September Song - "Oh, it's a

long, long while From May to

December But the days grow

short When you reach

September...."

The name September comes from

the old Roman word 'septem', which means seven,

because in the Roman calendar it was the seventh month. The

Anglo-Saxons called it Gerst monath (Barley month), because it was

their time when they harvested barley to be made into their favorite

drink - barley brew. I know a few people who love, love, love that

"Barley Brew"!

"September Song" is an American pop standard composed by Kurt

Weill, with lyrics by Maxwell Anderson, introduced by Walter Huston

in the 1938 Broadway musical Knickerbocker Holiday. Bing Crosby rec-

orded the song twice, in 1943 and again in 1977 one month before his

death. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. have also rec-

orded versions. It was used in the 1950 film September Affair, and for

the credits in the television series (1989-1994) May to December.

Our recent event, Picnic In The Park, by all accounts I received was

a raging success! This is due to the organizational skills of Carol

Cook and the cooking skills of Don Bonnema and his amazing army of

chefs! There were many other hands that helped, and I wish to thank

you all!!! Yes, it was hot but Sugar House Park provided those

FOOD AND WINE GROUPS

GOURMET

Do you enjoy exploring new recipes, eating great meals and meeting

new friends? If so, Gourmet is the group for you.

In Gourmet-groups of people come together once a month to share a good meal.

This group usually meets on the first Saturday of the month. If the first Saturday of the month falls on a

holiday weekend, Gourmet is held on the second Saturday of the month.

As a participant of Gourmet you can expect to be a host home (for 8 or more people) at least once

during the season. The season runs from September through June.

Each month 2-3 hosts get together to plan a meal. The host prepares the entree and individuals attending

the dinner bring a menu item and their own beverage.

This is a fun group - if you are interested in learning more, please join us on for the season kick-off on

Sept 7th. Contact Sue and Jeff for more details.

Next Gourmet meets September 7th at 6:30pm.

CONNECTIONS FOR SINGLES

OUTING WITH MARILYN AND BETTY

We are going to Hogle Zoo to see the Lego exhibit of 30 animals which include

monkeys, snakes, birds, frogs, turtles and a giant Polar Bear – as well as the live

animals. The Lego exhibit is on loan from the Philadelphia Zoo until the end of September. It took a staff of

seven sculptors, architects, a geometric painter and mixed-media specialists 1,100 hours gluing together

Legos in a shape that almost brought the giant plastic Polar Bear to life. All the Lego animals are anatomically

correct.

We hope you can join us on this fun Fall Outing! We will have lunch at the Olive Garden.

Community Resources

Community Relations

We are very pleased that two of our Newcomers’ members were selected as Volunteers of the Year by

organizations they each support. Both women find great satisfaction and joy serving their community.

Karen Jurgens, a Newcomers’ member since 1985, was selected as Thanksgiving Point’s 2012 Volunteer of

the Year. This spring Karen was honored with Thanksgiving Point’s Heart and Hands Award for generous

volunteer services. Since 2011, Karen has logged more than 380 hours of volunteer time. Much of her

time is working with various children’s activities throughout the year. Karen is also a member of the volun-

teer advisory board as well as participates in the “Lead Volunteer” program. Recently Karen has added to

A huge “thank you” to our grill chefs—Gene, Lee, Jack, Bob, Hank, Rolf, Gordon, and Tom for their great

job. The 104 degree temperature didn’t stop them from tending the grills! Our thanks to Carol Cook,

Don Bonnema and their crew of organizers and to everyone who came to the picnic.

Edison Stanford Hearing Center Invites you to test drive remarkable new digital hearing instruments. This offer is

free of charge and you are under no obli-

gation. These revolutionary digital instruments

use the latest technology to comfortably

and almost invisibly help you hear more clearly. This new technology solves the

“stopped up ears” and “head in a barrel”

sensation some people experience.

Special testing will be done to deter-mine the increased benefits of this

technology.

Benefits of hearing aids vary by type and degree of hearing loss, noise,

environment, accuracy of hearing test,

and proper fit. This is a wonderful opportunity to determine if hearing

help is available for your hearing loss

while you evaluate your performance with this technology.

If you wish to participate you will be required to have your hearing tested in our

office free of charge to determine candida-

cy. Qualified individuals will then be placed on a two week test drive period.

At the end of this period, you may pur-

chase the instruments, if you desire, at a reduced charge. Otherwise, there is no

charge whatsoever for participating in this

promotion.

Recommended by Hank & Marilyn Merrill

Call now if you wish to be included in

this test drive promotion. Test drive

dates are available until June 30.

Gertrud Carpenter is home recovering from an operation on her middle toe. You know, the

one you would show someone who cut you off and both your hands were busy. Anyway, she

had it operated on because it was frankly, not her best feature. Unfortunately, as you can tell

from the attached photograph, she had two eyeballs implanted at the end of the toe, so you

probably don’t want to sit next to her. Let’s be honest here. It’s a little creepy having a toe

looking at you when you’re trying to think of something intelligent to say. We wish you a speedy recovery

Gertrud, and please, wear socks.
