We are starting the new year with a bang! Our semaphore is gone, getting ready for a new coat of paint and cabinet. Christy Vault took our semaphore down on January 10 th to get it ready for the replacement cabinet from Niles Canyon. No more rust holes! The Town of Colma was extremely worried about someone getting hurt. They had placed a white picket fence around the semaphore to keep all away from it. Now we just have to be patient for all the work needed to be done for the replacement cabinet and reattachment of the signal to the cabinet. Bob Christenson has taken on this project as a labor of love. We will never be able to repay him for this work. It would have been thousands of dollars to complete this job if we had had to hire a contractor to do it all, let alone flndmg a contractor that was even capable of doing it right! Thank you, Bob Christenson and all of your crew. You are special! Another milestone reached as our Kiosk is in the works. Arnold Champagne, master carpenter has started on our display unit and it might be finished by the end of February. It depends a lot on when the 8 cabinets that were ordered for it will be finished and shipped to us from a company called Dallas Midwest. They cost over $3,000.- special made, back to back. First Quarterly Meeting:

We will have a short business meeting to tell you what was accomplished in 2009and what is planned for 2010. The main part of the program is going back in the pastand learning about one of our former residents who made headlines on a regularbasis. His name was Gordon Stone. A photographer! This is what his wife told usabout him.

He was a newspaperman who loved his work, anxious to go every day! DuringWWII, he spent three years at sea in the Merchant Marine. When the war was overhe found work at the San Francisco Examiner, then the flagship newspaper of theHearst Publishing empire. Gordon became a photographer and remained working atthe Examiner for 43 years until he retired in 1989.He photographed so many excitingstories, fires, campus riots, political happenings, close ups of celebrities and so muchmore!

In his 43 yrs. of work, he received many awards for his famous shots, most times hewas first on the scene. One was when he took the only photograph of Sarah JaneMoore when she tried to assaninate President Ford. For this he was nominated forthe Pulitzer Prize. Although he did not win it, that famous photo was used all over theworld.

He and his wife Shirley spent 51 happy years together here in Colma. He died in1998. Come hear his story and see his works displayed here at the museum Sunday,Feb. 14th.It is a history not only of the man but of events we have all lived through!

Our lady manikin, we have named her Stella is almost ready for her position to betaken on the bench in our train depot. Her clothes were donated by Connie O'Leary. She represents the turn of century (1900) when there were hundreds of passengersboarding the Colma train, going to or from San Francisco or San Jose or just one ofour cemeteries. Stella was named after Stella Jensen who lived here on F Street andSan Bruno Ave. (Now named Hillside Blvd.) Her husband was Mattrup Jensen,Olivet's first Superintendent and also Lawndale's (Colma's) first mayor. They weremarried in 1900 and his first job was with Cypress Lawn. We are waiting for her hairand makeup to be done by Georgette Sarles. She now resides in our office lookinglike she is ready to take part in all our activities. Stella was an educational leader andshe served 42 years as a school board trustee and in many other positions.

Deed of Gifts Received -- Thank you all!

Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery found in their archives an 1871 map (2 ft. x 2 ft. 8 in.)that they have donated to us. This map is two sided and shows on one side the AbbeyHomestead Association, which takes in the area east of Hillside Blvd., it was calledSan Bruno Ave. then. It displays the southeast end of Colma to the northeast end onGambetta St. now in Daly City. The other side is a map of Sunnyvale HomesteadAssociation, which covers the Daly City area near the Cow Palace. We are looking fora way to photocopy this and for someone to possibly restore the sections that havehad moisture damage.

We also received 2 maps from Glen Romero, whoworked in one of the offices of this building, 1500Hillside. She was here when it was closed down andsaved two maps that were in the safe that wouldhave been thrown away. One is the architecturalplans of 1500 Hillside (our present museum) anda map showing the part of Greenlawn Cemeterythat has the Odd Fellows grave site. That is thesection between Best Buy and the Home Depoton the south side of the Metro Center and ColmaBlvd. We had a copy made of this and gave theoriginal to Greenlawn Cemetery.

Mattrup Jensen's grandson, William Jensen, came in and gave us Mattrup's deskplate from Olivet Cemetery, circa 1945. It reads "M. Jensen" and has a perpetualcalendar on the back.

Ronald Doyle has donated 12 VHS tapes about history. They coverthe Revolutionary, Civil War, WWII, Native American Indiansand gun-fighters of the old west. Ron also gave us a book, "TheEncyclopedia of World Costume"
