Quote of the week… ‘I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it’ - Thomas Jefferson

Canterbury Winter Tournament…. This year breaking from tradition the Malvern Zone elected to send Tournament Teams to the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Winter Tournament held in Christchurch on Thursday 27 August 2015. This effectively meant that rather than the winning school from the Malvern Winter Tournament progressing on to Canterbury, a Tournament Team from each of the four sports was selected and competed as representatives of our zone. Due to entry complications the Zone teams had to be entered as individual schools i.e., Football (Hororata), Netball (Darfield Primary), Hockey (Darfield Primary), Rugby (Kirwee). Ironically for us the Hororata Football team had no Hororata students in it. The results from the day saw the Malvern Teams achieve the following success: Football (5th), Netball – Junior A (2nd), Hockey (4th), Rugby (3rd=). Well done to Ben Smith, Tom Freeman, Hamish Thornley and Oliver Blackburn who represented our school and the Malvern Zone in hockey and rugby.

Education Outside the Classroom… As reported previously, this year’s senior residential camp (Yrs 4-6) will be held in Hanmer Springs during the week of Wednesday 16 – Friday 18 September 2015. To enable the children to contribute toward the cost of camp we ran a ‘Womble Drive Fundraiser’ on the afternoon of Wednesday 26 August 2015. This saw Hororata students picking up rubbish along the streets/roads of Hororata. I am pleased to report that we raised in excess of $1,200 for camp. This money has been tagged to go towards activities for students on school camp e.g., Hot Pools and Hydroslide.

Haere mai... I would like to welcome Isaac McCorkindale (Piwakawaka) to our school. I am confident that your time here will be both enjoyable and rewarding.

Finally, at Hororata we believe that students need to master the basic skills of literacy and numeracy; be confident, motivated and healthy; and have a strong sense of identity. These foundations are critical for success and engagement in learning throughout life. These foundation skills have been divided into three core areas: The Mind (knowledge and awareness); The Heart (attitudes, values & beliefs); The Backpack (skills & strategies for life). Attitudes, values and beliefs underpin the school curriculum and are represented with the acronym P.R.I.D.E. In demonstrating the school’s values, adults and children will be:

Confident, will persevere and show resilience when striving to achieve their personal best… Personal Best

Caring of themselves, others and the environment, and show appropriate manners… Respect

Honest, take responsibility and accountable for their actions… Integrity

Understanding, tolerant and inclusive of others... Diversity

Motivated, self-improving, risk takers… Excellence

Thanks for supporting our school

Marty Gameson (Principal)

Piwakawaka (Yrs 0-2) Miss Raybould

We are excited to welcome Isaac McCorkindale to Piwakawaka. Now we have two Isaacs just like we have two Joshes. Just a reminder about visiting the library. We go every Tuesday afternoon although sometimes we have to go on a later day of the week. Most people are remembering to bring their library books back to school in their book bags on Monday, however there are a few books outstanding at the moment. Can you please help your child get them organised each week as we would love to see all children getting the chance to fully make use of our fabulous library. Now the weather is starting to warm up we are having to take layers of clothes off during the day. It is amazing how we can have clothes left at the end of the day that no one recognises! I have had vests, socks and t shirts left and no owners. It would be really helpful to have them named so they go home with the right owner.

Regards Julia

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart Hello all. Busy times! I don’t think I’ve ever been this tired and still at least 2 more weeks to go. In class we have been doing some new art that will go up on the wall next week and some very creative writing about doors leading us to our doom or delightful things. I have to say the kids in Kea have very creative imaginations when coming up with things that will scare or enchant you! Pop in and take a look at their work. Don’t forget our ski day on Wednesday. Come prepared with lots of layers. Thank you to all those who put so much time and effort into making this day possible for the children. It is very much appreciated. Regards Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

How time flies, tomorrow we are off skiing – how lucky we are to have such a generous PTA that pays for us to do this awesome activity. Everyone is super excited to spend the day up the mountain and I wish the teams who are racing good luck. It would be exciting if you came home with the trophy (again). Come along on Friday night to the school disco that Annabelle and Jade have organised – should be great fun. In class we have finished off writing our information reports, I am thrilled with our results. We have now started on narrative writing. In maths we are learning about fractions. One last thing please, please could you ensure that your child has a book bag as I am having books coming back to school in a bad shape. Have a good week hope to see you up the mountain.

BOYS & GIRLS AGRICULTURAL DAY

Thursday 19 November 2015 Canterbury Park Should a pet be judged champion on our Pet Day they may be eligible to compete at the Championship Day held at the Canterbury Agricultural Park on Thursday 19 November. Project Book: important to label your project with your full name, school year and category. Commitment: responsibility of the animal carer (a log or diary might help). It is expected that this is a shared and educational task with the family but...evidence of pupil involvement is essential. Knowledge: What happens to the animal, e.g. does it leave the farm or particular foods that are appropriate or features relevant to the pet. Presentation: Some are done with a computer and that is fine, but as primary school is the only place and time where writing is taught a well presented had written document is equally as acceptable. Also of note that classes are split into two age group sections: Juniors beings years 1-4, and Seniors years 5-8. I will be responsible for handing the Project book into the office so they must be with the pet on the day of the school Pet Day.

ASB Due to the popularity of ASB Score, the game is back on. Saving $1 could score your child a share of $5,000.00. If your child has a Headstart account which is registered for the ASB School Banking Programme, they may have the chance to win $10, $20 or $50 in fortnightly cash prizes to encourage them to make regular savings. So to enter the fortnightly cash prize draw simply deposit at least $1 into your child’s Headstart account between Monday 31 August 2015 and Sunday 15 November 2015 and you will be in with a chance. If you are registered for the ASB School Banking Programme and deposit or transfer these funds into the account electronically, enter ‘score’ in the reference so your child is automatically entered.

Whole School Ski Day… On Wednesday 9 September 2015 children will be travelling to Porters Ski Area for our Whole School Ski Day. Once again the fantastic Hororata Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in partnership with the BOT will be funding this awesome day in the snow incl. transport. Ski lessons and gear hire (free to all school students). The PTA will also be providing lunch for the children/staff. They will receive something warm, a drink, a piece of slice/cake and a piece of fruit. We ask for a small $2 donation per person to help cover some costs of the lunch. Children will be transported to and from the ski field by school bus. We will be departing school at 8.30am and returning to school by 4.30pm. There will be no late school bus service running on this day. Parents are expected to pick up their children from school at 4.30pm. When travelling to the mountains, it is important that we all have appropriate clothing and supplies. The weather is often unpredicta-ble and it is vital we are prepared for all eventualities! A checklist is available for families on the parent link on school website at http://hororata.ultranet.school.nz/WebSpace/42/ It is expected that all students will wear their Safety Vests to, from and on the field.
