Bright Futures News

Reconciliation Week kicked off with a digital light display on the Geelong City Hall. After a moving smoking ceremony and speeches by dignitaries from the region the light show was launched.

Many images from the Bright Futures artwork collection were exhibited along with other art pieces from local Indigenous artists. In total 100 images flooded the hall to the accompaniment of a didgeridoo soundtrack.

If you are in Geelong it is well worth a look and the display will be showing from 6pm until midnight every night.

Reconciliation in the Park was also a hit on Sunday. There were many activities and a chance to catch up with familiar faces from the community. A special performance by Yirrmal and Norm Stanley weren’t to be missed.

An exciting exhibition of students work from the community including our latest piece is currently running at the Geelong Gallery. An excursion for the students involved was also available this week, visiting the Geelong Gallery, The Courthouse Arts to meet artist and former AFL player Nathan Djukkurra and finally to Narana to see their new exhibition. We wish all a great Reconciliation Week!

Northbound Lombok Exchange Group Arrives Safely

We have arrived safely in Indonesia! The Garuda flight was very smooth and enjoyable, we watched as many movies as possible and ate a Mango Weis Bar after our lunch. In Bali we stayed at J Boutique Hotel again and the students enjoyed walking to Kuta beach, checking out the sites and bargaining a little bit. On Sunday we got a domestic flight to Praya, Lombok and our friend Bu Dayu was at the airport to meet us again, along with the Principal Pak Wing. The first night with the hosts was memorable, there was a little confusion about using a traditional bathroom but we got through it! Monday morning we participated in a very formal and impressive

assembly where we were greeted and welcomed. We will be in contact again to let you know how it unfolds here at SMANSA, and later in the week at the orphanage and Gili Trawangan. Apparently on Thursday there is a karaoke and traditional dress up competition! Semangat!

Aspire Classes

This week the Year 7 and 8 Aspire classes were working electron microscopes. This was held in the building referred to as the Geelong Technology Precinct (GTP). Further information about this dynamic section of the university can be found at: https://www.deakin.edu.au/gtp/about.php

Students in both Year 7 and 8 classes were given the unique opportunity to enter the electron microscope facility. Hosted by Deakin Electron Microscope Manager, Andrew Sullivan, students observed an ant in the microscope. The ant (Myrmecia Forficat) had been gold plated which holds the specimen together when it undergoes the immense pressure of the vacuum within the microscope.

Students studied relative size. At this point, Andrew is showing students the gold plated ant before it goes into the microscope.
