Lenten Bible Study: Led by: Pastor Patience Kisakye The Cross and the Lynching Tree!

Description:

"The Cross and the Lynching Tree" provides both a relevant Lenten study and a timely reflection on

racism. It is also a theological work that provides deep insights into what our primary Christian symbol

really means and how the paradox of the cross informs our faith and contemporary experience. The class will use the Lenten Study Guide for "The Cross and the Lynching Tree" by Dr. James Cone.

The companion book, "The Cross and the Lynching Tree", is available for purchase through online booksellers. It is suggested reading, but not required for the class.

“They put him to death by hanging him on a tree.” (Acts 10:39).This “powerful and painful song for hope” is a perfect fit for Lent!

When: Thursdays, March 5 - April 2nd, 7:00 PM - 8:00PM

Location: Newark United Methodist Church, Lounge Cost: $10.00 (Cost for study guide)

MARCH 1, 2020

The Lent and Easter story raises many intri-guing questions about faith, belief and hope. Every year together with other Christians around the world, we enter into the dramatic narrative of Lent, Holy Week and Easter. We journey with Jesus to the Cross and rejoice in His glorious resurrection. From entering into this story we can find hope in times of des-pair, light in times of darkness and confidence in the power of love to overcome all things. We are graced with time to reflect on the questions of life and experience the awe and wonder of worshipping in this amazing space built as a witness to the life, death and resur-rection of Jesus Christ. Let us be intentional in inviting a friend, neighbor, stranger, family members to come and experience the Jesus story at the heart of the foundation of our faith. From Ash Wednesday, February 26th until Easter Eve Saturday, April 11th , we will join Christians around the world in the season of Lent – a time of reflection, penitence and so-lemnity – as we recall the momentous events leading to Jesus’ betrayal, imprisonment, tor-ture, and crucifixion on Good Friday. Then on Easter Day Sunday, April 12th, sorrow turns to joy as we celebrate the wonder of Christ’s resurrection and lay claim on our resurrec-tion experience! Our congregation and community services and events for Lent through Easter will take place as follows: Monday, February 24th – The positioning of the Cross for Lent and Easter. The Cross, the central symbol of the Christian faith, will be positioned in the sanctuary. It will be in the Sanctuary from Ash Wednesday until the Feast of Pentecost. Wednesday, February 26th - Ash Wednes-day - Imposition of the Ashes at 7pm. We wel-come all to receive the sign of the cross marked in ash on their foreheads as a remind-er of our mortality and of our sharing of death in Christ.

Pastor’s Corner—Lent, Holy Week and Easter at our Church!

Silence prayer and meditation in the Sanc-tuary: Thursdays during Lent – from March 5th until April, 2nd 9am - noon. We invite you to bring a friend to experience the gift of si-lence. This gift has the potential to transform lives in a busy world. Each weekly Sunday bulletin will have a paragraph on how to use silence, drawing on the deep well of re-sources and experiences in the Christian con-templative tradition, to help you engage peri-ods of silent meditation on the stations of the Cross. Silence in the Sanctuary will conclude at noon. Fridays during Lent – 28, February, 6, 13, 20, 27 March and 3 April, 12:00 noon medita-tions will be offered by Newark Clergy please see pg. 3 for times and locations: On Saturday March 28th , Paul Cruz, from New York City, will join us as we celebrate The Messiah in the Passover around a dish to pass at 12 noon, in the Fellowship Hall. Included in this Newsletter is Paul Cruz’s bio. Let us give him a Newark FUMC welcome as he leads us in understanding the relationship between the Jewish Passover and the Lord’s Supper. This event will last about an hour and half. On Palm Sunday April 5th, we will hold one service at 10:00am. The service will begin with Procession and Palm branches including 30 pieces of silver (Judas Iscariot’s reward for his betrayal of Jesus), a crown of thorns and three nails and a length of material represent-ing Jesus’ burial cloth. Maundy Thursday April 8th, at 7pm we will commemorate the Supper Jesus shared with his disciples before His crucifixion, when Je-sus washed the disciples feet and instituted the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. The Choir will lead us in singing the office of Tenebrae, recalling the gathering darkness as we move towards Good Friday. Good Friday – April 10th , at 7pm We will gather around Bible readings from St John’s Gospel, prayers and singing of the passion.

At Easter on April 12th, the tomb will be opened and illu-minated and the garden fes-tooned with flowers to cele-brate Jesus’ resurrection. The garden will be blessed during the vigil. The Easter Garden will be in the Sanctuary from Palm Sunday (April 5th) until Ascension Day (May 21st).

Scout Sunday 2020

Thank you to everyone for welcoming us to Scout Sunday on February 19. It was a chilly morning with no heat in the church but I think we managed pretty well in the Chapel! The scouts did very well with the portions of the service they were assigned.

Our small but strong group keeps marching towards the path to Eagle. This month (March) we will have three scouts celebrating the transition from Life to Eagle Scout. We hope to see some of the members of the church in attendance at this celebration for these three young men.

The last weekend in February we will be camping at Cutler, hopefully it is warm, and are continually looking for new camping opportunities. We have two scouts who just recently joined us and are already working on the steady march toward Eagle. As the weather warms more you should see us out and about more.
