Piwakawaka (Yrs 0-2) Miss Raybould

Miss Raybould left New Zealand shores to visit the United Kingdom

yesterday.

Mrs Cookson will be in the classroom most mornings and sometimes

all day with Mrs Foster picking up the afternoons and Mrs Cullen-

Reid relieving on Friday. Normal classroom routines will be followed.

Any messages can be made by contacting the school office on

318 0803, or emailing, [email protected]

Thank you for your support...

Regards.

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all,

In Kea we are learning about how essential water is to life and how

lucky we are in New Zealand to be able to turn on a tap and get clean

water. We are also going to be looking at the water cycle and what

water is made of.

Ski day is next week. Be sure to name as much clothing as possible

as skiing is hard work and many layers get discarded along the way.

Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

Hi Everyone

This week we are finishing off our Information Report writing, ask

your child what they have chosen to write about! The children are

going to get a chance to present these in a cool fun way and they will

be displayed in the classroom.

Last week we presented our posters in assembly, I was really

impressed with the final result and will display them in the Library so

everyone can see them.

Not long until camp now, Mr G has been working hard to make sure

that everything is booked. By the sounds of things there won’t be a

spare moment. I know from the chatter I hear in the classroom and

the playground the children are getting very excited. Enjoy the rest of

your week.

Quote of the week… ‘Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success’ - Henry Ford

Our Active Culture…

Canterbury Winter Tournament… Observing the precedence set in 2015, the Malvern Zone elected again to send Tournament Teams to the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Winter Tournament held in Christchurch on Thursday 25 August 2016 i.e., rather than the winning school from the Malvern Winter Tournament progressing on to Canterbury, a Tournament Team from each of the four sports was selected and competed as representatives of our zone. Due to entry complications the Zone teams had to be entered as individual schools i.e., Football (Hororata), Netball (Darfield Primary), Hockey (Greendale), Rugby (Kirwee). Congratulations to the following students who were selected for their respective Malvern teams to compete at the Canterbury Winter Tournament: Ben Smith (Hockey); Will Cookson (Rugby) and Samuel Hadfield (Football).

Our Learning Culture… The Good Life… Our Semester II integrated curriculum theme is aptly named ‘The Good Life’. The theme, based on the four main ingredients for health & happiness, will see children learning about WATER (H2O2GO) - what it is, where it comes from and how we use it; NUTRITION (5+@Day) – what we eat, how we eat and the value of healthy eating; CARING FOR OURSELVES (Numero Uno) – sleep, rest, relaxation, resilience; PHYSICAL ACTIVITy (Let’s Get Active) – being active, benefits of being physically active for life.

As an integrated topic children will explore the ‘The Good Life’ through all of the essential learning areas and will gain valuable life skills to help our children live healthy and happy lives. This topic is part of collaborative planning initiative where teachers have worked together to create an interesting and innovative learning programme for all the children at Hororata. It brings together the knowledge and expertise we have across the curriculum on our staff and will see our teachers working across different levels within the school.

Complimenting this theme you will also see children learning about the Central Plains Irrigation Scheme; the 2016 Paralympics; Water Safety; sustainable living and conservation. There will also be plenty of opportunity for students to share their learning with parents and the wider school community.

Finally, while parents know that raising children is a costly business, they may be surprised to find out that estimates put the bill at $250,000 per child or on average $267 per week. These figures come from a study, commissioned by Inland Revenue (Aug 2009), used to determine child-support payments. It covers only expenses for "average" parents raising a child to the age of 18. It does not count stay-at-home parents' loss of income or childcare costs.

Interestingly, the authors of this report concluded that parents on a high income would spend almost three times as much on a single child as those on a low wage and that the more children you have, the less it costs to raise each one by the use of hand-me-downs etc. Not surprisingly, children aged 12 and under cost less than teens.

Now, given the expense of raising a child, it amazes me at the amount of lost property/unclaimed children’s clothing that we accumulate at school. As a Principal and parent, I know that these items cost someone a lot of money and that kids are kids and tend to lose things now and then. Parents are invited to search through our lost property mountain in the BIG RED WHEELIE BIN or better yet ensure that all your child’s clothes are name… you name it we can return it!

Thanks for supporting our school

WALT - Write how a character is feeling.

Tyrecee - When I am cheerful I would chuck flowers in the blue sky and jump for joy.

Emily B - I am feeling happy. I run around and smell the flowers. I laugh and giggle.

Hubert - When I am happy I play football. I kick the ball to my next door neighbour’s. I laugh even though I’ll get in trouble.

Isla - I’m sad. I would sit there on my window sill, quietly crying. The tears go down my cheeks and then onto my neck. It feels wet

Seth - I am laughing at my cat. I feel happy. I jump on my bike and ride down the road. The wind blows into my face and I want to

go faster!

Brodie - I am jumping for joy with a big grin, top to bottom. I could jump as high as a sky scraper and I wave at every person.

Emily W - I am happy. I smile all day long. I giggle all year long. I feel like doing 50 cartwheels.

Ellie - I’m sitting on the ground. I’m kicking dirt because it can’t hurt me. My feet are sore because I’m doing it so hard, but I don’t care. I’m giving evils at everyone who visits me. I’m so, so miserable I could punch Santa.

Logan - When I am happy I wave my arms in the sky and I scream, “YAY!!” I go up to Samuel and say, “High five Samuel!” and we high five.

Isaac W -When I am furious I stomp my foot like an elephant. I go to my room to calm down and read a book. I want to yell and scream.

Xavier - When I am livid with my family I stomp my foot and then I see red boiling up like a fire racing through my veins.

Josh T - When I am unhappy I would scream and howl like a dog in a kennel. I would run to my Mum.

Gracie - I am furious like the furious five, fighting bad guys. Throwing my raging thoughts up into the skies.

Eljane - I am furious like the furious five, fighting bad guys. Throwing my raging thoughts up into the skies.

Robert H - My furious face would go red and I would try to charge and fire like a cannon at my brother.

Jackson - I would run away and explode like dynamite. Anger would burst out like a balloon. I would be alone and I would want to punch myself in the face and wish it was them.

Dustin - When my baby brother annoys me I blow my top with him. I charge out of the room and storm into my bedroom. I find something to distract me from being so angry.

Taane - I grit my teeth. I slam my door like a bomb and put on an angry face so people know I’m angry.

Josh S - I was in the grass making grass angels. I jump in the meadow. I would trot through the grass. I would zoom into my joyful

mode.

Miles - I put my head in my knees and cry in a pool of tears for one minute. I would wait for someone to come and give me a

manly pat on the back.

Toby - When I am happy I laugh out loud with my friends and make jokes up. I feel overjoyed that my friends actually like my

jokes.
