Even if you selected a major on your application to Tyler, you’ll need to officially declare a major through the Advising Center. You have two options:

What are the benefits of declaring a major? You’ll have a clear path to graduation.

You’ll have the added support of an advisor familiar with your major, employment options and transfer opportunities.

Declaring a major is a requirement of financial aid and many scholarship opportunities.

Learn more at www.jtcc.edu/services/advising-center.

Declare a Major through the Advising Center

Meet with an advisor in the Advising Center. Advisors can help you select a major based on your goals. If you are transferring from another college or university, bring a copy of your transcript with you when you visit the Advising Center.

Declare a major online. Can’t make it to campus to meet with Advising? Complete the form at www.jtcc.edu/declareonline, and our advisors will work with you to declare your major without coming to campus.

Determine the Need for Placement Tests4

PLACEMENT TESTSDECLARE A MAJOR

Placement tests help Tyler determine which math and English courses you need to take. If you have one of the following, you may not need to take the placement tests:

Prior college coursework in math and/or English,

Required scores on the PSAT, SAT or ACT, or

Required high school coursework and GPA within the last 5 years.

Advisors can help determine if you need to take placement tests. If you graduated from high school within the past five years, bring a copy of your high school transcript with you to the Advising Center.

If you take placement tests:

Practice before taking the tests. Save time and money by avoiding courses you could have tested out of by practicing.

There is no fee for placement tests.

No appointment is required.

Tests generally take 3-4 hours to complete.

Your Student ID number is required for placement testing.

Find practice tests, hours/locations of the Testing Centers and more at www.jtcc.edu/placement.
