This increase was slightly lower than that of the previous year (+1.2% in 2012/2013) but similar to the average annual population increase for the last 30 years (+1.1%). Except for the period between 1986/1987 and 1989/1990, when rates were higher, the overall population growth rate has shown little varia- tion in 30 years, ranging between 0.8% and 1.2%. Canada's population growth is the highest among G7 countries For the most recent comparable annual period (see the note to readers), Canada's population growth rate (+1.1%) was the highest among the G7 countries, exceeding that of the United States (+0.7%), the United Kingdom (+0.6%), France (+0.4%), Germany (+0.3%), Italy (+0.1%) and Japan (- 0.2%). Canada's population growth rate was not, however, the highest among industrialized countries; for example, it was lower than the rates recorded in Australia (+1.7%), New Zealand (+1.5%) and Swit- zerland (+1.2%). Population growth remains higher in the Prairie provinces and Nunavut Population growth varied among the provinces and territories. Growth was above the national level (+1.1%) in Nunavut (+3.2%), Alberta (+2.8%), Saskatchewan (+1.7%) and Manitoba (+1.3%). Popu- lation growth changed from positive in 2012/2013 to negative in 2013/2014 in the Northwest Territories (from +0.5% to -0.5%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (from +0.3% to -0.2%). On the other hand, growth increased markedly in Nunavut (from +2.0% to +3.2%) and Prince Edward Island (from +0.2% to +0.5%) in 2013/2014 compared with the previous year. NEW YORK: (PTI) A delegation of Sikh-Americans has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove the hurdles faced by them while applying for visas or renewal of passports, particularly by those who had applied for political asylum in 1980s. "The NRI Sikh community feels alienated as Indian Embassies refuse them visas or do not renew their passports depriving them to visit their families and take care of their investment in India because they applied for political asylums during the turbulent times in Punjab," a 29-member delegation of the Sikh-American community said in a memorandum to the Prime Minister yesterday. "We are hopeful that the Prime Minister would consider our request," said Jasdip Jesse Singh, who led the delegation. The hour-long meeting discussed various other issues faced by the Sikh community. "It was a historical visit as NRI Sikh delegation met any visiting PM from India after decades. Modi has renewed faith and hope in the NRI Sikh community that there issues as mentioned in the memorandum will be resolved," Singh said. ON PAGE 13 Indian Muslims will fail Al Qaeda: Modi New York, (IANS) Terrorism has been exported to India and it is not home-grown, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here Monday, adding that the Indian Muslims will fail the Al Qaeda. Answering a query at the Council of Foreign Relations here, Modi said India has the second largest Muslim population in the world. He said India's basic philosophy of non-violence drives everyone -- the philoso- phy of Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi. "We are bothered by terrorism... it has been exported to our country, it is not home grown. The Muslims in India, CNN had asked about it, India's Muslims will fail the Al Qaeda," he asserted. Terrorism is the enemy of humanity and anyone who believes in hu- manity should come together to challenge the great danger of humanity, Modi said in answer to another question. The prime minister said India has been suffering from the effects of terrorism for the past 40 years and also referred to the terror group Islamic State and the beheading of journalists. "We have suffered for 40 years from the effects of terrorism, it is such a deformity that we can't imagine. And when we see it on TV when a journalist's throat is being slit, and that in the 21st century such a heinous crime is being committed in front of us... and till we don't challenge it... we have to believe in humankind, we have to go together, terrorism is the enemy of humanity and anyone who believes in human- ity needs to come together to combat it," he said. He said all countries needed to overcome their divisions to combat the challenge of terrorism, and for that there was only one way -- that the world should understand the danger of terrorism and those who believe in humanity should join hands. Modi also said there was no good terrorism and bad terrorism, and if we brand it like this then terrorism would take advantage of that. He gave the example of West Asia, saying the region was far ahead in prosperity, "but look at the situation now" He said that the world should believe in one mantra -- for prosperity for everyone and encouraging tourism -- to encourage people-to-people contacts. "Terrorism divides and tourism unites, and we want that we should meet and get to know each other," Modi said. Recently Consul General of India in Toronto, Akhilesh Mishra met with the Dawoodi Bohra Community in Canada. Increases of 0.5% and 0.3% were recorded in May andJune respectively. In July, manufacturing and the public sector were the major contribu-tors to growth. Increases were also recorded in construction, profes-sional services and retail trade. On the other hand, there were notable decreases in mining and oil andgas extraction as well as in utilities. Agriculture, wholesale trade, transpor tation and warehousing services as well as ar ts, enter tain-ment and recreation were also down.Manufacturing output grows

Manufacturing output grew 1.0% in July. Durable-goods manufactur-ing rose 1.6%, as almost all industrial sub-groups recorded growth.Increases were notable in transpor tation equipment, computer andelectronic products as well as furniture and related products manu-facturing. In contrast, miscellaneous manufacturing decreased.Non-durable goods manufacturing grew 0.4% in July, mainly as aresult of increases in food manufacturing, printing and related sup-por t activities as well as in plastic and rubber products manufactur-ing. In contrast, the manufacturing of chemical, petroleum and coalproducts as well as beverage and tobacco products declined. The public sector increasesThe public sector increased 0.5% in July, mainly as a result of gains

in educational services. Educational services grew 1.5% in July, butwas still below normal levels of activity as a result of a labour disputein British Columbia. There was lower demand for both electric-ity and natural gas, mainly because of cooler than average temperaturesin July in some parts of the country.Construction growsConstruction grew 0.4% in July, largely because of gains in residentialbuilding and repair construction. Engineering construction and non-resi-dential building construction edged up.The output of real estate agents and brokers increased 0.6% in July, asactivity in the home resale market grew.Wholesale trade declines while retail trade edges upWholesale trade declined 0.6% in July. CANADA'S POPULATION GROWTH IS THEHIGHEST AMONG G7 COUNTRIES

CONTD. FROM PAGE 1Population growth mainly driven by international migrationIn 2013/2014, net international migration accounted for almost two-thirds

(66.5%) of the total increase in Canada's population. At the provinciallevel, net international migration was also the main factor in populationgrowth for Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba,

Saskatchewan, Alberta and BritishColumbia.Natural increase played a majorpart in the territories, whether bypartially offsetting the losses frominterprovincial migration, as in theNorthwest Territories, or by con-tributing to population increase, asin Nunavut. In contrast, natural increase re-mained fairly low in the Atlanticprovinces and was negative inNewfoundland and Labrador for asecond year in a row.In the last 30 years, EasternCanada's population share has de-creased, while Western Canada'shas increasedOn July 1, 2014, more than 85% ofCanadians lived in four provinces:Ontario (38.5%), Quebec (23.1%),British Columbia (13.0%) andAlberta (11.6%).The population share of each prov-ince and territory has evolved dif-ferently over time. Since 1984, thepopulation share of the Atlanticprovinces has decreased by 2.3percentage points, while that of thewestern provinces has increasedby 2.4 percentage points.Over the same period, population sharesincreased in three provinces: Ontario(+2.7 percentage points), Alberta(+2.2 percentage points) and BritishColumbia (+1.5 percentage point). Ofall the provinces, Quebec's popu-lation share decreased the most (-2.8 percentage points), reaching23.1% as of July 1, 2014.Baby boomers accelerateCanada's population aging

On July 1, 2014, 15.7% of Canada's population (nearly one in six Canadi-ans) was aged 65 and older. This proportion has steadily increased sincethe mid-1960s as a result of lower fertility levels and longer life expect-ancy.Thir ty years earlier, the proportion of Canadians aged 65 and older was10.0%. The growth of this age group has accelerated since the beginningof the current decade, more precisely in 2011, when the first baby boomersstarted to turn 65.According to the most recent population projections, by the year 2016,the number of seniors aged 65 and older would be greater than the num-ber of children under the age of 15. Furthermore, seniors would accountfor between 24% and 28% of the population by the year 2063, almost 50years from now.The proportion of people aged 55 to 64 now exceeds that of those aged15 to 24Population estimates show, for the first time, that there are more Canadi-ans aged 55 to 64-the age when people typically leave the labour force-than there are Canadians aged 15 to 24-the age when people typicallyenter the labour force. On July 1, 2014, there were 4.6 million people aged15 to 24 in Canada, compared with 4.7 million people aged 55 to 64.Thir ty years ago, for every person aged 55 to 64, there were two peopleaged 15 to 24; this ratio has now fallen by half to just below 1.On July 1, 2014, the ratio of people aged 15 to 24 to people aged 55 to 64remained above 1 in four provinces: Manitoba (1.14), Alberta (1.12),Saskatchewan (1.09) and Ontario (1.04). The ratio was below 1 in BritishColumbia (0.93), Quebec (0.86), Yukon (0.85) and in each of the Atlanticprovinces, reaching its lowest value in Newfoundland and Labrador (0.71).The population is older in the Atlantic provinces and younger in theterritoriesThe extent of population aging is not the same across the country. Theproportion of people aged 65 and older was highest in the Atlantic prov-inces and lowest in the territories. Among the provinces, the highestproportions of seniors were in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (18.3%in both cases), while Alberta (11.4%) recorded the lowest. The nation'syoungest population lived in Nunavut, where seniors made up 3.7% of thepopulation.Population aging is faster in Newfoundland and Labrador and slower inSaskatchewanDuring the last 30 years, the proportion of seniors aged 65 years andolder increased in all provinces and territories. The pace of populationaging, however, was not uniform across Canada.Population aging was most rapid in Newfoundland and Labrador, wherethe proportion of people aged 65 and older rose by 9.5 percentage points(from 8.2% to 17.7%) between 1984 and 2014. Population aging was alsorapid in New Brunswick and Quebec (+7.8 percentage points for eachprovince) over the last 30 years. In contrast, Saskatchewan was theprovince with the lowest proportional increase in seniors (+2.2 percent-age points).Canada-United States comparisonA comparison of the demographic indicators for Canada's provinces andterritories with those of the 50 American states (see the note to readers)can provide a better understanding of Canada's diverse popula-tion por trait. Cer tain provinces and territories are either the fastestgrowing or the slowest growing among regions in Canada and the UnitedStates.Of all states, provinces and territories, Nunavut registered the larg-est annual growth, at 3.2%. It was followed by Nor th Dakota(+3.1%) and Alber ta (+2.8%), two regions associated with economicactivity related to oil and gas extraction. On the other hand, the populations of the Northwest Territories (-0.5%),Newfoundland and Labrador (-0.2%), New Brunswick (-0.2%) and WestVirginia (-0.1%) registered the largest population decreases.Source - statscan.gc.ca

NDP SUPPORTS CANADA -KOREA TRADE DEALToronto - The NDP has announced its support for the Canada-South KoreaTrade Agreement, Canada's first trade agreement with an Asian country."Increasing our trade ties with Asia is key to ensuring Canada's prosperity inthe 21stcentury," said NDP Trade critic Don Davies (Vancouver Kingsway)."South Korea is a democratic country with a complementary, high-standardseconomy that provides significant, strategic benefits for Canada. While wehave some concerns, we believe this agreement is, on balance, a good deal forCanada." Canadian exporters have lost 30% of their market share in SouthKorea since 2012 - when the EU and US implemented agreements and se-cured preferential access for their companies. Australia, a major competitorwith Canada, is poised to adopt its own trade deal with South Korea. TheCanada-Korea Trade Agreement will level the playing field for Canadian com-panies, and give them a foothold in a key Asian market. While affirming theirintention to vote in favour of the deal, Davies made it clear it is not the agree-ment an NDP government would have negotiated. He criticised the Conserva-tive government for insisting on an unnecessary Investor-State Dispute Settle-ment mechanism, and failing to secure the same protections for the autoindustry that the United States achieved in their agreement with South Korea."The South Korean government aggressively promotes exports and their auto-motive industry," said Davies. "Conservatives have been failingour country's manufacturing sector and must do more to ensureCanada's automotive sector has the suppor t it needs to succeed inan increasingly competitive global market."

Nine in Ten (87%) Post-SecondaryStudents Report Still Having a Lot toLearn About Managing FinancesToronto - With a new semester underway and students learningnew and big ideas inside the classroom, most indicate there'sanother subject outside the classroom that they still could broadentheir horizons on: financial management. According to a new survey con-ducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of RBC, nine in ten (87%) post-secondarystudents report that they still have a lot to learn about managing finances. Twoin five students particularly indicate that they wish they knew how much all the'little extras' cost (42%) and knew more about budgeting (41%). Other mon-etary measures students wished they knew about include:" How to plan for unexpected financial needs (42%)" The details about paying back student loans (36%)" How broke they might be when graduating (33%)" A majority (59%) of parents, on the other hand, wish their child knew theimportance of starting to save and plan early. Despite this disagreementamong students and parents, most students (80%) agree that their parentshave been a good financial role model for them. Students also appear veryinclined to discuss school-related finances with their parents, like taking ondebt for school-related expenses (80%). Credit, however, seems moreof a mystery.

From defence to development, technology to lead India-US partnership

BY SAROJ MOHANTY

The spectacular success of the incredibly frugal Mars Orbiter Mis-sion that put India straight into an elite club and opened up an array ofbusiness oppor tunities has created the right atmospherics for PrimeMinister Narendra Modi's visit to the US during which he would en-gage with the civil society, policy makers and the business commu-nity. And in almost all of these, one subject that would be the talkingpoint would be technology. Both the countries are expected to ink an agreement on launching ajoint radar satellite mission among other initiatives related to energy, manufacturing, health and education, opening up new oppor tunitiesfor par tnership. The tech-savvy prime minister himself set the tone ahead of his inter-actions, saying the US "continues to inspire India" in education andinnovation, and he strongly believes in the possibilities of technologyto transform governance and empower people in India. And the reasons are not far to seek. The world has been going thoughthe "Third Wave" of industrial revolution, a radical shift to a knowl-edge-based society in which revolutionary technologies in severalfields are creating newer production techniques and products. Econo-mies around the world are being structured around the computer andother high-tech industries. Also, the growth of the high-tech industries has demolished the oldassumption that comparative advantage is a gift of nature which can-not be changed by government policies. The experience of the USdefence-related industries, Japan and South Korea have shown thatin many sectors comparative advantage to a considerable degree isa product of deliberate policy choices by national governments. Andthe fact that comparative advantage at least to some extent and under

cer tain conditions can be created has encouraged governments tointervene in the market and pursue sector specific policies. At the same time, international competition in technology is intensify-ing. The outcome of this competition is going to determine whichcountries would be dominant global players in the years ahead. It isin this context that transfer of technology as well as exchange of itamong nations have become an instruments of foreign policy. For India, technology would play a critical role in shaping its power -hard and soft. The significance of the bilateral exchange this weekhas to be seen in this strategic context.Modi came to power on agenda of development, for which technol-ogy, investment and market are essential. His 'Make in India' initia-tive also aims at identifying select domestic companies having lead-ership in innovation and new technology and turning them into globalchampions. And there is a new synergy in perception, a convergence of interestsof the two sides that has been discerned in recent months. For India, the US, the world's largest and its biggest innovation economy, re-mains the prime source of all the three ingredients for economicsuccess. The Americans believe that India can achieve rapid growththrough innovation if it opens up its economy to foreign technologies.State Depar tment point-person Nisha Desai Biswal says that the UShas "cutting-edge" technology to offer.Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel, who last month visited India forpreparatory talks for the visit, said both countries are working to-gether to advance the joint cooperative science and technology pri-orities, that includes areas "ranging from big data to cognitive sci-ences to chemical and biological defence, and material sciences".Both India and the US believe that science, technology, and innovationare key tools that will help address global challenges such as climate

change, pandemics, food, water and energy security. Both countriesare building public-private par tnerships that promote science andtechnology-based innovation and entrepreneurship.Among the new initiative is a Memorandum of Understanding on En-vironmental and Occupational Health, the US Depar tment of Healthand Human Services and India's Ministry of Health and FamilyWelfare are finalizing. The MOU would develop fur ther coopera-tion in research, education and training, and capacity-building ina number of focus areas, including public health aspects of house-hold and ambient air pollution, water quality and access, expo-sures to hazardous substances and strengthening of laboratorycapacity. Both countries are also working toward signing two project an-nexes under a US Depar tment of Energy and India's Depar tmentof Atomic Energy (DAE) agreement on high-energy physics coop-eration. The project annexes aim to facilitate and promote coop-eration on Accelerator Research and Development and relatedsciences to fur ther understanding of fundamental physics.NASA and ISRO are also planning future missions to moon andother destinations. The prime minister's talks are taking place just a month ahead ofthe India-US Technology Summit in New Delhi under the theme"Tackling 21st Century Challenges Together". The summit Nov 18-19 will include par ticipation from several companies, academicinstitutions, and scientists, and will help build productive par tner-ships in joint research and development, technology commercializa-tion, and joint business ventures designed to promote trade and in-vestment between the two countries.IANS - Saroj Mohanty is a senior journalist and analyst. The Agreement delivers on the 2009promise of a very comprehensive liberalization of trade in goodsand services, significant new oppor tunities in government pro-curement, provisions to enhance and encourage investment, andimproved and modernized rules on other trade-related issues. The Canada-EU Trade Agreement also establishes a range of co-operation mechanisms that will ensure continued collaborationbetween Canada and the EU as we continue to strengthen anddeepen our economic par tnership. At the same time, Canada andthe EU place a strong emphasis on sustainable development, oncultural diversity, and on the right to regulate in the public interestwithin their territories.Recognizing that this is a time of continued recovery in the globaleconomy, we highlight the impor tance of the Canada-EU TradeAgreement as a vehicle to create new prosperity on both sides ofthe Atlantic. The Agreement will help generate more trade andtwo-way investment, and promote jobs and growth. We will workexpeditiously to ensure that all our businesses, workers and con-sumers throughout Canada and EU Member States are equally

While we welcome the agree-ments on a ceasefire reached in Minsk on 5 September and 19 Sep-tember 2014, they must be respected and fully implemented. Russiamust withdraw its military assets and forces from inside Ukraine andalong the Ukrainian border, and continue to de-escalate the situation.Russia must also take concretesteps to allow for a political anddiplomatic solution that fully re-spects Ukraine's sovereignty andter ritorial integrity. We expectRussia to return to the path of fullcompliance with international lawand its international obligationsand responsibilities. We will, with other par tners from within and outside the region, assist thepeople of Syria and Iraq to act decisively against the threat of ISIL.Instability in Syria, caused by the Assad regime's brutal war againstits own people, has allowed ISIL to flourish. The agenda should reinforce the interna-tional community's commitment to pover ty eradication and sus-tainable development. We also remain committed to the need fora strong post-2015 accountability mechanism. We discussed the health of women and children as a pressingglobal issue, welcomed initiatives such as the May 28-30 TorontoSummit and sessions held this week on the margins of the UnitedNations General Assembly on these issues, and noted that endingpreventable maternal and child deaths within a generation couldbe within arm's reach with a renewed global commitment.Canada and the EU expressed their concern about the Ebola crisis inAfrica, and stressed the impor tance of a coordinated internationalresponse to assist affected countries to tackle the diseases as swiftlyand efficiently as possible. This Ottawa Summit has given renewed voice and vision to our part-nership, and has positioned us to work more closely and effectivelytogether across a range of priority areas, for the prosperity and secu-rity of our peoples, and the global community.Source - pm.gc.ca

Ontario's economy will be biggest beneficiary of U.S.growth & weaker Canadian dollar in the next two yearsTORONTO: Ontario's economy is poised to be the single biggest ben-eficiary of sturdy U.S. growth and a weaker Canadian dollar in thenext two years, likely boosting provincial government coffers by $4-5 billion, finds a new repor t from CIBC World Markets. The repor t calls for Ontario's economy to grow by 2.8 per cent nextyear, behind only that of Alber ta. In 2016, real GDP growth is forecastat 2.4 per cent, but still above the national average."From manufacturing shipments, to domestically driven signposts in retailing, wholesaling and homebuilding, Ontario has seen a notable resurgence, shift-ing from a perennial trailer to among the better performing regions of thecountry," says Avery Shenfeld, Chief Economist at CIBC, who coauthoredthe report with senior economist, Warren Lovely. "Employment hasn'tcaught fire, but should respond at some point to firming output."Mr. Shenfeld notes that historically, Ontario's real GDP has had the tight-est correlation to U.S. economic activity, but after years of plant exits, capacity use has actually tightened in the face of demand gains. "Ontarioneeds to cultivate growth sectors, rebuild capacity and win the battle fornew facilities."Our call for the Bank of Canada to significantly lag the U.S. FederalReserve in rates hikes next year, and a resulting depreciation of theloonie to roughly 85 cents U.S., should reposition the province as a morecost-competitive location. Lower federal/provincial corporate tax rates, the shift to the HST, and a $2.5 billion fund set up by the province to courtdirect investment, could be further enticements."The report notes that Ontario's economy has underperformed the na-tional average dating all the way back to the 2002-2007 pre-economiccrisis period. The CIBC economists are calling for Ontario to match na-tional growth in 2014 at 2.3 percent and move slightly ahead in each ofthe next two years. This forecast would top estimates and improve the

provincial government's bottom line."All told, Ontario could have an additional $4-5 billion accumulated overtwo years that could be used to either exceed targets for deficit reductionor avoid the full burden of what rating agencies have judged to be tough-to-meet spending constraints," says Mr. Shenfeld. "The extra room cap-tures published budget sensitivities to nominal GDP divergences, andobviates the need to dip into the $1 billion in reserves and $0.5 billion incontingencies set aside this year, and the $1.2 billion reserved for 2015/16."He notes that despite the fact that the province has been running ahead ofbudget targets, the province's bond performance has been hurt recentlyby earlier downgrades in the economic outlook and risks of a corre-sponding move by rating agencies. As well, a softer outlook implied eventighter spending plans or the fur ther use of tax-hike room in order for theprovince to meet the targeted date for a balanced budget."Having avoided a credit downgrade, Ontario bought itself some time, and the revenues associated with a better-than-expected nominal GDPoutlook should be of value in protecting its rating," adds Mr. Shenfeld. Hesays that the rebound in the U.S. and a more favourable exchange ratehave the province better positioned to rise to its fiscal challenges."We see conditions a year from now as comparable to late-2010 andearly-2011. As was the case back then, Ontario real growth will betopping 2.5 per cent and 10-year Canada bonds will be near 3 percent. If that analogy extends to spreads, a year from now, 10-yearOntario bonds could tighten in to that earlier period's 70 basis pointspread over Canadas. So bond investors have reason to cheer "growOntar io grow" as gains in nominal GDP suppor t some bondoutperformance against Canadas."SOURCE CIBC World Markets

Fears over fresh eruption cancel Japan volcano searchTOKYO: Rescue operations on a Japanese volcano were halted forthe day on Tuesday because of fears there could be a fresh eruption, officials said, with at least 24 bodies still on the mountain.Helicopters were ordered to remain on the ground while troops, firefighters and police were stood down for the day, having done noreal searching since the operation was suspended on Monday be-cause of rocketing levels of toxic gas near the still-fragile peak."Both ground and air rescue operations have been called off today,"said an official of Nagano Prefecture's crisis-management office aftervolcanologists repor ted increasingly violent tremors at the site earlyin the day.Rescue workers had begun climbing early Tuesday to try to reach thebodies of at least two dozen people who were among the 36 known tohave died when Mount Ontake burst angrily to life on Saturday whilethronged with hikers. But they were ordered to stand by when scientists noted increasingvehemence in the volcanic ear thquakes on the 3,067-metre (10,121-foot) Ontake, leading to fears it could erupt again. In Tokyo, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged maximum effor ts onrescue and disaster prevention."There are people still out of contact, although the police, firefighters

and the Self-Defence Forces have been conducting all-out rescueeffor ts despite the ongoing volcanic activity at Mount Ontake," henoted in parliament."The government will continue its utmost rescue effor ts with the co-operation of all organizations concerned," he said.Officials have warned the death toll could rise because several peopleremain unaccounted for, although some of them could be among thedead still on the mountain.Saturday's natural disaster came just a month after more than 70people were killed in huge landslides triggered by heavy rainfall inthe western city of Hiroshima."In light of experience from these disasters, the government is allunited to take disaster-prevention measures including developmentof necessary laws to protect people's life and proper ty," Abe said.Ontake erupted without warning during a busy hiking weekend, spewinggas, rocks and ash high into an autumn-blue sky.

Hundreds of hikers were caught on the slopes of the volcano, withdozens trapped on the peak by flying rocks and hot, toxic gases.Steam and sulfurous gases continued Tuesday to billow from theruptured crater of Japan's second-highest active volcano.Volcanic tremors have been detected constantly since Saturday's erup-tion, with underground water boiling into steam and breaking or mov-ing rocks, a volcanologist at the meteorological agency said."The shakes became bigger (early Tuesday), prompting worries overpossible secondary casualties" if there is a fresh explosion, he said.Search operations have been hampered throughout by rocketing lev-els of poisonous gas pouring from the volcano.A Japanese army official who took par t in the search has said rescu-ers have been wearing helmets, bullet-proof vests, goggles and masksto protect themselves from any fresh eruption. The meteorological agency has warned that volcanic debris may settleas far as four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the peak.

Top court adjourns NawazSharif’s disqualification

hearing till October 2ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's supreme cour t, adjourned till October 2, thehearing of a plea to disqualify Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for alleg-edly lying to the parliament over asking the army to mediate a trucewith anti- government protesters. The three-judge apex cour t bench, headed by Justice Jawwad SKhawaja, adjourned the hearing till Thursday due to shor tage of time.Ishaq Khan Khakwani of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), led by crick-eter-turned-politician Imran Khan, last week filed a petition seekingSharif's disqualification for his alleged false statement in the parlia-ment. Similar petitions have been filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujat Hussain, and another by a law-yer Gohar Nawaz. They alleged that Sharif misled the parliamentwhen he said that he never asked army chief General Raheel Sharif totalk to Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri, a fiery cleric leading a sit-in tooust Nawaz Sharif, to end protests in Islamabad. The army, after the prime minister's denial, had issued a statementthat Prime Minister Sharif had in fact sought help from them. The petitioners have contended that the Prime Minister was also in-volved in matters related to the attack on the Supreme Cour t in 1997.They also said Sharif misled the nation when he went abroad for 10years in 2000 after signing a pardon agreement with former militaryruler Pervez Musharraf, but denied making such a pact.It should be noted that Ar ticle 69 of Pakistan's Constitution says thatparliament's proceedings cannot be questioned in any cour t of law.But it would be interesting to see how the cour t interprets the ar ticle.

Is SRK being overconfident about 'Happy New Year'?

Akshay Kumar will be seen playing the role of an alcoholic superstarin upcoming film 'The Shaukeens'.The 47-year-old actor took to twitter to unveil the trailer of the film andalso revealed that he plays himself in the movie, which is a remake of1982 film 'Shaukeen' directed by Basu Chatterjee.'The Shaukeens' are here! 3 old yet young men, a hot girl and analcoholic superstar played by yours truly in a special appearance. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has had a tryst with off-beat films with 'Maya Memsaab','Swades', 'Chak De! India', but does not understand the concept of this genre as hefeels his presence can turn any unconventional film into a mainstream money-spinner. The 48-year-old actor, best known for his romantic hero act in films, saidhe did take a few risks with his movies but since he is such a big star, his

experimental films also find audience. "What is an off-beat film? You put me in anoff-beat film and it will become on-beat. Like 'Chak De! India' was an off-beat filmand it did really well money wise. It is the biggest success of my career," ShahRukh told. "I think any film that I am part of will become bigger than it was meantto be as I am big movie star. Even if it is an off-beat movie, people will watch it andso it will become on-beat. I did 'Maya Memsaab', 'Oh Darling Yeh Hai India', 'Darr','Baazigar', 'Swades', 'Chak De! India' and others so I do off-beat films whenever Ifeel like doing it," he said. However, Shah Rukh said that he is cautious aboutstarring in off-beat films and will never take up such projects just to comply withwhat others want him to do. "I will never do anything that others want me to do. Ihave enough money, I am a rich star, I am famous and have enough awards. I willdo films that make me happy like I did 'Ra.One' because my children likes super-heroes. My father played hockey so I wanted to do 'Chak De'. It is important to feelexcited about doing what you want to," he said. Shah Rukh said that his forthcom-ing releases YRF's 'Fan' and Rahul Dholakia's 'Raees' fall in the category of off-beatcinema and he is happy to be a part of them. The star, who has been in the industryfor over two decades, said even at this stage of his career he does not worry abouthis work as he knows he is evolving as an actor with each passing day."I have no worries at all. I am good at the craft, I am at a good level. I know mychoices and do my best. I have no worries as every day you evolve as an actor.Actors don't worry and if they do they are not actors they are stars. And I am anactor. My stardom overshadows my work," he said.

'S.D. BURMAN WAS STUBBORN ANDTHOUGHTFUL MUSICIAN'

Movie Review

IT'S SHOCKING THAT 'BALWINDERSINGH FAMOUS HO GAYA'

Well now it has become a set trend for Punjabi singers to take up acting astheir part time profession and the league comprises of prominent names likeDiljit Dosanjh, Gippi Garewal et al. And it looks like the wizard of voice whorecently got bitten by this acting bug is singer Mika Singh But unlike his othercontemporaries from Punjabi pop arena Mika took a somewhat better anddifferent path and opted for a Bollywood movie to step in the acting aisle alongwith another singer turned actor Shaan, instead of a Pollywood cine flick. And in this new beginning of his Mika got the company of Bollywood's sea-soned actors like Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav and Asrani too, who teamedup with him for Sunil Agnihotri's recently released cine delight "BalwinderSingh Famous Ho Gaya" which also has Gabriela Bertante, Vindu DaraSingh in the prominent roles. At its opening "Balwinder Singh Famous HoGaya" witnessed a poor response at the BO which had just 15 cine-goersin the first show. With "Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya" the producerhas attempted to reap big dividends by casting Anupam Kher, Mika andShaan, all well known names of Bollywood. But the blunder lies in thestory and its rickety plot.In the movie singers Mika and Shaan carry the same name Balwinder SinghLudhianevala and second Balwinder Singh Patialacala. Both the cities arelocated in Punjab. With frames rolling ahead Mika is sent to Mumbai by hisvillage friends to become famous. After reaching Mumbai Mika befriendsJulie (Gabreila Bertante) both living in the same rented building belonging torenowned comedian Asrani. Whereas on the other hand it's Shaan who is

upset on his failure to date the heroine. On the hind-side movie has another prominent character, Divan Sahib(Anupam Kher) who lost his son in a car accident and is eager to trace hisgrandson Balwinder alias Balu aka Balwinder Singh who is saved by anobnoxious women. With story proceeding ahead a newspaper advertise-ment given by Divan Sahib brings a flood of claimants who portraying them-selves to be his grandson. Ultimately the women who had taken away Divan'sgrandson 25 years ago is incidentally traced by Divan Sahib. While attempt-ing to avoid Divan the woman meets with an accident. The woman named inthe film as Jammuna losses her memory.Ultimately the woman in another accident regains her memory and takesAnupam Kher to a car workshop where his grandson is gainfully employed. The story line and the plot are comical which seem to have been deliberatelycreated the way they are.Yes a few scenes with dialogues of Rajpal Yadav force the viewers to giggle. The movie can boast of songs by Mika and Shaan. In a cameo Sunny Leonedances to the tune of a song. Technically there is no draw back in the use ofcameras, spotlights and sound. The whole story does not show who has ultimately become famous? So onthe basis of the entertaining potency of "Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya"all that I can shell out is 2 stars and that's because I am still in a state ofdilemma that despite such a flimsy concept and execution "Balwinder SinghFamous Kaise Ho Gaya".

New Delhi (IANS): S.D. Burman had composed four songs for "Talash" (1969)when the producer suggested to use singer Mukesh's voice for "Tere NainaTalash Karein", but the musician was determined to feature playback singerManna Dey because his lilting voice better suited the situation. This minordifference saw Burman walking out of the project - just one of the manyanecdotes writer and author Sathya Saran mentions in her new book "SunMere Bandhu Re: The Musical World of S.D.Burman" (Harper Collins) thatwas launched in the capital Wednesday."He was a very stubborn person who would brush aside something he didn'tlike," Sathya told IANS, adding: "But he was a thoughtful composer whowould understand the situation well."This is why, the former editor of Femina magazine and a columnist, pointedout that Burman, after his fall out with "Talash" producer O.P. Ralhan, he evenrefused to meet him."It was only when filmmaker Vijay Anand intervened and pacified the situa-tion that Burman was back on the project," Saran said, adding Manna Deyfinally sang the song.Saran, who has written a biography, "10 Years With Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi'sJourney", was approached by many who requested her to write on Burmanwho has composed the music for over 100 movies, including Hindi andBengali films. But to write on Burman, she admitted she first had to under-stand the composer from his many acquaintances and friends.

This was more so because his son, R.D.Burman, had passed away and shecouldn't contact versatile singer Asha Bhosle, his wife."In the absence of these links, I had to rely on his autobiography and peoplewho knew him," she admitted. It was also Mumbai-based Saran's personalfondness for film music and S.D.Burman's music that the writing of the bookwas smooth sailing. Looking through variousprisms, she has captured many memorable stories about the man who hascomposed memorable music for films like "Pyaasa", "Jewel Thief","Abhimaan" and "Chupke Chupke", among others.Saran pointed out how learning some hard lessons early in life helped inshaping up his career and he restricted himself to composing songs for onlyfour films a year. "Early in his career, he gave many hit songs, but when hewould go out and meet people, he saw they were singing Naushad's songs. He realised that people only liked classical songs," said Saran."He got the grip of this mantra and became selective. He would make hisservants listen to the tunes to get their reactions," she added.Sharing another anecdote, Saran recollected how S.D. Burman was miffedwith actor Dev Anand for spoiling a beautiful melody "Phoolon Ke Rang Se"from "Prem Pujari" by directing the song in an unappealing manner."Burman understood the meaning of scenes, so he was very angry with DevAnand for spoiling this beautiful song with unattractive picturisation," sheconcluded.

The latest Punjabi flick Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo is getting rave reviews and fast becoming a super hit. The film Goreyan NuDaffa Karo is produced By Speed Records, Aman Khatkar & Arsara Films and is directed by Pankaj Batra. The star cast includesAmrinder Gill, Amrit Manghera, Binnu Dhillon, Rana Ranbir, Yograj Singh, Sardar Sohi, and Karamjit Anmol.

CONTD. FROM PAGE 17When compared with Katrina, sheclaimed: "Katrina definitely is aninspiration and has been in the in-dustry for a long time fighting herway right at the top. So she under-stands the tricks of the trade welland I can for sure learn a lot fromher as someone who has gonethrough all and comprehends howto navigate from various situations. Therefore, I got a lot of support fromher but I cannot ape her or for thatmatter any other actress. In myvery first film, I have done my bestas I am passionate about acting andwish to move ahead on my own tal-ent." Though she is in awe of a num-ber of actresses, this romantic com-edy reflects her own unique traits. She was all praise for the inherentinternational appeal of Salman Khanwho had come out for the musiclaunch of the movie saying "it reallyis a huge deal whatever he has doneand his presence and associationwith the movie will draw a large num-ber of people." Trying to make hermark in movies she is waiting forappropriate opportunities in bothBollywood and Hollywood and hasnothing specific for now.Meanwhile, the handsome youngwriter and producer of Dr CabbieVinay Virmani, whose first venturewas Break Away, informed Midweekthat he wrote the story after listeningto an actual narrative of an Indiandoctor who was working as a cabdriver in Toronto. The story hit himhard but inspired him as well, whenthe doctor told him though therewere no jobs in his own field stillno one could take his dream awayfrom him as he converted his taxiinto a mobile medical clinic.Shedding light on the cast of themovie, Vinay said: "It was a greatand fun cast especially Isabella whowas doing her first film. She has a lotof fire. Kunal is also a great star andis like my brother now. He alsoplays the role of my best friend inthe movie. My job as a producer atthe sets of a movie is to make ev-eryone feel comfortable and giveroom to the stars to create a nu-anced portrait of their characters."Vinay plays the role of Deepak inthe movie while Kunal is TonySingh. Dal Mukhnee and a roman-tic number by Raghav are his fa-vorite tracks of the movie. "But themovie's music as a whole is veryhummable. Dal Mukhanee is bigand is grabbing everyone's atten-tion whether one is a Gujrati orPunjabi and is even drawing thewhites. At the same time, I feel solucky that Raghav gave me one ofhis tracks for the movie."Vinay also held Salman in high es-teem adding: "Though Salman is notplaying any role in the movie buthim being part of the movie is sohonoring and humbling for me. Heis an amazing man and I have aworld of respect for him. Salmaninspires me the most as an actorand as a human being. I wishthrough this film I uphold his nameand acquire some of his qualities."Vinay informed the eschewingstory line focuses on Toronto's im-migrant community and the profes-sional discrimination the doctors, engineers, and scientists face whenthey land in Canada and are com-pletely unprepared for the chal-lenges. The story is equipped witha sense of purpose and capturesthe beauty of untold stories. Hesaid: "It is sad to see why their edu-cational backgrounds are not rec-

ognized or the authorities here arenot familiar with their levels ofcompetence. I wish there was abody in place that could assess theeducational proficiency of thoseschool back home. Having saidthat, what I have tried to portrayin the movie is if you are pas-sionate about something and be-

lieve in it, just go for it. Like thedoctor in the movie followed hisdream and knew that was whathe wanted to do and so treatedpatients in his cab - so a power-ful portrayal of anguish and sur-vival."Dr Cabbie is Vinay's second project. His next will be on Komagata Maru

as he considers the event "an impor-tant milestone in India's freedommovement. It is a dream project. Ihave done comedies but this moviewill be a break away from the previ-ous two."His message to all the young-sters is: "Follow your dreams."

Historic gold medalsin archery and squash

For India men's squash team, which put on an inspiring performance to upset Malaysia 2-0 in thefinal but the women had to settle for the silver after losing the title clash, also to Malaysia, by asimilar margin. Indian archers, who won many medals, including a team gold and an individualsilver. The women's team first won the bronze medal and the men's team pulled off an unlikely winagainst major archery power South Korea by winning India's second gold.

JUST SPORTIANS: One wonders how Narendra Modi could draw a parallel betweenIndia winning a cricket match and the Mars achievement of spacescientists when he himself and Amit Shah controlled Gujarat crickettill the two shifted to Delhi. All the same, few would disagree with his asser tion after India suc-cessfully put the Mangalyaan satellite into orbit around Mars that thewhole country rejoices when our cricket team wins a tournamentwhereas what our scientists achieved is a thousand times biggerthan that.Modi's "love" for cricket apar t, Modi had the first taste of Indian spor tswhen the list of competitors for the Incheon Asian Games went to himfor clearance after the Spor ts Authority of India (SAI) refused to ap-prove some disciplines in which, in its opinion, Indian par ticipantshad no earthly chance of winning medals.Modi perhaps cleared some of the teams as future investment as thepolitical chiefs of the concerned national federations could come inhandy to him some day. In most cases, SAI has been proved rightgoing by the performances of some of those cleared by the PrimeMinister's Office (PMO).Compared with the performance in the first week at the GuangzhouGames four years ago it is not all that despairing for India in Incheon. They won 17 medals - one gold, two silver and 14 bronze. In the first week at Guangzhou, India won 19 medals - two gold, sevensilver and 10 bronze while in the second week they went berserk bytheir known standards winning 45 medals - 12 gold, nine silver and24 bronze. So there is still hope, though they will cer tainly not be returning witha bag of 75 medals as predicted by SAI or get closer to their best-everreturns of 64 from the continental games four years ago.Athletics contributed 12 medals, including five gold, and it will be toomuch to expect the same number from them this time. Boxers canfetch a clutch of medals as they brought in nine last time. Then thearchers are capable of producing gold out of the blue like they did onthe eighth day.The arguments and excuses for the shor tfall can be predictable. Withthe removal of cue spor ts and chess, we have been hard done andthen sure-shot medal winners, wrestler Sushil Kumar, boxer Vijender

Singh and tennis stars Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna and SomdevDevvarman are not there in Incheon for some reason or the other. Then our badminton players, who promised so much, failed to grabany medal.Excuse number two is that most spor tspersons were kept on tenter-hooks because of the late clearance of the contingent and some ofthem, including India's lone Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, did not have enough time to acclimatize and work out at the facilities.Yet, Bindra is happy with his bronze medal, and he is clear that thegold and silver medal winners shot better than him.The pronouncement from former shooter Moraad Ali Khan takes thecake. Now a filmmaker, he blames it on poor planning! He was quotedas saying that people must change their mindset, whatever that may

mean. He goes on to say that we should already be preparing for thenext Games rather than trying to fix up camps, training sessions onemonth before the Games!Going back to Modi, he says he draws confidence from the countlessextraordinary stories of ordinary Indians he has seen through de-cades of travel across India. Surely, he must have run into somespor tspersons, too, and they are now looking up to him for inspira-tion.The prime minister is right, there is a high tide of hope in India, but heshould not allow it to ebb. He should soon speak out as to what is instore for India's spor tspersons.( Veturi Srivatsa is a senior journalist. The views expressed are per-sonal. He can be reached at [email protected])

By Mayabhushan Nagvenkar / Panaji (IANS)Football legend and globetrotting coach Zico believes that the im-print of the 'beautiful game' is getting deeper roots in Asia as heembarks on his first assignment in India. The former Brazilian attacking midfielder has signed up for his firstIndian engagement as the coach of Indian Super League (ISL) teamFC Goa, after a string of assignments in-charge of Asian teams inUzbekistan, Japan, Iraq and Qatar, among other countries."Asia is getting stronger and I have not come here to be a passen-ger. I have come here to be a par t of the development of the game,"Zico told IANS during an interaction here. His notes and observations about Asian teams are frank as well aseducative. The Indian team of a decade back, he said, was simplynot up to the mark."In 2004, the players left much to be desired. They were shor t instature. Also physically they were not well-endowed," said Zico, who has played for Brazil in three World Cups but was never to liftthe coveted trophy.FC Goa is jointly promoted by three club owners - Anirudh Dhoot, adirector with Videocon; Srinivas Dempo, chairman and managingdirector of the Dempo Group of Companies; and Dattaraj Salogaocar, managing director of V.M. Salgaocar and Company. And, in what could be a fur ther indictment of decrepit Indian

footballing standards, Zico, who has coached four Asian teams, including the national sides of Uzbekistan, Japan and Iraq in therecent past, says he doesn't know much about the country'sfootballing culture or its players.Despite having signed on with FC Goa, Zico claimed he did notknow much about the players in his team."I do not have much knowledge about Indian football as such, but Iwill now meet with all of them and learn more about them. Aftertraining I will be able to tell you more about the Indian footballingculture," Zico said, adding that it was unfor tunate that a country withsuch a big population does not have much of a footballing story. Not having a hand in team selection is not a problem according tothe officially endorsed FIFA legend, who claims that in a club every-one has his job cut out and there's no need for overlap."Players belong to the club and not the trainer. It is up to the board ofdirectors to select the players. My job is to train them. I work withthe players that I have. Each one in the club, maybe the president, vice president, have their own allotted duties and responsibilities. They do their par t and I do my par t, which is training," Zico said."When I met the players on Thursday my job was to make thembetter players so that they do well. That's my job. It's very easy toget players, Mr. Dempo can get (sign) Messi or Cristiano Ronaldotomorrow. It's up to him what players to bring," the legend quipped.

ANUREET SINGH PICKED UP A CAREER-BEST 3 FOR 12.

Kallis happy with retirement timingFormer South Africa allrounder Jacques Kallis has said that his deci-sion to retire from international cricket was well considered and nottaken at the spur of the moment. Speaking exclusively to ESPNcricinfo,Kallis revealed he felt "the time was right" to walk away from thegame despite making his ambitions of playing the 2015 World Cup inAustralia and New Zealand public earlier."I have always said the day I wake up and I don't have that feeling ofwanting to play international cricket, I'll call it quits and that's exactlywhat happened," he said. "I was always going to be honest with my-self about that. It would have been nice to get through to the 2015World Cup but I'm cer tainly not going to play if I am even 1% off fromwhere I should be for international cricket."Kallis announced his decision to retire after scores of 0,1 and 4 in thethree-ODI series against Sri Lanka in July. He had announced his Testretirement in December 2013 after the final Test against India in Durban."I know I have made the right choice. I sleep comfor tably at night," hesaid. "I felt I had spent enough time away from home, other thingswere more impor tant than international cricket to me."Over the course of his career, Kallis was par t of five World Cup cam-paigns that ended in defeat. He insists the tag of chokers is "over-used" and is regarded as a "joke" within the side. According to Kallis"little things have gone wrong at the wrong time" in previous WorldCups for South Africa. "Somewhere along the line I can guarantee youSouth Africa will win a World Cup and the way the team is playing atthe moment, there's no reason it can't be the one coming up."While Kallis' international career might be over after 166 Tests and328 ODIs, he intends to continue playing T20 cricket around the worldfor a few more years. Currently in India for the Champions League T20as a member of Kolkata Knight Riders, Kallis said he enjoyed the roleof mentoring younger players. "When I grew up, seniors did that forme. I have 20 years of knowledge and I can pass that on to some ofthe youngsters and help them become cricketers they want to be-come."Knight Riders, who won their second IPL title in three years in June, are currently on a hot streak of 12 consecutive victories. Kallis cred-ited the success to the players getting on well both "on and off thefield". "The side was very cleverly and well chosen. Sometimes be-ing a good cricketer doesn't mean you are going to become a goodteam man," he said. "The side has very much been selected on guysgetting on well off the field which sometimes plays a massive role onthe field."They were the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the CLT20,racking up three successive wins, but Kallis insists there is no talkabout the title in the dressing room. "Not a word has been spokenabout that yet. We take it one game at a time. That's been a strength of

this side; it's the reason why we've won 12 in a row because wehaven't looked ahead."Despite the growing popularity of T20 Kallis, who is the second-high-est century maker and third-highest run-getter in Test cricket, be-lieves the longest format of the game is "healthy". "I believe there's noneed to change anything about Test cricket," he said. "Cricketers stillwant to be judged at how good they are in Tests. I think T20 has beenmagnificent for the game, it has speeded up Test cricket, made itmore exciting, brought new audiences to Test cricket."

Hungarian Olympic Committeebacks 2024 Olympics bidBudapest (IANS): The Hungarian Olympic Committee (HOC)has backed the idea of Budapest bidding to host the 2024 Sum-mer Olympics, HOC President Zsolt Borkai said.Borkai Thursday said he thought bidding for the Games wasrealistic. Since Hungary, and more specifically, his own home-town of Gyor, will be hosting the European Youth Olympic Fes-tival in 2017, repor ts Xinhua."It (Gyor) will have the chance to prove its ability to manage amajor multi-spor t event, even if it isn't in the same category asthe Olympics," he wrote on the HOC website."We've still got a great deal of work to do before actually pre-paring and submitting the bid, which includes clarifying anynumber of minor and not-so-minor details, but there is no doubtabout our intent, which is that Budapest would like to host theworld's best athletes," Borkai wrote. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will choose thevenue for the 2024 Games in 2017. As of now, four cities in theUS - Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington DC- as well as two German cities - Berlin and Hamburg - arevying for the hosting rights, while Rome and Istanbul are alsoexpected to bid.The 2016 Olympic Games will be in Rio de Janeiro and the2020 edition in Tokyo.

Bowlers deliver comfortable win for Kings XI

KINGS XI PUNJAB 139 FOR 3 (SAHA 42*,PETERSON 2-19) BEAT CAPE COBRAS 135(LEVI 42, AMLA 40, ANUREET 3-12,AKSHAR 3-22) BY SEVEN WICKETS

A late batting collapse in the Cape Cobras innings, triggered bycareer-best spells from Akshar Patel and Anureet Singh, helpedKings XI Punjab overcome an early blitz from Hashim Amla. Theirbatsmen then comfor tably overhauled the middling target to make itfour wins in four, ensuring the team finished at the top of the GroupB table. The pitch had been sluggish in the afternoon during the gamebetween Barbados Tridents and Hobar t Hurricanes and that hadforced the groundsman to water the surface before the star t of thematch. One cannot be cer tain if the way Cobras star ted theirinnings was a result of that or the brilliance of one man. Amla sawhis par tner Richard Levi pick up two fours and a six in the first twoovers - all poor deliveries - before spreading his wings.Amla greeted Kings XI's best bowler, Akshar Patel, with a raspingcut shot in the third over and followed it up with two inside-outboundaries in the next over - one of them going all the way over theropes. Thir teen runs came off the four th over but it just happened tobe the trailer. In the fifth over, Amla launched into Thisara Perera, picking up five consecutive boundaries and taking the team wellpast 50 in the process. But the innings took a different turn once Amla holed out at long offto Karanveer Singh's legspin. The ball star ted gripping and stoppingon the pitch again. Levi continued for a bit, finding the odd big hitand taking the team past 100 in the 13th over, before the wheelscame off.The next seven wickets, after Levi was dismissed, could only last

for 33 more balls and only 30 runs were added in that period. Threeof those wickets went to the impressive Akshar, who was alsoeconomical, giving away just two fours in his spell, and the otherthree to Anureet. Both also had to thank the agility of theirwicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha who affected two stumpings offAkshar and took a brilliant diving catch off Anureet. The target of 136 was going to be hard to defend against the KingsXI batting line-up. They had been prolific during the IPL and theyhave been similarly ruthless in the Champions League this year.Their lowest total - 146 - came from 17.4 overs. So Cobras' best betwas to pick early wickets. But that never happened. Apar t fromRobin Peterson, who picked up the wickets of Virender Sehwag andManan Vohra, none of the bowlers exer ted any control over thebatsmen and, with no real weak spot in their batting order, the runrate never dipped during any of the par tnerships.Sehwag and Vohra added 41 for the opening wicket, Saha joinedSehwag to add another 33. Once Sehwag was dismissed, Sahaadded 34 with Glenn Maxwell and paired with David Miller to takeKings XI over the line.

Allrounder key in UAE - LehmannAustralia's coach Darren Lehmann has said an allrounder ca-pable of bowling a significant number of overs will definitelybe par t of Australia's side during the upcoming Tests againstPakistan in the UAE. Mitchell Marsh appears likely to be thatman after Shane Watson was ruled out of the tour with a calfinjury, although the offspinning allrounder Glenn Maxwell isanother option.Lehmann also said that fast bowler Mitchell Johnson wouldnot be in doubt for the Tests and was also likely to play thethree preceding ODIs, despite being pulled out of the Champi-ons League Twenty20 due to a rib problem. Australia's one-dayand Twenty20 squads were due to fly out for the series onSunday night ahead of the first game, a one-off T20 next Sun-day in Dubai. The limited-overs games will be followed by a four-day tourmatch in Sharjah ahead of the two Tests in Dubai and AbuDhabi, and the warm-up match looms as impor tant for severalreasons. Firstly, it will give the selectors a clear indication ofthe fitness of captain Michael Clarke, who is battling a ham-string injury, but may also provide Marsh with a chance toprove his wor th in the longer format ahead of a likely Testdebut. "I think it puts competition on everyone," Lehmann saidof Marsh, ahead of the team's depar ture on Sunday. "Shane[Watson] knows he needs to be an allrounder. We've spoken tohim about that. We just want him fully fit when he comes backand plays. "It's a big summer coming up and with the heat overthere the allrounder would have to bowl a lot more than prob-ably four or five overs. He would probably get by as just abatter maybe but we need him as a fully fit allrounder."Lehmann said Australia would "definitely play an allrounder"in the UAE and although Marsh is the odds-on favourite, theoffspinner Maxwell is also in the Test squad. When Australia'stouring par ty was named, the chairman of selectors Rod Marshsaid Maxwell was lucky to have been picked but that he pro-vided the "x-factor" in the group.

'Bang Bang' was self-discovery: HrithikNew Delhi (IANS): Actor Hrithik Roshan says bits of his own self are par t of everyrole he plays on screen, but while working on "Bang Bang", he discovered a com-plete similarity between his real and reel self."'Bang Bang' is the first film in which instead of getting into the character, I discov-ered that I was the character. It was self-discovery," Hrithik said here during anevent Friday.

He believes that "it's a very for tunate moment for an actor" when his characters"become a platform to vent or channelise a similar emotion that you are

going through in real life".I have had such experiences while doing 'Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hain', 'KoiMil Gaya, 'Lakshya' and 'Guzaarish' and of course, 'Bang Bang'," he said, and added that "all of them are bits of pieces of me".Hrithik star ted his film career 14 years back with "Kaho Naa...PyaarHai". Over the years, he has established himself among Bollywood'stop rung performers.A dancer par excellence, his for thcoming release "Bang Bang", anofficial remake of Hollywood's Tom Cruise-starrer "Knight And Day",will see him grooving a la Michael Jackson. How did he learn to dance so well?"I'm still trying to understand how? But, we're all born with cer taingifts. Maybe I just look good when I dance but that's not good enough.Understanding your gifts and strengths is just not enough in life. Youneed to recognise them and then need to build a skill around them."So I have given hours and hours to master the things that I think aremy fortes and strengths, instead of thinking of what's not good about.I focus on what's good about me," said the actor, who overcamestammering to become the star he is today."Bang Bang", also starring Katrina Kaif, will release Oct 2.

Hats off to Vikram'scommitment for 'I': RajinikanthChennai (IANS): Superstar Rajinikanth, who was moved byactor Vikram's commitment for upcoming Tamil magnumopus "I", said that no actor could sacrifice as much ashim for a character. Vikram spent over two years work-ing for the film and he gained and lost considerableamount of weight to play his characters in the film.

"Vikram has dedicated his life for this film. Hats off to his commit-ment. I don't think you could find an actor who has sacrificed so muchfor a character in Indian cinema as well as Hollywood. I wish the filmall success," Rajinikanth told repor ters here.Rajinikanth also appreciated filmmaker Shankar for making "I", whichhas been on floors for over two years. "What do I say about Shankar? It's been two decades since he entered the Tamil film industry. He'sclimbing up with every film. 'I' will take him to the pinnacle. But Iknow this won't be the end because he will continue making films thatwill supersede his own work," he said. "He'd always complain thatwhy can't we make films on par with Hollywood. His aim has alwaysbeen to take Tamil cinema to global standards. He does all this notjust for money, but for his passion for cinema. He's the real cinemaIndian," he added. The movie, which is expected to hit the theatresduring the Diwali festive season, also features Amy Jackson andUpen Patel in impor tant roles.

Why Mahesh Bhatt does not wishto work with Alia?New Delhi (IANS): Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has never been hesitantin investing in newcomers and fresh talent. But when it comes to workingwith his own daughter, the young and vibrant Alia, he has his reservations.Bhatt calls his youngest daughter a "star".Asked if he will ever work with his daughter, the 64-year-old, known formaking serious and meaningful films including "Arth", "Saraansh", "Naam"and "Daddy", said an emphatic "No"."She is a star in her own world, and I don't work with stars," the film veterantold IANS here. With over four decades of experience in showbiz, he has given a chance tosome of the then "not so known faces" who later went on to make a remark-able name in the film world. One such example is Anupam Kher, who wit-nessed a sudden boost in his career with his role in "Saaransh".Mahesh Bhatt's banner Vishesh Films has also launched Rahul Roy in"Aashiqui", Sunny Leone in "Jism 2", and Pakistani actress Sara Loren in"Murder 3".Alia, on the other hand, has became a youth icon, thanks to her successfulroles so far. Be it for her role a student in her debut film "Student of The Year",a kidnapped rich girl in "Highway", an IIM student in "2 States" or a would-be-bride in "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania" - she won appreciation from all quar-ters.Sharing his reaction on her career graph as a father and as a filmmaker, Bhattsaid: "She is lucky to get what she wants." But for him, success comes witha clause."She got what we call 'the misfor tune of success' because I was for tu-nate enough to be unsuccessful when I star ted and then I was groomedin the pain. She had the privilege to take a fantastic take-off in theindustry and that too with diverse films. But it's still a beginning," hesaid.Bhatt feels "she has to do a lot to keep on fulfilling the unreasonabledemands that audiences make" because no one spares anyone intheir failure. "Remember this nation didn't even forgive SachinTendulkar, who had a spectacular take-off and when he leaned down,he had to face lot of criticism. This is public place, they worshipsuccess, but they hate failures too," added the filmmaker.
