Ohio Slots In Jeopardy: A provision in the state=s budget bill, passed in July, seemed to pave the way for slot machines at Ohio=sseven racetracks. But the state Supreme Court ruledMonday that, before the measure can move forward, there must be a public referendum on the issue. Due tothe lateness of the decision, it is unlikely that there istime to get the slots referendum on the ballot this No-vember, so tracks will not know until next year if theywill get approval or not. But there could be a vote onwhether or not to legalize stand-alone casinos in four ofthe largest cities in the state at the next election.LetOhioVote.org has been collecting signatures to get areferendum regarding casinos on the November ballot. If the signatures they have accumulated are deemedvalid, casinos could get the nod from voters this fall, giving them as much as a year=s head start on the race-tracks in getting their gaming operations up and run-ning. The seven ractracks were expected to pay $65 million apiece for their slots licenses, but it is nowunclear whether those fees will be paid; if they don=t, itwill put the Ohio budget at a severe shortfall. The downpayments of $13 million were due last week, but onlytwo of the seven tracks--Northfield Park and ToledoRaceway--came up with that money. The delay in get-ting slots in Ohio could also have a negative effect onMagna Entertainment Corporation, which last weekagreed to sell Thistledown, outside of Cleveland, toHarrah=s Entertainment. Under the terms of the deal,Harrah=s will pay $89.5 million for the track--but only ifslots are legalized. If not, the price drops to $42 million.

AHe won at Naas first time and we gavehim a little break after that, but we are very happy withhim, and he is back in full work. We're looking at theDewhurst for him as well and, while there are a fewweeks to go, it is a case so far so good with him. He'sdone all of his work really well and hasn't disappointedus in any of it yet.@ O'Brien is also set to run the G3 Tyros S. and G2 Futurity S. winner Cape Blanco (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) there. "We've been very happy with himand we think he is going to be a very exciting horse,@O=Brien said. Francis VanlangendonckAccomplishment: Francis, along with his wife Barbara, consigned a$1.3-million daughter of Medaglia dOro--Beaties For Real during last

Wednesdays third session ofthe Keeneland SeptemberSale.Birthdate: August 13, 1956Birthplace: Alexandria,LouisianaFamily: Wife Barbara, sonsArthur, 22; and Andrew, 20.Current Residence:Morriston, Florida

What is your biggest accomplishment in the racing/salesbusiness? Having a sales agency, as big as it is, basically throughword of mouth. Were very proud of the horse we sold. When you sellone for that kind of price, especially at Keeneland, and it's thesecond-highest price, that's a pretty big accomplishment. It's hugelyimportant for people to realize that Summerfield can do that. Simply put, you've got to have the horse to get the money. She may have been theeasiest horse I ever sold--she basically sold herself. You just don't getthat many of them. How did you celebrate the sale? There's no down time, you know. Wemet with some close friends, had a couple of bottles of wine and wewere in bed by 9:30, because we had shipped in eight more horses toshow the next day. Do you have an idol inside or out of the business? Jerry Nielson. Heand I bought a farm together and built a business from basically notmuch into something great. We did it honestly and with good old hardwork.Funniest movie youve ever seen? Shrek. I went with my kids and Ilaughed the whole time. What is your favorite vacation destination? The British VirginIslandsBitter End Yacht Club. It's a beautiful place. What would Barbara say is the best thing about you? Probably mysense of humor. What would you say is the best thing about Barbara? She is thesmartest lady Ive ever met. Weve been married for 23 years.Whats playing on your iPod or CD player? I dont have either. I haveXM Radio and right now Im listening to ESPN Radio.Sports fan? You bet. Favorite team? Well, I like both college footballand basketball and, of course, its the Florida Gators.Favorite Lexington dining spot? I like The Merrick Inn. They havegreat steaks.
