Newbiggin by the Sea ART TRAIL Newbiggin by the Sea has a thriving artistic community and a rich variety of artworks to explore. ”Couple” by Sean Henry may be our most famous but take this walk around the village and you will discover many, many more. Stone carvings, ceramic panels, stained glass windows & community sculpture can all be found on the trail. Many of the artworks featured have been produced by artists living and working in the village. The entire trail will take about two hours but it can be enjoyed in shorter sections Conceived, designed and produced by KEAP Creative. Correct at time of going to press. KEAP Creative is a not for profit Social Enterprise whose aim is to develop the arts in and around Newbiggin by the Sea. 56. The final piece at the other side of the Leisure Centre reflects the games and sports played here and is known as “Lost & Found”. 57. In the Leisure Centre you will find “NE64 - A Field For Newbiggin” installed in the quadrangle. A community project comprised of 325 ceramic pieces symbolising cobles, coalmines and Newbiggin Bay, it was undertaken by over 300 people of all ages in the Summer of 2008 and led by KEAP Creative artists. 58. One Day For Newbigin is another community project, led by Newbiggin Arts Forum Photography Group, and on display in the Leisure Centre. All photographs were taken on August 19th 2007 and provided a snapshot of Newbiggin life. 61. Gateway. Moving up Woodhorn Road out of Newbiggin you come across the Newbiggin Gateway, an architectural construction containing mosaics and a salmon sculpture. There are public toilets available in the Leisure Centre. 55. Moving back in the direction of the sea you come to another piece that depicts the former colliery with various sacks of coal. This is called “Coal For Your Cree”. 59.60. Sea Studies. Across the road at 79 Woodlea there are two more Panels. 50. The third, further down Central Parkway on the right is Fairy Hill - a snowman, sledge and footprints. This is “The All Weather Sledge”. 49. The second (on the right of the road) is a bicycle with a basket of fish. This is called “The Delivery Boy”. 51. Newbiggin by the Sea has a thriving artisticcommunity and a rich variety of artworks to explore. ”Couple” by Sean Henry may be our most famous but take this walk around thevillage and you will discover many, many more. 13. Inshore. Turn into the passage on the left before the Fruit shop to fi nd another panel

29.30.31. Three Sea Studies are on the wallbeyond the MemorialGarden in the passage on your left to Aqua Terrace.

27. Dove. Go back to Front Street and walk right towards the west end of thevillage. The Methodist Church wall on your left has another Newbiggin Panel.

28. Puffi n. Further along Front Street to your right on the vicarage wall you will see another

Newbiggin Panel.

L.G. Leave the Church Centre turn right and then fi rst right up Woodhorn Road to The Little Gem Gallery on your right. It opens each Saturday from 10am to 4pm and each Sunday

from 12pm until 4pm.

26. Across the road in St. Bartholomew’s Church Centre, open on Saturday mornings, is a woven

tapestry, Forest, by Alison Wood and members of the community.

35. Angry Sea Flights. A set of three panels on the promenade to your right.

36. Angry Seas. Slightly further along are three more panels.

41.42. Soaring Flight. Sea Storms. There are two more panel sets that are on the gable ends of houses at the far end

of Melrose Terrace & MeldonTerrace and are accessed by continuing to walk along the promenade and then going up

towards the far end of Beach Terrace to turn right.

Go down the Horsehoe Steps onto the promenade. Along the promenade to your right you will fi nd six more pieces.

43. Thermals. Return along the promenade back past the Horseshoe Steps. There is another panel on your left.

48. Walk back to the Horseshoe Steps and go up the steps into Windsor Road. Then turn right onto Gibson Street. On your left isCentral Parkway leading to Central Park in which there are nine Peak Moor sandstone carved boulder sculptures by GraemeMitcheson (who is originally from Newbiggin)

from ideas by local children. Each sculpture contains a local reference giving the various areas their own identity. On the left of the road on the site of the old railway station is “Waiting for the Train That Never Comes”.

3. East Window. Walk from the Maritime Centre to St. Bartholomew’s Church. The east

stained glass window is by Stanley Murray Scott.

4. Church Point. Turn right from thechurch and go up past the Maritime Centre to the Cresswell Arms. A painting of Church Point by Arthur Young from the 1950s can be found on the chimney breast of the Bar.

5. Coble. Cross over the road and walk down Sandridge and right to the rear of CobleCottage where there is a Newbiggin Panel - one of a series by Newbiggin artists KEAP Creative.

7. Couple, by Sean Henry, the fi rst permanent offshore sculpture in the UK, can be seen to your left on the

breakwater in the bay.

6. Land Couple. Walk down Bay View East towards the sea. Turn right at the Lifeboat Station and continue along the promenade. On your right in the gardens at Vernon Place is Land Couple by Sean Henry.

9. Newbiggin Totems. Walk back to the gardens now on your left and go through to

Vernon Place and then Robinson Square where you will fi nd a fl ower bed with Five

Totems by KEAP Creative.

11.12. Seagull. Bay. Turn left into Front Street. Facing you

on the side of number 105 are two more of KEAP Creative’s

Newbiggin Panels.

If you are visiting Newbiggin by car you can park in Church Point car park next to the Maritime Centre

1. The Newbiggin Art Trail starts at the entrance.

14.15.Small Gulls. Gulls. Continue along Front Street and turn left at Seaview Terrace where you will fi nd two more Newbiggin panels.

19. The Newbiggin Ceramic Panel, by Peter Seddon, is on the wall outside the Coble Inn. This was the fi rst piece to be

produced in the development of the Newbiggin Art Trail.

16.17.18. Walk along the promenade to The Piazza. On the wall of the Sailing

Club are copies of three paintings by Giuliana Lazzerini. The fi rst depicts

20.21. Walk back onto the promenade and turn right past The Old Ship where you will fi nd two Newbiggin Coblefi sh above the bay windows.

22. Walk down the side of The Old Ship to see The Newbiggin Sea Panels high

on the right 47. Storm. Yet another panel on the left further along the promenade.

46. The Sound of Newbiggin. Another panel further along the promenade on your left.

Safe Haven. You may discover small fi gures at various places along theseafront between the Horseshoe Steps and The Old Ship.

2 . Go to the entrance of the viewing platform, accessed from the car park, where you will see The Peace Tree by KEAP Creative.

10. On the left wall is a ceramic panel. Jonathon Livingston Seagull is Alive & Well & Living in Newbiggin by the Sea.

8. Further along thepromenade on your right is a mural painted by members of the community.

Newbiggin Boatyard. The second is Three Sailing Boats in Newbiggin Bay. Newbiggin Cottages is

the subject of the third. The original paintings are inside the Sailing Club.
