Garlic, glorious garlic!Australian Garlic is now in season and gloriously on the shelves! If you’re a garlic lover, then you’ll be salivating at the opportunity of indulging. What to look for in your garlic? Obviously, flavour is the most important factor. But it’s hard to taste when it’s on the fruit & veg shop, right? So, look for garlic that’s grown in Australia because it will be without chemicals like methyl bromide or bleaching, which takes out the flavour. Then, look for the organically grown garlic because it will be naturally more flavoursome. Garlic should be hard and dry. Any softness means it is rotting and not fit for consumption.Size is not so important. Bigger is not necessarily better. After all, you’ll probably chop the garlic cloves into little pieces before cooking. So, even if garlic is as small as a grape, it’s fine.Lastly, different varieties will have different flavours and strengths. For example, our Red variety has a stronger flavour and is best for mixing in with cooking. Alternatively, our Grande variety is milder in flavour and is great for roasting and eating whole. So, get going with garlic! Enjoy while you can as it runs out mid-year. GOODNESS ME ORGANICS

Fruitful Advice from Goodness Me OrganicsOver 3 years ago when we began the landscaping part of our renovations we found a lone kiwi plant. Maree McCarthy from Nature’s Magic Garden Designs had some helpful advice for us that has finally born fruit.

Kiwi fruit or Chinese Gooseberries grow on a vine and require a male and a female plant for pollination. Maree suggested we build an overhead timber trellis for the vines to grow on and fruit to hang down as an attractive and fruitful addition to our garden. We built the trellis, bought both Mr and Mrs Kiwi plant (being unsure exactly what gender our lone plant was) and left the 3 plants to harmoniously cohabitate with very little interference from us.

Recently we have been delighted to spot tiny fuzzy balls of fruit and are at last rewarded for our long patience. They are too small to do anything except watch them grow but we are looking forward to sampling their bright green goodness!

Specialty Beers on TapThe Morpeth Brewery & Beer Co. microbrewery is located at the Commercial Hotel Morpeth: 127 Swan St Morpeth. At Morpeth Brewery & Beer Co we are passionate about brewing according to artisan principles, and aspire to produce all natural beers from the finest quality ingredients free of additives or preservatives and without resorting to filtration, added flocculants or forced-carbonation. Newcastle BeachesNewcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port.Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether

Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.

A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

Lake Macquarie’s sea caves have been popular amongst locals and visitors in-the-know for decades, but the ‘caves’ are officially out of the bag this summer after being voted into a list of Australia’s ‘Top 40 Secret Spots’.

The competition was run through Facebook by Hooroo.com, a travel website owned by Qantas. Hooroo called for nominations from people around Australia; entries were then narrowed down to the final top 40 by a panel of judges, including Bondi Vet’s Chris Brown.

The winning sea caves are located

at the southern end of Caves Beach, a popular patrolled beach great for families and surfing. The caves are best accessible on a low tide, when visitors can fully explore these rocky natural attractions. Kids will especially love running through the rock tunnel and exploring the formations and tidal pools surrounding the caves.

Resort and self-contained style accommodation is available in Caves Beach, while motel and tourist park options are located in the nearby town centre of Swansea. For more information on visiting Caves Beach, and a free Lake Macquarie Visitor Information Kit, contact the Lake Macquarie Visitor Information Centre, Phone: 1800 802 044, Email: [email protected] or visit www.visitlakemac.com.au

With its unique mix of bush, beach and lake environments, Lake Macquarie is fast becoming a summer haven for families looking to avoid the crowds of busier North Coast holiday destinations.

A stay at Lake Macquarie, or ‘Lake Mac’ as the locals know it, offers visitors the chance to experience the relaxed coastal lifestyle that so many Australians dream of. Time spent at Lake Macquarie is reminiscent of good old-fashioned seaside holidays. Visit a few of the diverse townships in the area and get a taste of the laidback lake lifestyle. Create your own fun fishing, bushwalking or even just building a sandcastle on the beach.

Drop a line from one of the quality fishing spots, or hire a boat and spend the day on the water. Swansea Channel and the area off Marks Point

(known as The Drop Over) generate good catches of Flathead, Bream, Whiting, Jewfish, and Tailor. Visiting game fishers will delight in the Big Fish Bonanza tournament, held on the first weekend of February.

Lake Macquarie is home to countless walking trails, many with water views. For a scenic outlook not to be missed, hike to the summit of Mt Sugarloaf and take in amazing vistas of the lake and surrounding Hunter regions.

Catherine Hill Bay is a historic mining village that has been largely untouched since its development in the 1800s. Stay in a revamped cottage and enjoy the pristine patrolled beach, decorated by the heritage coal-loading jetty. Catherine Hill Bay is particularly popular with divers and surfers.

Gartelmann WinesGartelmann Wines is a boutique winery set in the heart of Lovedale. Founded in 1996 by Jorg and Jan Gartelmann, we specialise in hand crafted wines sourced from the best sites in regional New South Wales.

There’s much more to Gartelmann Wines than the classic Hunter varieties of Semillon and Shiraz – although they are justifiably proud of their award-winning examples of both. Try the aromatic Verdelho, complex Chardonnay, soft Merlot and elegant Cabernet, before moving on to the toffee-citrus sweetness of our dessert Ambrosia or the toasty spice of the Liqueur Muscat.

Come and enjoy a wine tasting in the cool of the Cellar Door or on the sun-dappled deck, or relax at the Magpie Café by the lily-covered pond.

The Magpie Café is open 9am and 4pm Fri - Mon for coffee and light lunches, including fresh salads, cheese and antipasto plates, pies, and quiches.

Gartelmann Wines is a true family owned and operated winery – Jan and Jorg can often be found in the Cellar Door welcoming guests and answering questions. They look forward to meeting you!

Cessnock & Kurri KurriKurri Kurri Mural - 'Bullocky'

Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast.

Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years.

Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular.

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

TRAIL OF ART, at the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery until February 24th 2013, is a multi-dimensional exhibition that showcases the combined talents of eighteen local professional artists who together form the Art Trail network.

This community of painters, jewelers, printmakers, glassblowers, silversmiths and ceramicists stretches across the Lower Hunter Valley from Rothbury to Ellalong. They recently joined forces to create a linked trail of open art studios across the Valley’s vineyards.

The Lower Hunter Art Trail presents an opportunity to experience the vast range of processes and techniques that

they have developed over many years of full-time professional arts practice.

Artists in Trail of Art include well known regional painters, Diana Baker, Megan Barrass, Dorothy Compton, Les Elvin, Chris and Frances Fussell, Julie Lau, Sue Linton, Sally Matthews, Peter Sesselmann, Dorothy Wishney, Ann Grace-Smith and Karen Malmgren along with ceramicist Adrienne Crouch, textile artist Alison Green, jeweller Gabby Horvath, glassblower Setsuko Ogishi and printmaker Rebecca Rath.

This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see such a diverse collection of work in the one gallery space. Free Entry. All Welcome. Works for Sale

Summer StocK arriving weekly!

The countdown is on, cars are being polished, last minute dance rehearsals are in full swing, the 50's gear is pressed and ironed... All ready for the 10th celebration of the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival.

It’s been 10 years since a group of volunteers decided a classic car and rock n roll event would help draw visitors to Kurri Kurri. I’m sure they never imagined that 10 years later this festival would be one of the biggest in the nation, welcoming interstate and international visitors, receiving rave reviews and attracting over 40,000 people to the region.

It’s not like any other festival, says event director Jodi Tweed “you really do feel like you’ve stepped back in time”.

The colour, costumes, cars and charisma of the event sets it apart, with events

and activities for the whole family. The Saturday and Sunday of the event is held in the town centre of Kurri Kurri, hundreds of classic cars line the streets and the multiple stages keep everyone entertained with plenty of opportunities to be dancing in the street. There’s retro fashion parades, best dressed competitions, Vegas wedding, famous fifties showcase, sideshow alley and lots more.

For the real enthusiasts we have ticketed events in the evenings across many venues and to celebrate this anniversary we have the Delltones live in concert.

Polish your car, press your dress and shine your shoes, we’re bringing back the good times. For tickets visit www.stickytickets.com.au and for the full event program www.kurrikurrinostalgiafestival.com.au

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style.

It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place.

Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town.

You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth.

A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the

finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking.

Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town.

Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's most notorious criminals.

Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

What to See & Do■ Morpeth is National Trust classified, so take one of the Heritage Walks - enjoy the colorful history of Morpeth and its characters - in a living museum of Australia’s past.

■ The streets of Morpeth are home to over 40 specialty shops and boutiques. Browse the gift shops, antique shops, galleries, lolly shops, a tea house, ginger beer factory and bakery.

■ Visit the Morpeth Museum housed in the old Court House built in 1862.

Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford

Tocal Road, PatersonPh: 4939 8901 w/days; 4939 8939 w/ends

Open every weekend from March to Nov 30th 10am – 3pm. When you visit Tocal Homestead its not hard to imagine days gone by. Tales of architects and graziers, bushrangers, businessmen, social reform and philanthropy are woven through the highs and lows of life on this unique property.

There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.

Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops.

First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for

weddings and milestone celebrations.

Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style.

9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops.

Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook.

Good roads, great scenery, wonderful people and something fresh around every corner; that’s the promise of the all the exciting drives inland from Newcastle. As the options are unlimited, we don’t have the space to tell you about them all in this issue of the Hunter Imag. So, we will just give you a few ideas for you to explore and new lands to discover. Some are day trips; others can take as long as you like. We know some folk who left home two years ago and just kept going. Head west into the sunset, turn left to go south or go right for a northern exposure.

Hunter Country in the top end of the Valley – wine and horses; majestic mountains and beautiful lakes. www.upperhuntercountry.com

On the edge of the Wollemi National Park and through the Goulburn River Park, to Bylong, home of the world famous Mouse Races; on to Rylstone and Kandos, Capertee and Lithgow and the fabulous Blue Mountains. Or just keep going south

through Oberon on the Tablelands Way. www.bylongvalleyway.com.au

Trip No. 4: Port Stephens Cutting Along the New England Highway, north through Murrurundi to Nundle, then east from Dungowan over the Port Stephens Cutting; pick up Thunderbolts Way and southwards back to Newcastle through Barrington Tops country via Gloucester and Dungog. If you have never been up the Dungowan Valley, we can guarantee a memory to last a lifetime. Just glorious ! www.new-england-hway.com.au

If you live in the Hunter or have just got off the plane at Newcastle Airport, there is always an open invitation to come and say “G’day” out west, up north or down south. There is excellent accommodation and lots of places to eat along the way; or you can bring the van or the tent and do it in style.
