Victor Salvi spent much of his life studying the harp, to improving its mechanism and contributing to the development of this beautiful instrument. His legacy as a luthier shows us the influence and importance of this work for the music: a child who learns how to play in a low-quality instrument, rearly reachs perfection. Since it began, one of the objectives of the Fundación Salvi, was to work for the qualifications of the instruments makers and to support the new generations of luthiers so later, they can fulfill the needs of both, the musical institutions and the musicians of Colombia In October 2007, the Foundation started its program on Maintenance and Repair of wooden instruments. Since then, we have invited Italian luthiers Giancarlo Quaranta and Marcello Mittaridonna as well as Colombian wellknow luthiers Carlos Arcieri and Jose Luis España, who are over 30 years of experience in this profession. Almost 50 instrument makers

from cities such as Bogota, Buenaventura, Cali, Leticia, Manizales, Medellin, Pereira and Villavicencio have been benefited by this opportunity that strengthens this type of work . Colombian organizations involved in this process (Ministry of Culture of Colombia, SENA -National Learning Institute, for its abbreviation in Spanish-, Batuta Foundation, the School of Arts and Crafts Santo Domingo and Salvi Foundation) have seen the importance of defining the parameters and training levels required to develop of luthería in Colombia, it is vital to guide our work in laying the groundwork to establish a career as a technique that has a better future and a greater presence in the country.

THE ART OF INSTRUMENT-MAKING

The lutherie is the art that strives for the excellence in building an instrument to achieving the best sound. The word "luthier" comes from the French word luth meaning lute, and was initially used to refer to the builders of stringed instruments, however, slowly it turned to be used for all instrument-makers. For centuries the lutherie was a silent art: instrument-makers passed their knowledge orally, usually in the same family for generations. There are no written records of ancient luthiers, however we know about their work and the instruments evolution by the frescoes of different cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Chinesse and Egyptians. In the first half of the sixteenth century, a school of stringed instruments-making was developed in the city of Cremona (Italy) ; its main representatives are the prominent families Stradivari, Amati and Guarnieri. Nowdays, Cremona is worldwide known as the place par excellence for training in this art, and the silence that characterized the luthier’s work trade has been replaced by a spirit of communication resulting in modern luthier schools and teachers willing to share their knowledge for the benefit of a further development of this art. In Colombia, this craft has not yet been formalized as a mayor school program.

Although the SENA -Colombian National Learning System- started 2 years ago the first program about the instrument-making craft. In 2007, with the support of the Colombian Ministry of Culture, was created the Colombian Association of Lutherie which brings together about 70 instrument makers of the country. Jorge Rodríguez, President of the Association, recognizes that the person who wants to became a luthier has a strong music devotion and faces many difficulties in his learning process: "There are books and articles to guide the process but it is very important that this learning occupation enriches itself with initiatives such as the workshops organized by the Fundación Salvi. To share this knowledge is vital to create better products and to develop new techniques. " To Rodriguez, the lutherie in Colombia faces other challenges that may limit its development: the cost of high-quality materials, the need to replace materials such as leather or wood in order to reduce the environmental impact, the optimization of production processes to reduce waste and to improve both the construction techniques and the final product as well as to develop new marketing mechanisms to expand the market. "The colombian market is still very tight and this compromises the survival of the luthier who is vulnerable to difficult economic situations."

With more than 25 years of experience in this craft, José Luis Españan earned the Medal of Master Artisan of Colombia, r e c o g n i t i o n g r a n t e d b y Artesanías de Colombia in 2000, Master Jose Luis España has distinguished itself as one of the builders of ancient instruments most important of our country.

España began on the craft as self-learning, motivated by the study of the cello. He studied music at the University of Nariño and music workshops in the cultural a rea o f the Banco de la Re publ i ca . Late r, E spaña explored the techniques of wood a n d a c o u s t i c o f s t r i n g e d instruments and began the study of Renaissance instruments beginning with the viola da gamba and lutes as well as acoustic techniques in focusing on the violins and classical Baroque.

Sandra Meluk, director of the Fundación Salvi Colombia, said that this concert is an excellent moment to promote both the Foundation's mission and the Cartagena Festival in the lives of young Colombians. "This is a great oppor tun i t y t o show how the Cartagena Festival has become a perfect moment for our students to meet and interact with great musicians who come to our country".

Clarinetist Todd Palmer, invited to this benefit concert for the Cartagena International Music Festival is very happy to participate as he recognizes the work of the Foundation to promote activities such as the outdoor free concerts in neighborhoods and places of the city and the performed master classes. Fonseca, has been invited to perform as a guest artist at a special tribute concert at Spoleto USA honouring retiring Artistic Director, Charles Wadsworth. Mr. Wadsworth announced his retirement as Artistic Director of the Chamber

Music Series of Spoleto Festival in June; having served as Artistic Director for over 30 years. The tribute concert will take place on Sunday May 31, at the Memmingen Auditorium of Charleston (South Carolina). Well-known artists such as French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, violinist Livia Sohn and the St. Lawrence String Quartet will perform. Miss Fonseca was personally invited by Mr. Wadsworth after hearing her perform during the

2009 Cartagena International Music Festival. Wadsworth, one of the most beloved figures of the Spoleto Festival and the Cartagena International Music Festival, won credit for his great contribution to the musical world by creating the most successful series of chamber music in the World: Lincoln Center (New York City), the Spoleto Festival (in Italy and Charleston), and most recently, the Cartagena International Music Festival.

The Salvi Foundation Colombia is pleased to announce that the artist invited to create the poster image Cartagena International Music Festival 2010 is Colombian José

Antonio Suárez Londoño.

Suarez Londoño was born in Medellín

(Colombia) in 1955. He studied at the School o f Vi sua l Ar t s in Geneva (Switzerland).

His fine drawings and prints highlitghted for their dimensions in many cases not bigger than the size of a letter sheet, but also for

the artist’s hability to present the same the most uneven surface. Much of his work has been done on small picture books that have been gradually looking like a private diary.

Julia Salvi, president of Fundación Salvi Colombia, announced an auction of silkscreened images of the Posters of the Cartagena International Music

Festival 2008 and 2009. Through this auction, the Fundación Salvi Colombia s eek s to ra i s e funds towards the development of the IV Cartagena International Music Festival and its educational projects.

"We are very pleased to make an auction with the beautiful images that Santiago and Juan Cardenas donated to the Cartagena Festival," says Julia Salvi. "The funds we raised in the first auction (April 2008) - were invested to strengthening

our educational program. This year, we

hope to exceed the amount collected sin order to increase the number of students and music teachers who benefit from our work. "

A limited number of silkscreens will be auctioned in June at the Club El Nogal (Bogota), with the presence of Santiago and Juan Cárdenas who have joined this c a u s e t h a t c o n t r i bu t e s o f achieving and supporting the Music Festival. Thus, art and music in perfect harmony for a Festival for the country.
