Sometime i n 1965 , I r e c e i v e d a l e t t e r f r o m a N . Z . P o l i c e o f f i c e r w i t h aDutch name, a n d s t a t i o n e d a t P o r i r u a , a s k i n g f o r f u r t h e r a d v i c e , a n d "howt h i n g s were done i n H o l l a n d " . N e e d l e s s t o s a y I have g i v e n h i m t h e mosti n f o r m a t i v e a d v i s e p o s s i b l e , a n d s i n c e t h e n I ' v e h e a r d f r o m h i m , w i t h t h ep l e a s i n g news t h a t New Zea land has now f i n a l l y suceeeded i n s e t t i n g u p an a t i o n a l s e c t i o n . One s u c h i n c i d e n t , n o d o u b t known t o some o f o u r I PA members i n Pa lmers tonNor th , r e l a t e s t o a c h a r a c t e r b y t h e name o f Joe PAWELKA.

I n 1910, t h i s man, who h a d escaped f r o m p r i s o n i n W e l l i n g t o n , t e r r o r i s e dthe people. o f Pa lmers ton Nor th . . T h e r e was a E100 reward o f f e r e d f o r h i sa r r e s t a n d i n a d d i t i o n - t o t h e . 6 0 o r more po l i cemen t h e r e were many o t h e r s whotook a most a c t i v e p a r t i n s e a r c h i n g f o r h i m .

A man and h i s w i f e were c o n f r o n t e d one d a y a t t h e i r home b y a masked manwho h e l d a r e v o l v e r i n each hand . T h e man d i d n o t h e s i t a t e t o u s e one o f h i sweapons when he f i r e d o v e r t h e heads o f t h e s e p e o p l e d u r i n g t h e c o u r s e o frobb ing them.

Palmerston N o r t h H i g h S c h o o l and s e v e r a l o t h e r b u i l d i n g s were b a d l ydamaged b y f i r e . P a w e l k a was s t i l l a t l a r g e and s t r o n g l y suspec ted o f b e i n gr e s p o n s i b l e f o r t h e s e i n c i d e n t s . T h e r e were s e v e r a l r e p o r t s o f PAWELKAlshav ing been seen i n P a h i a t u a and A s h h u r s t . O n e o f t h e s e r e p o r t s was d e a l tw i t h b y Sergeant J . P. R . MAGUIRE and D e t e c t i v e A . G .QUARTERNAIN. T h e y wentt o a p r o p e r t y a t n i g h t , w h e r e i t was r e p o r t e d t h a t a man had been c r e e p i n ground t h e s e c t i o n . O n t h e i r a r r i v a l a man was seen and approached. As t r u g g l e s t a r t e d and a s h o t was f i r e d w h i c h r e s u l t e d i n Sergean t MAGUIREbe ing c r i t i c a l l y i n j u r e d . A f e w d a y s l a t e r he d i e d .

The t h r e e weeks o f t e r r o r was b r o u g h t . t o a c l o s e when a p a r t y o f P o l i c ec losed i n on PAWELKA i n a h a y l o f t a t A s h h u r s t . O n h i s a r r e s t h e had w i t hhim t w o l o a d e d r e v o l v e r s , a q u a n t i t y o f —ammunition and s e v e r a l d e t o n a t o r s .Though handcu f fed t o a c o n s t a b l e o n each s i d e and accompanied b y two s e r g e a n t st h i s desperado h a d t h e n e r v e t o make a n escape b i d f r o m t h e P o l i c e o a r .

At Supreme C o u r t t h e j u r y r e t u r n e d a v e r d i c t o f n o t g u i l t y t o t h e murde ro f Sergean t MAGUIRE, a s t h e r e was n o t s u f f i c i e n t e v i d e n c e t o show who f i r e dthe f a t a l s h o t . T h e r e was a l o n g s t r i n g o f o t h e r cha rges f o r w h i c h t h i s manhad t o answer. M u c h o f t h e e v i d e n c e i n t h e de fended a r s o n cha rge r e s t e d o nf i n g e r p r i n t s . W h e n s e n t e n c e was f i n a l l y p a s s e d , M r J u s t i c e COOPER gave h i mt h r e e c u m u l a t i v e p e r i o d s - o g seven y e a r s a n d d e c l a r e d h i m a h a b i t u a l c r i m i n a l , .

Meanwhile, b a c k i n London, J o s e p h i n e h a d been b u s y w i t h i n s u r a n c e andbook ings f o r o u r c o n t i n e n t a l t r i p , a n d t w o d a y s a f t e r I was d i s c h a r g e d f r o mh o s p i t a l we were c r o s s i n g t h e Channe l , d e s p i t e t h e seamen's s t r i k e . W et h o r o u g h l y e n j o y e d o u r t o u r a round B r i t a i n and made many f r i e n d s whom we hopew i l l some d a y v i s i t t h e i r " C o l o n i a l " c o u n t e r p a r t s .
