Definition of Media
A specific kind of artistic technique or means of expression as determined by the materials used or the creative methods involved (Clement Mok, 1990)
a particular form of storage for digitized information, such as magnetic tape or discs : moving or copying backed-up data through a hierarchy of different mediums.
a liquid (e.g., oil or water) with which pigments are mixed to make paint.• the material or form used by an artist, composer, or writer : oil paint is the most popular medium for glazing. (Dictionary Version 2.0.2 (51.4) © Copyright 2005-2007 Apple Inc.)
Function of Media
As a medium to convey ideas
CommunicationEg Road sign, Illustration, Menu
To visualize information
Types of Media
Conventional media (non digital)Cave painting -> chiaroscuro (Rembrandt)-> pointilism (Seurat) ->making marks(ancient Egypt) -> writing (Sumerian) ->Drawing word (Mayan) ->printing (Diamond Sutra – China) -> photography (1839 – Paul Delaroche – French artist – “From today painting is dead”.
Made up of 2 elements:The carrier, the thing that carries and holds information for storage and distribution purposes; light-sensitive film, paper etc.
The nature of information itself in an abstract way such as film, music, sound etc.
Elements of Media – The 5 senses
Vision and Sound: that are used for things at distance (attention grabber, attraction etc)
Smell (for real experience) will become a part of new media systems – cinema, museums etc.
Taste: it involves a more direct contact, limited to only a few areas of human activity (eg. sampling
Touch (1.texture; what things feel. 2. Shapes; build up idea of spatial form) eg. Braille, Manipulating objects in VR etc
(Barfield, 2004)
Types of Media in Context of Art
Dry mediaEg. Pencil, Charcoal, Pastel
Techniques: Shading, Cross hatching
Wet mediaEg. Oil paint, Acrylic, Water Color
Techniques: Under painting, dry brush
New Media Defined
“New media is multimedia combined with dynamic communication” eg. Internet, Broadcasting, Mobile phone etc.
Multimedia = multi + media = something that is composed than one medium
eg “pre historic cave dwellers of the approaching woolly mammoth and shouted “hey guys there’s a woolly mammoth coming over the hill” and points in the direction of the approaching beast.
This communication involving more than one medium (Visual sign and spoken word)
Design and Technology : The Challenge
The biggest challenge designers face in working with computing medium is not mastering the various technologies that are its constant companions, but introducing meaning and life into the products and services on the human side of the screen (Clement Mok, 1990)
