In the gospel today, Jesus tells us a parable about the landowner and his workers: those hired at midmorning, those hired halfway through the day at noon, those hired at four o'clock, one hour before the day is over. And then he tells us how he paid them, first those who had worked one hour, then those who worked for five hours, then those who had worked for seven hours, and finally those who had worked the whole day. All of them were paid the same daily wage. Those who worked the whole day protested, saying: "Those last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and heat." And the owner answered them, "My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Are you envious because I am generous?" Jesus' parable today is not intended to give a moral guidance on labor-management negotiations or any justification for uncontrolled capitalism. Jesus tells us how God deals with people and how this is very different from human ways. His relationship with us considers much more than justice. The parable provides us with food for thought on how to avoid the power of envy and greed! The workers are dissatisfied not with what they received, but because others received as much. The workers might call their grievances just but they were motivated by envy! Envy is a social sin as well as a personal one. Envy's cousin is jealousy. However, "jealousy can be based on attraction (of an object); envy originates in hatred (for people). But envy goes beyond hatred. When we hate, we want to demolish what we see as bad; but with envy, we want to destroy what's good in people's lives. Envious people live in a perpetual state of focusing on what others around them have and what they themselves lack - mostly material things: big houses, fancy cars, stylish clothes, the best brands. We can be tempted to envy also when we see former sinners attain positions of eminence and when we observe people who are less talented than we advance in their careers. Envy can have a dehumanizing effect on those who are guilty of it…" The landowner's evocative response becomes an antidote to hunger for material positions, when he said, "ARE YOU ENVIOUS BECAUSE I AM GENEROUS?" God is generous; and his generosity is without measure - he is so extravagant in his love and mercy. We have to imitate God's generosity to remove envy in our lives. Generosity is an antidote to envy! Are you an envious person? If yes, today is the day for you to take the medicine of GENEROSITY! Get a life! BE GENEROUS…

will read and discuss these letters from Paul at a slow pace so that

everyone feels comfortable. Cost of the study books will be $7.50

Fall Dinner Announcement

For the health and safety of our volunteers and parish community, the

Altar Society has decided to cancel this year’s Fall Dinner. Though the Fall

Dinner is the Altar Society’s only fundraiser, the Committee felt that any risk was too much of a risk to

take. We ask that you prayerfully consider a

monetary donation directly to the Altar Society this year instead. Any

financial assistance is greatly appreciated since the Society will still have obligations to fulfill in order to

provide the support to the parish that we are built on. Donations can be

made to the Parish Office at P.O. Box 349, Scottsbluff NE 69363. Please make checks payable to St. Agnes

Altar Society.

THE LITURGY of the WORD

First Reading - Isaiah 55:6-9 Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near. Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked his thoughts; let him turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.

Responsorial Psalm Second Reading - Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a Brothers and sisters: Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ

Please stand Gospel Alleluia Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son. Gospel - Matthew 20:1-16a Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ’You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, ’Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ’Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ’You too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ’Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?” Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: Matthew 20:8-15

On the Way to Mass: Have you ever felt jealous of someone for having more than you do? Have you ever felt that you have been treated unfairly? On the Way Home From Mass: When have you ever received undeserved generosity? Living the Word: Create a chore chart for the week. Explain that some days will have more jobs than others. If you have more than one child, alternate their heavy days of chores. Decide on a small reward for the completion of the work, making sure each child receives the same reward no matter the amount or duration of work. Discuss how it makes each child feel to receive the same reward regardless of the work. If one does not have to work as hard, can we rejoice for that person? Or are we jealous? How can we be more generous with others? Sometime this week, make a list of how we can share our gifts, talents, and time with others.

Therefore, the 2020-2021 academic year will be a “catch-up” year as grades 8th-11th will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. All youth in grades 8th-11th will be given a Confirmation folder on 9/16/20 at the formation sessions. Please review the material in the folder as there are pertinent details in it. Library Room News By Lana Payne

It is wonderful to have everyone back at school! I have been busy in the library cataloging a variety of new books. The library is open to students with some changes to our past schedule. Each week I read to each class in their classroom. Students also have a special time for book checkout. All books are being quarantined three days when returned to the library. Students have been doing an outstanding job with mask wearing and social distancing while in the library. Due to health and safety concerns we have decided to postpone the Scholastic Book Fair until next spring. Book Fair dates will coincide with the week of second semester Parent Teacher Conferences, March 15-18, 2021. September 11th we held the kickoff for this school year’s reading incentive program: The 500,000 Minute Reading Challenge! We look forward to meeting and exceeding this challenge! Thank you for your encouragement and support!

Music Room News By Andrea Tritt

Welcome back, students!! In music, we hit the ground running! In the lower grades, we’ve been learning about the difference between beat and rhythm. We’ve been using rhythm sticks and bucket drums to play a steady beat and start playing easy rhythms. We have learned about dynamics from soft (piano) to loud (FORTE!) The students love to demonstrate these!! In the upper grades, we’ve been reviewing note value and playing beats and rhythms and some classes have begun composing their own rhythms! Our focus has been on fundamentals and playing more than singing. Singspirations has begun for the 2020-2021 school year!! We had auditions on September 11th and I’m happy to say we have 18 members this year! Old West Choir Fest is planned for November 7th. The event will look a lot different this year, more details will come out as the event date gets closer.

First Grade Class By Sharon Bird

The students in first grade are very enthusiastic and eager to learn. We have been learning class and the school procedures. We have St. Agnes School Spirit! In religion, we are learning that God is our Father and He loves us. We are so lucky to have Mrs. Calvert come to our classroom on Tuesdays to share the Word of God with us. We are learning so much from her. In science, we are discussing sound. We have discussed volume, pitch, vibration, and echolocation. We made pan flutes. Wow!!! The students followed all the directions and had a great amount of fun. What a wonderful learning experience!

The students have been learning about the tools that will be used when using Seesaw. We will soon be posting to our journals. In preparation for MAP testing, we did practice tests on the Chromebooks. This was a new learning experience for the first grade students. I am so proud of their efforts. We have a new student in our class. Her name is Heidi LaTowsky. Three birthdays were celebrated in August. Happy Birthday to Carson Windhorst, Courtni Schaff, and Calliopi Schaff. Thanks, parents, for studying spelling with your child. Please continue to read each day and study spelling!

What’s Happening at St. Agnes School………...

Celebrating 65 Years The 2020-2021 school year marks the 65th year of education at

St. Agnes School. For over 6 decades, St. Agnes has been touching lives through quality education and the development

of faith. During that time, hundreds of students have come through the doors and been impacted by the wonderful

community we call home. We are proud of each and every student and their accomplishments while at St. Agnes School

and the years beyond. We have produced professionals in multitudes of careers.

During these 65 years, a number of families with multiple generations have attended, which speaks highly of the pride our

families have for our school. We currently have 12 families (17 students) who are 2nd or 3rd generation attendees. How

amazing for such a small school! Thank you, St. Agnes families, for helping us continue the

tradition of providing a quality education in a faith-filled environment. May God bless us with another 65 great years!
