For every dollar spent in all justice sectors, 61% is allocated to policing.

In 2007, police services saw the second largest annual increase in the number of police officers in the past 30 years in Canada. There were over 64,000 police officers in Canada in 2007, a 2.7% increase from the previous year.

Salaries, wages and benefits make up about 80% of policing operating expenditures

Despite recent increases, police officer strength has remained relatively stable over the past 30 years. In 2007, the rate of 195 officers per 100,000 population was 5% lower than the peak of 206 reached in 1975.

Approximately 77 per cent of Canadians live in communities served by municipal stand-alone police departments, while 15 per cent live in communities served by RCMP-contract officers, 6.5 per cent in communities with provincial police force protection, and 0.51 per cent of Canadians are served by First Nations police.
