What We Stand For at CNPrécis of Jim Vena’s speech at the 79th Annual Dinner
Using graphics on the giant screen, Jim reviewed CN’s third quarter performance as well as operationl highlights for the whole year. He spoke about what CN stands for: delivering operational and service excellence, creating value for customers and shareholders, delivering safely and responsibly and playing its role as a backbone of the economy.
Referring to CN’s third quarter highlights, he said that the company’s performance was outpacing market conditions and growing at low incremental cost. CN had a solid operating ratio of 59.8%. CN also had an FRA (U.S. Federal Railroad Admin-istration) accident rate of 1.31. In that quarter, he said that CN’s train productivity was 2% better, yard productivity 13% better, locomotive utilization 4% better and car velocity 5% better.
Looking ahead Jim said that he sees strengths in grain, paper, bulk chemicals and chlorine. “Our main goal is to grow with our customers,” he said. He showed how CN’s revenue was split between bulk 23%, intermodal 20% and manufacturing 47%.
Turning to safety, he said that following the Lac Mégantic dis-aster, rail safety was under intense scrutiny. CN’s post Lac Mé-gantic initiatives included enhanced securement of unattended trains/cars, corridor risk assessments, focused investments in technology to strengthen prevention along with commumity engagement in the process. “We are focused on ways to make the railroad safer,” he said.
