Garlic. Where does it come from?Yes, the quick-witted amongst us will say, “the fruit & veg shops!”, and we’d all be chuckling… but I mean from where does garlic originate? Where does it grow wild?

It might be a common assumption to say that it comes from the Mediterranean area, but it was actually brought there from another area a long time ago. Research suggests that garlic originated in Central Asia and stretched from an area as wide as Western China through to India to Egypt and the Ukraine.

Interestingly, it is thought that garlic has been grown up to 10,000 years ago, shortly after the last Ice Age and semi-nomatic hunter-gatherers dispersed garlic throughout Central Asia. It is one of humankind’s earliest cultivated and traded crops. A 5750 year old garlic artefact was found in El Mahana in Egypt. Indian Sanskrit indicates dispersal of garlic 5000 years ago. And the Chinese may have been cultivating garlic 4000 years ago.

Today, wild garlic is really only found in Central Asia, centered around Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Fortunately for us, we need only travel to our local fruit & veg store to buy our garlic!

GOODNESS ME ORGANICS

Backyard bounty by Goodness Me OrganicsFresh Eggs, Cucumbers, Tomatos, Relish, Passionfruits, Plums… all shared by generous friends, family and neighbours in the last week. Nothing helps build a sense of community more than the sharing of homegrown and homemade. Handpicked juicy plums from a neighbour’s 2 abundantly fruitful backyard plum trees were unexpectedly delivered and brightened our day. Fruit and veg that may not be perfectly uniform but taste like they should.

I have clear memories of preserving jars in the kitchen cupboards, throwing kitchen scraps to the chooks, the delight of wriggling a carrot top in the garden and pulling it out, cracking macadamias in the vice in my grandpa’s shed and peeking under leaves looking for fresh strawberries to eat warm off the bush.

When did our food become so shrink wrapped and packaged up with long expiry dates? It’s easy to feel disconnected from food when it comes this way. I wonder if our children know if a plum grows on a tree and a carrot in the ground? Have they ever cracked a nut from it’s shell?

Discover the pleasure of eating real food close to the source. What simple goodness can you grow or bake to share?

Award winning vinegars, sauces, dressings and oils, as well as chutneys, relishes and pickles and a most irresistible sticky fig range.

The Importance of Being Earnest at Newcastle Theatre CompanyA glorious comedy of mistaken identity, which laughs at codes of moral propriety and rules of social etiquette. This production will move locale from foggy England to sunny NSW, in the late 1920s. The brilliance of Wilde’s dialogue and his memorable characters are all retained whilst presenting a unique opportunity to play up the Australian rivalry of ‘Town’ versus ‘The Bush’. Director Peter Trist has assembled a highly talented cast which combines stalwarts of Newcastle Theatre with some new faces.Oscar Wilde’s The Importance Of Being Earnest can be seen at 90 De Vitre St, Lampton between March 9 & 23. Performances are Wed, Fri, Sat nights at 8pm with Matinees on Sunday Mar 10 & Saturday Mar 16 at 2pm .

Newcastle BeachesNewcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port.Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether

Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round.

One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.

A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

A GROWING HuB FOR FASHION DESIGNERS Newcastle is developing a reputation as more than just a glorious coastline. Fashion designers who shun the large distribution channels and shopping centres that produce ‘sameness’ are popping up throughout the Newcastle CBD, joining forces with some of the more established designers who’ve called Newcastle home for many years. Explore the little known hubs in the City Centre and Darby Street precincts and open a conversation with Designers who operate their own Ateliers and Studios. You’ll be delighted by the true exclusivity, adventure and new fashioned service. To find out more about the city’s designers, visit www.newcastlenow.org.au

Art Bazaar starts 10th MarchThe Gallery and Lake Macquarie Council loved hosting last year’s event and are keen to build the crowd numbers year upon year. Enjoy a great day out in the gallery grounds while taking in the beautiful lake views.

Art Bazaar features a variety of premium handmade products from over 100 local Hunter Arts Network (HAN) artists including fashion, jewellery, accessories, fine art, photography, sculptures & homewares. HAN is a non-profit membership of Artists, Designers, Jewellers and craft people from the Hunter region.

2013 is the second year of seasonal Art Bazaars which has stimulated the arts community and increased public awareness of the Hunter’s diverse artistic culture, successfully displaying the many individuals, groups, organisations and businesses.

The Hunter's premier artisan & design marketplace, Art Bazaar, is the ideal platform for the community to invest in locally produced visual arts, craft & design, including professional practitioners, who will have their work showcased in a supportive and creative atmosphere.

Shoppers will enjoy meeting the artists & designers who have carefully created for the reputable event providing access beyond the boundaries of the gallery. The warm & friendly setting allows for stallholders to always be approachable to chat about their work. It is an affordable opportunity for both the public & the creative people of Newcastle & the Hunter. Enjoy the atmosphere of a world class Gallery and meet the Artisans of the Hunter.

"Newcastle has a fantastic art scene however not everyone will enter galleries, so Art Bazaar provides the perfect setting for people to see established and emerging Artists in a great environment" said Leah Fawthrop, President of HAN. "Our Artisans practice in a variety of mediums and we also include designers - originality, quality and variety is the key to HAN membership."

Art Bazaars are FREE entry & there also will be demonstrations, loads of parking, food/drinks & ATM's.

Bring your family along, enjoy inexpensive children’s art activities in the gallery and a barbeque lunch prepared by the Gallery Society. All

funds raised by the Gallery Society go towards the purchase of artworks for the gallery’s collection.

Art Bazaar Major Sponsor is Moray and Agnew Lawyers.

March: Summer displaysYou probably have noticed the brilliant purple flowers of the Tibouchina just starting to emerge. They are an excellent display in the garden from now until winter starts to set in. Check your local nursery as there are some new varieties available to choose from. Now is a good time for planting. Most of your bulbs can be planted now to enable you to have lots of flowers in late winter and early spring.A good soil for growing bulbs is a Rich Organic soil that is rich in humus. You can add some compost, and or some slow release fertilizer just below the base of each bulb to kick start it however keep the ground around the bulb quite firm, finishing with a light water. Make sure you have installed adequate drainage so as not to encourage rot to set in. Drainage in your garden or lawn can be a major factor in the long term success of any gardening project. If planting a vegetable garden prepare your soil before planting by digging in some Blood & Bone or Cow manure, or if you are just starting out, some Rich Organic Garden Soil. This will promote premium plant growth.Lee Rowan's Gardenworld Pacific Hwy, Heatherbrae. Ph 02 4987 2302 www.leerowans.com.au

Cessnock & Kurri KurriLindeman's, Hunter Valley

Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast.

Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years.

Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular.

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

What to see and do in Kurri Kurri■ Kurri Kurri is famous for its murals, which are a wonderful expression of the region’s history. Tours are available all year round. Kurri Kurri is the biggest mural town in Australia. Don’t forget to look for the Kookaburra in every mural – some are quite hard to find. To book a tour contact the VIC on 4936 1909.

■ Richmond Vale Railway Museum runs trains on the first three Sundays of each month from 10am.

■ Kurri Kurri farmer’s market is held the second Saturday of each month.

MARKED: DRAWING NOW, at the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery until 24th March, is a sensational exhibition by thirty artists with strong connections to the Hunter Region.

The exhibition presents the many different directions that drawing, the most ancient and intimate of art forms, is taking in the early 21st century. In addition there will be works by sculptors Dani Marti and Jenny Herbert-Smith.

This is a very exciting exhibition that brings together the exceptional talents of some of Australia's most highly acclaimed artists, in company with young and emerging artists who are at the start of hugely promising careers.

Archibald Prize winner Janet Dawson

shows works alongside recent art school graduates Ben Kenning, Michelle Gearin and James Drinkwater while the challenging works of Sulman Prize winner and Archibald runner-up Nigel Milsom share the space with Michael Bell and rising stars Brett McMahon and Peter Gardiner.

Drawings by Dobell Prize finalists like Gino Palmieri sit alongside the minimal perfection of Ahn Wells and Bruce Roxbugh in brilliant contrast to the expressionistic vigour of Tash Wills and Suzannah Jones.

This is an amazingly strong exhibition that should delight and enthrall everyone who has ever held a pencil.  Entry to the gallery is free.

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style.

It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place.

Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town.

You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth.

A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the

finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking.

Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town.

Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's most notorious criminals.

Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

What to See & Do■ Morpeth is National Trust classified, so take one of the Heritage Walks - enjoy the colorful history of Morpeth and its characters - in a living museum of Australia’s past.

■ The streets of Morpeth are home to over 40 specialty shops and boutiques. Browse the gift shops, antique shops, galleries, lolly shops, a tea house, ginger beer factory and bakery.

■ Visit the Morpeth Museum housed in the old Court House built in 1862.

Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford

Tocal Road, PatersonPh: 4939 8901 w/days; 4939 8939 w/ends

Open every weekend from March to Nov 30th 10am – 3pm. When you visit Tocal Homestead its not hard to imagine days gone by. Tales of architects and graziers, bushrangers, businessmen, social reform and philanthropy are woven through the highs and lows of life on this unique property.

There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.

Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops.

First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for

weddings and milestone celebrations.

Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style.

9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops.

Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook.

MOuTAIN BIKE GRAND PRIX Fast n Furious – 20th AprilJames Estate Winery on the Bylong Valley Way is the venue for Round 2 of the Rocky Trail Shimano Mountain Bike Grand Prix. Between 200 and 300 super fit riders will gather at the beautiful Estate near Sandy Hollow to test their skills to the limit over the Fast 4-hour or the Furious 7-Hour Races. Both are endurance events with competitors entering as individual participants or in relay teams.  The trail is a fairly recent addition to the wonders of James Estate which backs on to the rugged Wollemi National Park in the Upper hunter Region in New South Wales. Estate manager, Graeme Scott who is a mad keen Mountain Biker said he was thrilled that the Grand Prix had come to the area. Both male and female riders compete in the series. They come from throughout NSW and interstate with some expected to travel

from the Northern Territory.

Whilst most riders compete for personal satisfaction and to test their pain barrier, there are a number of elite riders looking to take home some prize money for their efforts.

The Grand Prix is a series of five races at various locations throughout NSW and ACT with the final races being held in the Stromlo Forest near Canberra in September this year.

Round 2 at James Estate provides a great opportunity for locals and visitors to see Mountain Biking action up close and personal. Food, refreshments and great coffee will be available and of course world class wines on the spot for tasting at the Cellar Door throughout the day.

Mountain Bikers are always welcome to test out the James Estate Trail all year round.
