As a part of our exploration of heating, cooling and mixing we made bread.

We looked at how dry yeast reacts when mixed with different temperature water.

We discovered that yeast likes warm water much more than either hot or cold water.

After that we made bread. We mixed flour and oil into our yeast and water. Then we rolled and kneaded the dough until it was smooth and elastic.

We baked the bread until it was brown on top and sounded hollow when tapped with our knuckles.

Year 5 & 6 - Ikanui

This week Ikanui has been hard at work focusing on their International Day performance. I can safely say the dance is coming along nicely and should be much better by next week!

Also, with the help of Khan Academy, we have been charging through our Decimals. We can add them, round them, write the numbers shown in grids, and show them in expanded form.

We have continued our Physical Education testing and all of Ikanui have improved in many of the P.E. skills. A huge shout-out goes to Yuma who did a plank for 14:07!

Jae Hyun is a new Year 7 NZIS student who comes from South Korea. He is diligently trying to improve his English language ability by frequently visiting the Secondary library to study English when he has free time.

He enjoys studying his English by reading ESL books out loud in order to both improve his pronunciation and to also develop his “english” ear to the sounds of English words. He typi cally reads one or two short edition ESL books every visit to the Library.

When he reads the books the Librarian assist him by modelling difficult words for him, providing positive reinforcement through encouragement and offering corrections to his pronunciation as required. Jae Hyun’s ambition is to speak English confidently and correctly with his new friends and teachers at the school. You can do it well Jae Hyun... fighting!!! Thank you

secondary examsFor the last 2 weeks our Secondary students across many year levels have been engaged in the studying and writing of their Cambridge Checkpoint and IGCSE, AS & A Level Mock Exams.

It has been a particularly grueling schedule for our Senior Secondary students with many of them having to write 2 exams every day.

All the teachers salute the students for their diligence work in preparing and writ-ing their exams. To our Senior Secondary students it is all your teachers sincere wish that your hard work now will be rewarded in October and November (when you write your Finals) with excellent results that you can be proud of.

Secondary French class

Bonjour, c’est la classe française! Hello, it is the French class!

In Year 11, we have Jasmine who is a motivated student and is very dedicated towards her French lessons. She will take her French IGCSE examination this term.

For the preparation, she has learned and revised the main grammars such as “présent, passé composé, imparfait, futur proche, futur” and reflexive verbs.

The main difficulty for French lessons is “la conjugaison” - the conjugation where you have to conjugate (change) the verb for each subject in the sentence. But, Jasmine is taking this difficulty as a challenge.

We wish her all the best in the upcoming examination. Bon courage, Jasmine.

In Year 8 and 9 French, we are studying about: my dream holidays, places around the world and celebrations in other countries. The students are very excited to learn more about places around the world and tourism destinations by using their terms in French.

The students are not only studying their vocabularies and grammars, they are also learning about the cultures in these other places.

Year 8 student Edward, is a brilliant beginner student who at the start of Term 3 took a big step into the “francophone world” by starting his French lessons.

He has studied about “Tout sur moi” which consists of personal information, phy-sical appearance, family and favourite subjects.

Bravo Jack, Georg, Edward and Charlie

Secondary Physics classIn Physics class the students have been busy all year stu-dying mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, atomic and nuclear physics. We work together at solving the simplified differential equations of Newton, Euler, Maxwell, Schrodinger and Dirac.

The students then are tasked with applying the theory they have learned in class towards experiments in the labs. Students are also challenged to find real world ways that Physics can be used to help their community busi-ness people to improve their businesses (food vendors, tricycles, etc.).

We have learned how to help the local community to save energy and effort by putting more load on the leading wheels than on the pushed wheels. Many tricycles and food vendors here in Jakarta do not use this solution and therefore waste a lot of resources. We are hoping for more achievements in Term 4.

Secondary Year 8 science class

Activity: Light travelling in straight lines and a rain-bow in the lab.

As the Year 8 Science Teacher I find so much fun to able to share my knowledge and experience about science when I am explaining to the students how it is ray of light travels in straight lines and produces a spectrum of multicolours.

A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicolored circular arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appearing in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.

It’s fun seeing how the light refracted as it entered the transparent prism and later exiting into a spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. I learnt an easy way to remember the color ROY G BIV.‘‘Edward’’

This activity was fun and we learned about rays of white light refracting on a prism. The ray of light transforms from a single color to becoming multicolor when it passes through the prism. “Georg”

It’s fun observing and learning about how a ray of light produces rainbow colors when travels through the prism.“Charlie”

I was really happy to do this experiment, seeing how light works with different types of shapes and sizes of prism. For me, it was interesting to learn and do that. I enjoyed the Activity ‘Light travelling in straight lines and a rainbow in the lab’.“Lina”
