PRG's "Slagyster" featured on Kyknet 20/8/2004 It is official: the Paul Roos bands are excellent! One of the most well-known Paul Roos bands, "Slagyster", will be featured on Kyknet on the programme "Kunskafee". Fans could see the video on "Kunskafee" on 15(19:30), 16(10:30) and 17(15:30) August. They did not only shoot two music videos -interesting, in-depth interviews were also conducted with each band member: Herman Kleinhans (guitar, singing), Nel Schoeman (guitar, singing) and Eduard Delport (percussion). The band "Slagyster" was a semi-finalist in die nationwide ATKV Crescendo competition.

Dit was nie so suksesvol nie a.g.v digte mis!

Bridge building 2004 14/5/2004 On 21 March three grade 12 learners from Paul Roos took part in the civil engineering bridge building competition that is being organised every year at the “Canal Walk” centre in Cape Town. The three participants were August Carstens, Philip Gous and Pieter Schoenees. 28 Western Cape schools were represented. Main sponsor of the event is ASLA Building Construction. Each school had the same material available: wooden blocks, glue and rope. The teams had five hours in which to plan and construct the bridge. The PRG team members were elected after several trial sessions at school - which meant that they were well prepared for the challenge. The bridge that Paul Roos constructed weighed a meagre 308g and could carry a massive weight of a 110kg. This formidable achievement gave PRG a 14th overall place. The winning bridge carried an incredible 325kg, a new South African record. PRG Mathematicians 23/4/2004 Ralf Kistner is one of only 16 high school learners in South Africa who were invited to attend a Mathematics camp / workshop in Grahamstown.

The camp took place from 4 to 9 April at Rhodes University and 2 teams of school mathematicians will be announced in May to represent SA internationally. Participants worked between 8 to 10 hours every day, solving the most challenging mathematical problems. And that excludes time spent on self-study! This picture was taken after the Harmony Gold Maths Olympiad with Ralf (right) and Adriaan Odendal(left). Ralf was one of the top ten juniors (grades 8 and 9) and Adriaan one of the best 100 seniors (grades 10 to 12)in this competition. Cape Epic Biketour 19/4/2004 The internationally acclaimed Cape Epic bicycle tour used Paul Roos' sport grounds as one of the camp sites in the event. The Tour consists of 887km of cycling through some of the most scenic parts of our country. Pinkbike.com described the tour as having "the potential to become one of the best mountain bike races in the world" From the Cape Epic website: An action-packed Stellenbosch stage! Day seven of the inaugural Magical and Untamed African Mountain Bike race brought once again a change in route and landscape. The action-packed stage contained some stunning scenic climbs and the original downhill course of the 1997 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Stellenbosch. For Downhill World Champion Greg Minnaar, who rode all the way from Knysna to the Winelands despite sore knees, it felt like coming home. “The last few days have been really hard, but today my knee was much better and I enjoyed the stage since it was a lot more technical – in fact I think it was the best stage so far. Blasting down the ’97 downhill course brought back old memories. Over here I started my downhill career.” 'n Few photos of the group on our school grounds: Text: N. Joubert Photos: A. Swimming Pool Renovations... 12/2/2004 The Paul Roos swimming pool has been a constant source of frustration lately. Due to the poor quality of the water, swimmers were not always visible under the surface - causing worried spectators some nail biting moments. After thorough consideration and analysis of the chemical substances in the water, all 750 000 litres of water had to be pumped out. The inner surface is being painted blue and after 3 coats of paint, the massive amount of water will be pumped into the pool again. It is hoped that the hard work will pay off for at least the next few years. Rector welcomes 213 Grade 8's 29/1/2004 During assembly on 27 January 2003, the Rector of Paul Roos Gymnasium, Mr C.W. de Jager, addressed the 213 Grade 8's who had received their maroon ties early Saturday morning. "Congratulations to 213 grade eights who became Paul Roosers on Saturday morning between half past 3 and 6 o'clock. You are the 138th group of pupils to joining this school - I can't say grade 8's - the first pupils of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium were quite probably primary and high school pupils of all ages. I realise that the orientation wasn't necessarily the most pleasant of experiences, but becoming a pupil of this school implies more than just being enrolled by your parents, is more than just turning up on the first school day and becoming another new boy in another new school. This is not a hotel where you come and go as you please - this is a proud institution with a wealth of tradition spanning over a century and 38 years. You have to earn your position in this school - even though you are only a grade eighter, you are wearing the same blazer, the same uniform as the rest. And during the past week you have earned the right to wear your tie with pride - you are not a number, you are not just a new face - you have joined a family of men who have made and still are making a difference to the lives of the people around

them. There are many traditions in this school, but I believe the most worthwhile are those concerning principles that have stood the test of time: A Paul Rooser is proud but not haughty. Pride is not haughtiness – pride without humility is haughtiness. Haughtiness says "I am the best" - Pride says "I am OK". Haughtiness says "God, but I am beautiful" - Pride says "God, but I am thankful". A Paul Rooser has a keen sense of sportsmanship - we play to win in sport, but whether we lose or win, we know that it is still a game. A Paul Rooser has a developed sense of justice, of being fair to the other person. A Paul Rooser can accommodate and respect other persons' view-points, although those view-points may differ drastically from his own. A Paul Rooser cares for others - he knows his own value, and therefore can extend a helping hand to those less fortunate. A Paul Rooser is a gentleman who has impeccable manners, who wears his uniform with pride, who fastens his top blazer button and his collar button, who does not put his hands in the pockets of his pants with the purpose of keeping it there, who stands up when an older person enters a room or talks to him. A Paul Rooser is different because he acts differently and vice versa - a Paul Rooser acts differently because he is different. A Paul Rooser stands out in a crowd because he still believes in the principles of honesty, decency and good manners. And I am not inferring that other schools are not trying to follow the same principles, we are definitely not the only ones. Grade eights, you have started on the road towards being a true Paul Rooser. You are the juniors of the school and as such don't have the same standing as the rest of the school. This will come in time as you travel the road to matric. I hope that you find the route an exciting, rewarding and fulfilling one. You are the juniors of the school - your task is to carry forward the spirit of the school. One day (in five short years) you will be the matrics - sitting in front in the middle of the assembly - the guardians of the traditions. You will be setting the example to a new group of 13, 14 year olds. Once more, welcome to the school.
