Uch Power (Private) Limited

I would  like to welcome you all to the recent edi on of UPL Newsle er.  It delights me to say that 2014

has been a happening year on account of various developments. The  successful  inaugura on of Uch  II

Plant is a big step forward as it has added 404 MW to the overall genera on capacity of UPL.

Furthermore, the greater emphasis has been on Health and Safety. This has been ensured and reinforced

with the introduc on of several Health and Safety Campaigns aiming to encourage a safer work place en‐

vironment. The announcement of monthly HSE Champions has mo vated employees to work harder  in

this  regard. Moreover, with  the  implementa on of  Ins nct So ware Learning System, employees have

been provided with an avenue to improve their personal and workplace safety.

Addi onally, we have been  involved  in aligning ourselves with the regional and  interna onal office  in a

broader context. Par cipa on  in GDF Suez Raid along with appraisement of Management Way  ini a ve

are major hallmarks in this context. In terms of automa on, HRIS has been successfully implemented and

its u liza on in performance management exercise is commendable.

In the end, I would like to appreciate everyone for their efforts. I hope this coming year will bring happi‐

ness for you and your families, wishing you all a very happy new year.

Sincerely,

Rodak Ali Iqbal

Welcome note from CEO

Health and Safety  learning software “Instinct” has been  implemented.  It  is already  in

use  across  assets  of  SAMEA  region.  It  will  aid  in  structuring  and  ameliorating  our

knowledge on aspects pertaining to Health and Safety. Employees can make full use of

this software by  logging on with their user  id and enhance their personal and profes‐

sional development.

Manager HSE and Manager HR are  the  focal persons  to contact  in case of any query

both at Power Station & Head Office.

Implementation of Instinct Software Learning System

As the year end is approaching Management decided to hold a session on Performance

Management. This time around whole activity will be carried out online via the Human

Resources Information System. In order to acquaint and align employees with the new‐

ly  implemented software  it was  felt  that  it  is exceedingly  important  to hold a session

and explain whole process. Employees attending the PM session took keen interest and

inquired  about  different  aspects  relating  to  the  subject.  Some  valuable  suggestions

were also shared that will certainly help to  improve and uplift the newly  implemented

system. It is hoped that this activity will add to better understanding of employees and

usage of software will give them ease and convenience.

Launch of “Management Way” Initiative

Joint presentation was organized for Plant and Head Office on “Deployment of the

GDF Suez Management Way in SAMEA”

Management Way is a state of mind that reflects spirit of one of the Corporate pro-jects “By People For People”. It is embedded with the Group’s values and aims at guiding managers to work together, manage their team and think in a way that re-flects the Group culture in everything they do, at all times and in all areas.

It was a good interactive session that provided employees to understand

the philosophy of concept that says “It is the expression of what unites

us & the behaviors we should adopt within the company.

The evolution of humans has led to excellence and

this has been an observed phenomenon in history.

Unequivocally, the same could be said about or-

ganization as they evolve to streamline their pro-

cesses and improve efficiency. Consider our very

own setup where initially HR was mainly involved

in a transactional role owing to its support nature.

Consequently, this increased operational hassle,

leaving little or no time for us to act as a strategic

partner. However, with the incorporation of HR

information system we have been able to mini-

mize this operational working and subsequently

taken a step towards a strategic role.

The incorporation of this system has been a tu-

multuous ride that can be traced back to vendor

selection. Three vendors were shortlisted based

on a comprehensive model and among these

three we opted for Oracon as it best suited our

requirements. Oracon has been involved in power

sector with clients like EnI, Hubco and KAPCO.

This experience has equipped them with neces-

sary skill set to understand our industryʼs dynam-

ics. After vendor finalization, a project team was

organized with the collaboration of HR, IT and

Oracon. This team over a period of six months

translated HR record on the system and together

we have been able to start Employee Self Service

portal. The Recent execution of Performance Ap-

praisal on the system in itself is a big step for-

ward; as this has made the process more trans-

parent and consistent across the board.

In conclusion, HR information system will remove

data redundancies, ensure consistency across the

board and will help in effective decision making.

The system has a lot to offer and it will also

evolve for the best. As the philosopher Heraclitus

said, “there is nothing permanent in life except

change” and every change brings us out of our

comfort zones. Nonetheless, we will be stepping

out of our comfort zones and as project coordina-

tors, we shall facilitate this transition so that you

can benefit from the system.

“It  is pertinent  to  thank  the  senior management that includes Rodak Ali Iqbal, Syed Amjad Shabbir, Syed Saqib Hasan and Waseem Ellahi for their con‐stant support and trust on the project team”.
