Philadelphia: Mummers’ Parade sees elabo- rately costumed people dance to string bands, drawing on European and African heritages. 2 Britain London, England: London stages the world’s largest New Year’s Day parade at more than 3 km long. More than a quarter-million people ock to the shores of the Thames River for the annual New Y ear's Eve party in London. The iconic bells of B ig Ben sound at midnight as reworks are launched from the London Eye. 3 France Paris: Bonne Annee! About 100,000 people crowd the Champs Elysees to watch a magnicent reworks and light show at the Eiel Tower. 8 Japan Tokyo: New Y ear's Eve celebrations carry on for t hree days in Tok yo and involve the exploration of temples and palaces as much as they involve reworks, food stands and night- clubs. On Jan. 2, the Imperial Palace opens for tours, one of only two occasions through the year where visitors can see the inner workings of the palace. 9 Romania Performers go house-to-house in rural areas (and more recently in cities too), dancing and singing to ward o evil spirits. 11 South Africa 17th century slaves were prevented from celebrating on Dec. 31, so they did so on Jan. 1 instead. This year’s free concert features the Sheep- dogs, Our Lady Peace and Simple Plan and is expected to draw 40,000 people. Italy Romans dive o Cavour Bridge into shallow Tiber River — a dangerous tradition established in 1946. 4 Brazil Rio de Janeiro: If you think Rio goes loco during t he high-energy Carnival, you haven't seen anything! On New Year's Eve , Brazilians throw champagne and roses in the ocean as an oering to the goddess of the sea and celebrate with an elaborate reworks display at midnight. 5 Australia Sydney: Sydney’s rework s display is the world’s largest and most technologically a dvanced New Year’s Eve reworks display.
