semester results. A letter will be mailed home directly to these families. We have also commenced informing Year 12 students of a likely OP prediction, based on the calculation process operated by the QSA; but using the ‘false’ data of their current results – specifically Year 11 Semester II. While usually accurate, it cannot not be deemed a full or real prediction, however. Students need to see me, or Mr Murtagh individually to receive this information.
Peter Shaw - assistant Principal administration Senior Curriculum
You may have noticed that the Year 8 students are very excited as they now have their Laptops ready to use. Yesterday's Out of the Box went very well and the only students who are yet to receive their laptops are our District Swimmers who are receiving them this morning.
A big thank you to Mr Tim O'Shea and Mrs Kathy McDonald, Mrs Maryanne Angel, Mrs Dawn Sajn and Mr Patrick Fedorczyk for setting up PowerPoints, passwords and the smooth distribution of laptops. And for the implementation of the roll-out I must thank Mrs Kristina Baker, Mr Peter Raward, Mrs Lorena Vine, Mr Kyle Connor, Mrs Jacqui Sheehan, Mrs Janet Cartlidge and Ms Marie Hansen. Also to the Learning Support team who helped a number of students with the set up of their machines.
Well done everyone.

Be a Parent not a Pal
It’s challenging being a parent.
More so when the teenager is a challenge. Even more so when as a parent we’re struggling for time and support.
• How do we find out how to parent?
• How do we evaluate what we currently do as parents?
• Is it possible to do parenting more effectively?
If these questions have been yours then consider attending Dr Jeff Kemp’s Parenting Skills Evenings at St Michael’s College Carrara 7pm Wednesdays 12, 19 & 26 March.

Peace Prayer of St. Francis of assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; when there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand, to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Year 12 Retreat
Year 12 Retreat which takes place from 5- 7 March will be organised a little differently this year. Students will be grouped in their Pastoral Care groups and there will be two groups at each venue. It is hoped that this time shared with their Pastoral Teachers and Pastoral group members will add not only to their retreat experience, but should also enrich relationships as the year goes on. It is sad, but true, that some students can go right through school from primary to secondary, and never get to know some of the students with whom they have shared the journey.
Preparations are quite advanced, yet a large number of letters are yet to be returned. If yours is one of them, please send it in to the College as soon as possible. Letter explaining what is required here.
As Retreat begins on Ash Wednesday, Year 12s will attend the College Ash Wednesday Liturgy before leaving.
Year 10 Reflection Day
Year 10 Reflection Day will be held on 5 March at Bond University. Students will bring a letter home with details next week. Mr Michael Fitzpatrick will facilitate the day. Year 10s will receive their ashes during their Reflection Day ritual.
Junior Classes
Years 8, 9 and 10 Religion classes are very busily engaged in their new Religion program. You are encouraged to have conversations with your sons and daughters about their work. Work on assessment tasks will begin imminently providing another opportunity for good conversations at home.

210 roses and 310 cupcakes were sold for Valentine’s Day and over $835 was raised.
Valentine’s Day, the day of love, originates from the story of Saint Valentine in Rome in 300 AD. Valentine was a Christian Priest who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and ministering Christians who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. He is said to have performed a miracle in order to cure the jailer’s daughter of blindness. He was beheaded for this on February 14, leaving a letter to the daughter and signing it, “From Your Valentine”.
Valentine’s Day at Marymount was filled with joy, love and friendship. During the week students had the option to preorder their loved ones roses and cupcakes, which were distributed to pastoral classes on Friday morning. More than fifty Year 12s dressed up as cupid in pink, red and white togas to deliver the gifts. Year 12 participant, Nikara Rangesh, expressed, “It was great fun to dress up and be involved, all the while spreading the love.”
Much organisation went into the day, from the lead-in time – pre-ordering the gifts to obtaining and sorting the orders, wrapping the roses, and then successfully distribute them together with cupcakes. The effective teamwork directed by Campus Minister Eliza Kerklaan, helped this process run smoothly and effectively.
210 roses and 310 cupcakes were sold for Valentine’s Day, meaning that over $835 was raised. This money will be presented to Project Compassion, which is Caritas Australia’s annual fundraising and awareness raising appeal to ‘help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity’. Specifically, this year the money will go to a city slum in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to improve living conditions.
Valentine’s Day at Marymount was certainly memorable, and it is rewarding to know that our gestures of love are helping out those that are less fortunate.

On Valentines Day, senior art students were given the opportunity to visit the Gallery of Modern Art in Southbank. The current exhibition displayed is ‘Falling Back to Earth’ by artist Cai Guo-Qiang, whose large-scale installations have made him one of the most innovative figures in contemporary art.
The exhibition features four installations, including two newly commissioned works, directly inspired by the landscapes of southeast Queensland, which Guo-Qiang visited in 2011.
‘Heritage’ 2013 showcases 99 replicas of animals from around the world, all drinking from a blue lake, surrounded by pristine white sand, similar to the lakes of Moreton Bay’s islands.
‘Eucalyptus’ 2013 responds to the ancient trees of Lamington National Park in our very own Gold Coast hinterland.
The third installation ‘Head On’, of 99 wolves leaping above head only to crash against a pane of glass, is most definitely striking, with a narrative dimension that implies themes of ideology and human nature.
The final installation is a peaceful tea drinking room, which invites guests to share in Guo-Qiang’s culture.
Each of these installations gave the Marymount Art senior students a chance to reflect upon the work they will choose to produce in the classroom within the year ahead.
“I was completely awe struck at the grand assemblage of all four installations,” commented year 12 art student, Loretta Serong. “’Falling Back to Earth’ has definitely helped me in my own growth as an artist, in finding meaning and seeing different perspectives of bodies of work”.
Inspired by Guo-Qiang’s spectacular and meditative installations, the senior students will now reflect upon what we have seen at the gallery. It will help us to understand better the ideologies concerning man and nature through powerful statements in art, literature and drama.

a Quick Overview
The four week session program will suit 16-18 year olds who worry a lot about life in general, who put excessive pressure on themselves to achieve high standards, or who are just suffering from generally high levels of stress. Of course parents and teachers want young people to strive to do their best, but the marketing driven, materialist, image-obsessed, competitive culture in which they are growing up, can result in many young teenagers fearing they might not be able to measure up to the standards they imagine they have to meet in order to be considered successful and respected by their peers, teachers and family.
Excessive anxiety and stress is detrimental to optimum performance at school, to relationships with family and friends and togeneral health. Learning to handle pressure and seek a balanced life can equip young people with skills that will benefit them throughout life.
Mindfulness relaxation is an evidence based practice that has beenshown to be helpful in assisting individuals build resilience. Even young teenagers can benefit from learning some of the basic techniques.

Interact held its first meeting for 2014 with many new members
FIRST INTERACT MEETING - 2014
Planning a Holiday? Check School Term dates at http://www.marymount.qld.edu.au/news/Pages/Term-Dates.aspx
The first thing I noticed at Interact’s inaugural meeting for 2014 was that we will need to find a larger room to hold all our new members. The second was that with so many eager and enthusiastic members, 2014 could well be Marymount Interact’s most exciting year to date!
The purpose of this meeting was to welcome new and returning members and to discuss the different ways members can contribute to reaching the goals of Interact. President Millie Clout explained Interact’s association with Rotary and spoke about our proposed plans for the year. Millie then introduced the other Board members who in turn, explained their roles within the club.
Members were then grouped according to their area of interest: Local, which handles local activities and fundraising; International, which will focus on our ongoing Vanuatu project; and Club, which is responsible for recruiting new members and keeping everyone up to date.
We thank staff members Mrs Scott, Ms Aki, Mrs Barlow and Mrs Weatherall for their continued support. Interact will meet next, Week 5, Tuesday 25th February and will meet fortnightly after this.

“Speed Dating With a Book”, was an activity encouraged and launched on Valentine’s Day! Teacher Librarian Mrs Janet Cartlidge worked with English class teacher Ms Mullins to promote reading amongst her three classes. Its success will now be continued with other classes participating in improving their reading skills and for some, just becoming interested in books!
The activity worked like this: when we arrived at the Library our class had a variety of books available on a group of tables. We sat around the tables, each student being able to select a book to read. Each person in the class gets to read the book of their choice for 5 minutes. Once the clock sounds, it is time to change your book. We rotated tables and then chose another book. After reading each book for the selected amount of time, we had to rate it. It was either ‘Yuck, Interesting, In love, I found my Match or Just a one night stand.’
The books that were chosen, were written in different genres; some of them I didn’t find appealing but others were interesting. For those of us who love to read, this activity was just great. For others, I believe it showed us what’s out there to read – and there is such a variety!
From my point of view I think that this activity was great to participate in and that it helps you when you’re reading a book in class as it helps you read more quickly and then you can actually find yourself reading more books!
We extend our thanks to Mrs Cartlidge and Ms Mullins for enabling us to have such a worthwhile experience!

Year 10 Geographers Tackle the Real Issues
On Valentine’s day, our Year Ten Geographers headed out into the field to tackle the real issue of erosion on our southern Gold Coast Beaches. The day was spent measuring and observing erosion and deposition of sand along our beaches.
Once we return to the classroom, we will be analysing our data and making important decisions about how to tackle this problem, particularly at Palm Beach, where there is a clear need for something to be done. Students will be deciding on the best long term option. Should we move back from the coastal dune system, or can we manage this problem in another way?
My thanks to our outstanding Year Ten class of 2014. Your conduct in the field, your work ethic and your enthusiasm is a credit to you all. Well done!

We were all very excited. The MacBooks will have many benefits for us, such as being a convenient way to do assignments and make research for studying much easier. MacBooks are also a great opportunity for teaching responsibility. Although the MacBooks are very convenient to have, they also include many distractions. Some of these distractions include social media such as Instagram, and Facebook as well as different applications.
Even though there are these many distractions, MacBooks are a great learning tool for students.

The Oceanic District Swimming Championships were held at Pizzey Park pool in Miami yesterday. Marymount students swam against Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Elanora SHS, Miami SHS, Merrimac SHS, Robina SHS and Varsity College.
