From the Deputies

With Mrs Brookton taking leave, both Mr Radley (HT Science) and Ms Caws (HT CAPA) will be moving into the Deputy Principal role at different times over the remainder of 2014. This will occur as Ms Gorick and Mr Harvie alternate in the Principal‘s role. Term 2 is always our busiest term at Glenmore Park High School. This year is certainly no exception! Term 2 marks the beginning of competitions for a large number of our winter sport teams. It has been a great pleasure watching our Rugby League and Soccer teams playing already this term. It is also the time of cross-country and athletics carnivals. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our sporting competitors the best of luck over the next few months. Our school website and official Facebook page are very important sources of information for events in the school. Please ―Like‖ our official Facebook page so that you can receive up-to-date information regarding school activities. This term marks the beginning of assessment periods for all students. At the time of writing the key time for assessment has passed for junior classes. The trial HSC begins in Week 8. We wish all students the best in these very intense examinations With the start of the colder weather, it is a timely opportunity to remind parents and students about the expectations relating to school uniform. The school jacket or jumper is available from ―Back to Basics‖. ―Hoodies‖ and other branded jackets are not acceptable as uniform. It is also timely to remind students that valuable electrical items such as iPods and mobile phones are brought to school at your own risk. The school does not take any responsibility for these items and recommends that they are not brought to school. Our junior students are currently undertaking important welfare programs on preventing cyber-bullying. Unfortunately one of the negative aspects of the rapid growth in communication technology has been its abuse by some young people. The rise in social networking websites has opened new avenues to harass people in all walks of life. All schools are working hard to alert young people to their responsibilities and also the consequences of their behaviour. Groups of Year 7, 8 and 9 are also undertaking the ―Boys Rites‖ program. This program is designed to help our young men navigate some of the difficult issues facing them in 2014. The aim of the lessons are to help our young men maintain a positive outlook and also assist in their engagement with learning. We have had very positive feedback so far! We wish you every success over the next few months. Stuart Harvie, Heidi Caws and Kevin Radley Deputy Principals

The Sydney West Dance Festival

Dance students performed in The Sydney West Dance Festival during Week 6, held in the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers. Year 11 and 12 students performed ‗Rebirth‘ and ‗Geisha‘ was performed by our school ensemble. What a fabulous effort by all. Barbara Brazewell Dance Teacher, CAPA

On Tuesday 20th May, 2014 we took a strong team of runners to the Nepean Zone Cross Country carnival at Knapsack Oval, Glenbrook. The course is quite gruelling and we would like to thank all competitors for their fabulous efforts throughout the day. All students behaved superbly and they were a credit to Glenmore Park High School. Well done to the following students who have now represented the Nepean Zone at the Sydney West Cross Country carnival at the Penrith Regatta Centre on Wednes-day 11th June, 2014: Emily Lubec, Mikayla Gadd, Jacob Voorn, William Brown, Malachi Rauhina, Joshua Barrett, Chelsea Graham, Lachlan Quayle, Caleb Pawlutschenko, Matthew Auld, Joshua Kalwy, Analiese Langer, Chelsea Fyffe and Madeline Schneider. This is a large number of students to get through to this very competitive level of competition and we certainly wish all the students much success and look forward to some fantastic results. It has been a pleasure to work with the cross country team this year. Justine Drew and Casey Smith PDHPE Teachers

At the end of term 2, we will complete Phase One of our Improving Literacy National Partnership project. We have received great recognition for our efforts on the Literacy project from the Department of Education and Communities who have requested the school become a case study for the project to model best practice for other schools in the area of inclusive literacy instruction. Over the past three terms our wonderful Literacy Team has worked closely with Year 7, 8 and 9 students to successfully develop their comprehension and word attack skills through the MultiLit programs. Our Focus on Reading Leaders, led all of our staff through the 35 hour Focus on Reading course. This has allowed staff to develop their understanding of teaching students how to read and comprehend information more effectively. A big thank you to the staff who have been busily implementing their Focus on Reading training in their teaching and learning programs. Staff have undertaken two Lesson Study Observations where they worked with a partner to view each other's delivery of literacy instruction to students. The staff then reflected on their performance and the skills they used during their lessons. Two staff members are currently being trained as leaders in Focus on Reading 2, which will assist in the implementation of Phase 2 of the project. Our English staff have been running Silent Reading sessions with their Year 7 and 8 classes with great success. The project has currently funded over $4000 worth of novels to support this initiative and we will be adding $2000 of extra books in phase two of the project so we can extend the program to our Year 9 and Year 10 students. Our ALARM (A Learning and Response Matrix) team have completed the first phase of this excellent course aimed at developing student's abilities to write extended responses requiring higher order thinking skills like evaluate, assess and analyse. This training will be delivered to all staff during Phase 2 of the project. Not only will it help our junior students but our senior students will be taught how to use the matrix to respond to HSC questions more effectively. Thank you to all the students in Year 7, 8 and 9 for their patience in the testing phases of our project. An even bigger thank you to our target students who actively participated in the comprehension and MultiLit workshops. Without your participation and tremendous effort our project would not have been as successful. Congratulations on a job well done! Students who participated will be presented with a certificate of completion and a copy of their final Literacy report at a small ceremony in Week 9. Students will be contacted shortly to arrange this ceremony.

On Thursday 3rd of May, 2014 Year 7 visited the Blue Mountains National Park and Scenic World for our Geography subject. We first took a bus trip to Echo Point to take pictures of the Three Sisters and eat recess. We then jumped back on the bus and headed to Scenic World.

At Scenic World we were split into two groups with Scenic World guides Sharon and Dave. Our group started off on the Skyway, a cable car up to 250m off the ground. The floor became invisible so we could see down to the tree tops below which looked like Broccoli. The group then went on the Scenic Railway;

the world's steepest railway. There were two seat settings, the laidback (looking up at the sky) and the cliff-hanger (looking STRAIGHT down!). As a group we picked the cliff-hanger setting which made for an interesting experience! Once at the bottom, we went on a guided walk of the Scenic World on a walkway with many sculptures set all around us. We also saw a really old coal mine and got to touch some coal. We learnt all about the Blue Mountains National Park and the amazing things it has to offer.

Lastly we got on the Cable way to take us back to the top. A similar experience to the Skyway without the invisible floor but we got to see Orphan Rock and The Three Sisters.

Finally we finished experiencing a wonderful tour, thanked our tour guides for their tour and we parted ways back to school.

On Friday 23 May a group of 47 Year 10 students accompanied Mr Fryirs, Ms Kupresak and Ms Hickey to the Kurnell / Cronulla coastal region as part of their fieldwork for Geography.

The day consisted of 3 stops. The first at the Woolooware Mangroves Boardwalk, the second at Kurnell and the final stop at Wanda Beach. On the day students observed the geographical process and management strategies that have been discussed in class prior.

It was fantastic to have a great group of students participate in the fieldwork day and behave in an excellent manner. Watch this space for upcoming excursions planned for our junior Geography courses. Steve Fryirs HSIE Teacher

Sydney Tower Excursion

The Senior Leadership Team have recently begun discussions on the creation of a Glenmore Park High School Senior Leadership Team Constitution. In years past a draft Constitution has been created and this year the 2014 team are offering valuable insight into what it means to be part of a Leadership Team. Once created this Constitution will be an important document for our school. I would like to congratulate all the senior leaders in their continued discussions, input and leadership skills all catering towards the various programs that we have running in the school. Steve Fryirs HSIE Teacher

A Message from the Senior Leadership Team

On Thursday 29th May a number of Year 10 Food Technology

students travelled by train to Sydney Tower Restaurant. As part of their unit of study on Food Service and Catering they had a guided tour of the back of house operations of the kitchens, spoke with chefs and watched them in action preparing for the midday service. They heard the really interesting story behind the history of the building and the revolving restaurant.

The views were amazing and much time was spent identifying Sydney landmarks as the restaurant revolved. After this was the buffet lunch. All could eat from some great fresh and beautifully presented dishes. This helped bring together all the ideas and concepts studied in class.

Glenmore Park High School has been successful in our application to participate in Positive Partnerships 2014. This is a National program of professional development designed to increase understanding, skills and expertise in working with students with an autism spectrum disorder. Positive Partnerships is available to all primary and secondary schools, across Australia.

The program focuses on gaining up to date information about autism spectrum disorders and the impact on students‘ learning and participation. The program has been developed to work in partnership with parents and carers as to how we can best support students with an autism spectrum disorder in the classroom and how to create an ‗autism friendly‘ school culture. Initially, three staff members Mrs McCormick, Mr Prasad and Mrs Small will attend a four day professional development program that centres on building the schools‘ capacity. Following the professional development staff will be able to share and access additional information and resources through a dedicated interactive online learning portal. Jodie Small L.A.S.T.
