By Curator Rachel O’Connor The Art Association of Harrisburg is pleased to present “Hear Me?” An Exhibition Celebrating Deaf Artists and “Bootleg Meets R76” a collaboration featuring the work of Charles “Bootleg” Feathers and Reina “R76” Wooden from February 21– March 26. These two exhibitions, sponsored by David Volkman, will open with a reception on Friday, February 21, from 5-8pm, hosted by Paper Lion Gallery & Frame Shop, Robert Potter, and the Millworks. “Hear Me?” An Exhibition Celebrating Deaf Artists “Do you hear me?” is a question asked by many visual artists through their work, but it has a special relevance for artists who identify as Deaf. Using the word Deaf with a capital “D” is an important signifier for people with hearing loss who communicate using American Sign Language (ASL) or other kinds of sign language. It denotes pride in their identity and indicates that they are actively engaged in the Deaf community. Yet the very language that binds the people of this community can often isolate them from those who do not understand it due to the prevalence of audism in our culture. Audism is a form of prejudice towards people with hearing loss that presupposes the superiority of spoken language over sign language. The visual language of art, much like the visual language of ASL, can be a powerful form of communication for Deaf people that re-emphasizes that one does not need to speak with their mouth in order to communicate. This exhibition seeks to foster communication between the Deaf community and the hearing community through artwork that explores the legacy of audism, the history of Deaf culture, and the future of Deaf pride. Hear Me? is curated by Arielle Mabsoute, a Deaf artist and self-advocate, and Linda Price, a visual artist and community arts organizer.

Bootleg Meets R76: A Collaboration

The AAH welcomes back contemporary artist Reina Wooden, known as Reina “76” Artist. Wooden is an eclectic artist, who uses various mediums to explore her ideas on current society and historical events. She is probably best known for her bold, abstract expressionistic acrylic paintings that deconstruct idioms and colloquial phraseology. However, Wooden does not set out to produce art that identifies a single topic or subject matter. For this exhibition, she evokes the power of participatory art in order to explore the current #MeToo movement. She also teams up with local sculptor Charles “Bootleg” Feathers.

On collaborating with Wooden, Feathers says, “we met 7 months ago to work on my #Bootleg fashion project. I wanted to aligned Bootleg fashion with her work. Being an Abstract Expressionist, #R76 captures tone and emotion in a way that intrigues and frustrates me. I wanted to learn more. We have collaborated ever since.” Feathers began his art career in 2012 after attending several ceramic classes at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). He describes himself as, “an Alchemist who works with everything from metal to paper, trash art to treasure.” Feathers will bring his Blue Chair installation (along with other work) to the AAH in February. There have been several renditions of the Blue Chair, all symbolizing various aspects of Mental Health awareness. His work has been exhibited at Susquehanna Art Museum, Green Street Studios, and Metropolis Collective. He also created the easily recognizable “Speede” logo, which is painted on the side of a barn on Rt 39, Linglestown Rd.

4 AAH NEWS & CLASSES

Art Association of Harrisburg and the honorable Peggy Grove (Harrisburg philanthropist and patron of the arts) invite you to attend “2020 Vision,” an exciting and spirited evening planned for Saturday, April 25, 2020, from 6-10 pm at the beautiful Country Club of Harrisburg. Inspired by history and looking to the future, AAH will capture the spirit of the Roaring 1920s and the possibilities of the 2020s.

A creatively designed menu of foods and specialty cocktails, inspired by the 1920’s but with a 2020’s twist, will be served. KJO’s Two-Beat Dames will perform live music, and DJ Jonathan Frazier will keep the tunes flowing all evening. Plan to come away with some fabulous items and experiences from the silent auction or some great wine from the wine pull. The “2020 Vision” gala replaces the Bal Masque as Art Association of Harrisburg’s single largest fundraising event for the year. Guests are still encouraged to dress in costume or “dress to impress” – 1920’s or 2020’s – and compete for prizes and applause in the costume parade.

Come and celebrate the changemakers, the innovators, the style and the energy of a great decade of the past… and imagine the wonders of the new decade before us.

All proceeds from “2020 Vision” will benefit Art Association of Harrisburg and help fulfill its mission to promote and encourage the visual arts through art exhibitions and education, enriching the well-being of the local community.
