Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time February 23, 2020 Reflection for the beginning of the Holy Season of Lent It is hard to believe that Ash Wednesday is this upcoming week. I al- ways look forward to Ash Wednesday and the holy season of Lent, probably because it is a time of reflection, renewal, conversion and preparation in our lives, a time that we can use to evaluate our lives of faith and our relation- ship with God. This year, Deacon John made the wonderful suggestion that we use the theme of FORGIVENESS this Lenten season. This weekend, we are handing out wonderful Lenten reflection books entitled FINDING FOR- GIVENESS IN LENT. Indeed, forgiveness is one of the hardest things we do as human beings, isn’t it? According to Mother Teresa, "If we really want to love we must learn how to forgive.” Hopefully, we will have a good conver- sation about forgiveness during Lent this year at St Jude. I want to encourage all of you to come at one of our Ash Wednesday Masses, which will be at 6:30 am, noon, and 6:00 pm in English and 7:30 pm in Spanish. In addition, we will have the Stations of the Cross each Fri- day following the 10:00 am Mass and at 6:00 pm during Lent, followed by our famous Knights of Columbus Fish Fry. To me, the Stations of the Cross on Friday, commemorating the day that Jesus died, is such a fitting Catholic tradition during Lent. Our Lenten Reconciliation service this year will be on Monday, March 2 from 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Our reconciliation service will be a “come and go” event this year. We will not have a service, but will have handouts for the examination of conscience that you can use in prepa- ration, and then you can go to one of the priests for the sacrament of rec- onciliation. You may come anytime during that two hour period for the sac- rament. Finally, I want to mention the traditional Lenten disciplines of fasting/ sacrifice, prayer, and works of charity. Lent is only fruitful as a time of preparation and renewal based upon the effort we put into it. I want all of us to have a fruitful Lenten season this year. Blessings to you as we end our weeks of Ordinary Time and as we enter the holy season of Lent.

Stewardship Thought

In today’s first reading, the Israelites are urged to love their neighbors as themselves. In the Gospel, Jesus spells out how we are to do that — to give generously to those who ask of us and not to turn our backs on those who seek to borrow.

Ministry Spotlight - Samantha Bags: Jesus tells us that on the last day we will be judged, not based on the sins we have committed but on whether we have giv-en drink to the thirsty, clothes to the naked, and time to those who are sick or imprisoned (see Mt 25:31-46). Samantha bags are an opportunity to live out this Gospel mandate by providing basic life essentials for homeless and destitute people in inner-city Jackson.

ASH WEDNESDAY

Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, prescribed by Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, along with strict instructions not to flaunt them in public to win recognition and praise (Matthew 6:1-18), have been em-braced by all the saints at the beginning of every Lent for almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many re-act with a grimace or slight shudder—even now, years after official obligations have been reduced to a minimum! No wonder the Eastern Rite’s “Lenten Announcement” sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! The Lenten Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from pas-sions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accomplishing them in love!” Saint John Chrysostom, whose feast is September 13, elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor per-son, take pity. An enemy, be reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent!
