Church of the Ascension
Ascension Makes an Impact!
Dear Friends:
The Church of the Ascension is a premiere parish in southeast Louisville. While
other Catholic parishes report declines in Mass attendance, school enrollment as
well as in financial stability, Ascension has improved its position in all three
areas.
If you have been away from Ascension for awhile, I urge you to consider actively
participating in our welcoming, vibrant and joyous community. It has been such a
humble privilege to serve as the shepherd for Ascension since mid-2014 and to be
a simple witness to its spiritual growth.
This edition of “Attention Ascension” is about transparency. The Spirit-led and
Spirit-fed successes of this parish have resulted from YOUR stewardship: the
giving of time, talent and treasure to building up the People of God on the journey
to the Kingdom! And that Kingdom is not only evident in the heavenly realm,
but, also demonstrated in the works (the mercy, acts of forgiveness and actions of
charity) which Ascension undertakes each day.
Here are the numbers for the year concluded June 30, 2017:
-Total income for the parish, including all ministries, was $2.6 million. This result
was $111,000 above the budget plan.
-The most significant income source was in tuition and school fees which totaled
$908,000. Stewardship contributions met the budgeted level for the year at
$776,000 with Kids’ Time fees ($402,000) and cafeteria income ($104,000)
ranking 3rd and 4th as parish income sources.
-Total expenses for the parish were $2.5 million, slightly more than the budgeted
level. Expenses directly attributable to our school ministry totaled $1.3 million
and Kids’ Time expenses came in at ($375,000).
-As a stand-alone program, Kids’ Time made over $26,000. This profit was used
to fund the tuition assistance program. School ministry expenditures required
support from not just tuition and school fees but also from fundraisers such as the
summer festival (a profit of $95,000) as well as PTO-based support ($58,000).
General parish support (e.g., stewardship contributions and other income) made
up the difference between school income and expenses.

ASCENSION FINANCIAL REPORT
Actual to Budget
Cont. from page 1
The athletic ministry turned a small surplus at roughly $3,000 and the cafeteria operation was in the black by
$5,500.
Overall, Ascension parish, experienced a net gain of $79,000 this past year.
Managing the financial condition of the parish truly takes a village. I want to thank our Finance Committee for
their oversight; the leadership of Theresa Garrett for day-to-day tasks and, of course, the many who
contributed to the success of the parish this past year.
Onward to 2018!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Reverend Steven Henriksen
Pastor

30 students took part in ANCHOR, our
new religious education program,
launched in September 2016. ANCHOR
takes place every Sunday between Masses and is truly a place to be “anchored” in our Faith!
Ascension hosted Summer Bible School in July 2016.
There were 44 children who participated and many
volunteers helped to make this a huge success. The
theme was “Bible Adventures with Holy Heroes,” and
it was a wonderful and exciting experience for all!
