CONTENTS

I am really pleased that you are thinking about studying here at RCS. This is where it all started for me and since I completed my Diploma in Acting, the institution has evolved into a diverse, beautiful, national establishment. It is a place that is continuously developing — as you will see within this prospectus — with new projects, new collaborations and new courses; further emphasising the unique student experience that you will only gain whilst studying here at RCS.

It may not be an easy journey and will require hard work; it will be a fulfilling journey and you will meet lots of like-minded friends. Whether you want to come to a weekly, weekend, credit-rated, spring, summer or autumn course; or enrol on an online, blended and distance learning course, it is all here at RCS and you will not regret it!

If you would like to talk to a member of the Short Courses team, please give us a call on +44 (0) 141 270 8213

Tell us what you thought about your time with us?

The best thing for me, coming from the Borders initially was

Glasgow itself! It was so different to where I grew up, it was

just such a big bustling city, a very creative city.

The people at Short Courses were fantastic. They instil a

brilliant work ethic that is still with me to this day, even

having worked in London for a while now, means that you

can tell if someone has come from RCS. I remember when

I initially graduated from RCS and started auditioning in

London, I was actually thanked for learning my lines! That’s

just something that I wouldn’t have thought twice about

thanks to the training that I got at RCS.

What advice would you give to others considering applying for a short course?

Well from my own experience I would say, do it and have

self-belief. What Short Courses tutors taught me was to not

take yourself too seriously. Take the job seriously but not

yourself. You’ve got to be a person that people want to work

with and you have to take ownership of your work.

Before applying successfully for the BA Acting programme at RCS, alumnus Jack Lowden studied our weekly drama courses for young people and then enrolled into the audition preparation course. Both equipped him well with the skills required to succeed on the BA Acting programme.

After graduating, Jack was cast in an international touring

production of Black Watch and played Eric Liddell in

Chariots of Fire. In 2014, at just 23 years old, he won an

Olivier Award for his performance as Oswald in Ibsen’s

Ghosts at the Almeida Theatre. This role also saw Jack

achieve the Ian Charleson Award for best classical stage

performance in Britain by a young actor. This is just a

small selection of Jack’s achievements to date and we are

confident there will be many more to come.

How did you know you wanted to attend our weekly drama classes?

I went to high school in the Borders and back then drama

wasn’t a subject available at my school. Fortunately, I had

a music teacher who was very enthusiastic about school

shows. Every year we’d do a musical of very high quality

and we all took it very seriously.

I don’t really have one of those romantic stories about

getting into the profession, I just don’t really remember

wanting to do anything else. So I started going to classes

when I was 12 years old.

JACKLOWDEN

Jack is an Olivier award-winning actor, successful on stage, television and film; and it all started here at Short Courses when he was 12 years old.

Short Courses Apprentice, Gordon Gow, met with Jack Lowden in London and discussed the impact that RCS Short Courses had on Jack’s life.

We asked three current BA Acting students, Nebli Basani (3rd year), Jamie Hughes (2nd year) and Sarah Miele (also 2nd year), what impact Short Courses had on their further studies, confidence and memories.

Nebli studied the Contemporary

Performance Skills weekly course and

took part in Short Courses from the

tender age of eight until he was 16

years old. Jamie was part of the weekly

drama courses from 14 until 16 years

old, before enrolling onto the Acting:

Audition Preparation intensive summer

school. Sarah attended the drama

weekly courses every Saturday whilst

in S5 and S6 at secondary school. Sarah

also benefitted from Acting: Audition

Preparation. All three had great

dynamism and worked together on

memorable devised pieces.

How did you hear about Short Courses at RCS?

S: My drama teacher told me about

RCS as an option for further education,

which is when I decided I wanted to

study acting. I started researching and

realised there were ways I could get

involved straight

away through Short Courses.

How did the short course help you get to where you are now?

J: The courses that I took gave me

confidence in my abilities and showed

me that there were alternatives to the

traditional university routes that most

of my friends were considering.

N: I really learnt how to collaborate

and work with others in a creative

atmosphere. They helped by widening

my experience of working with others

in workshops, as well as rehearsal

environments.

S: It opened doors that would have

otherwise been closed to me. It gave

me the chance to work with amazing

tutors and directors and see what the

School of Drama had to offer.

What are your fond memories of your time at Short Courses?

J: Performing to a sold out audience

on the Olivier stage at the National

Theatre in London … and every

weekend that I spent with like-

minded, creative friends.

N: I will always remember waking up

early on a Saturday to spend time with

what was a second family. I will never

forget that feeling.

S: There are loads! But performing

a show about child refugees and

unaccompanied minors called Fugee

to MSPs at the Scottish Parliament

stands out.

Within the BA Acting programme, what has been your highlight to date?

N: My highlight to date has to be

taking The Merchant of Venice to

Taiwan on an international tour. We

spent one week there. It was a life-

changing and altering experience and

a real adventure.

JADELOUDEN

We are committed and passionate about

supporting people in achieving their

creative ambitions. One of the access

projects in which we connect with young

people to discover and develop their

talents is through the Entry to the Creative

Industries schools programme.

Entry to the Creative Industries (ETTCI) is a

secondary schools programme run by RCS that

offers tailored, practical support to pupils who

are interested in progressing in the performing

or production arts.

Jade Louden is an example of just how

successful ETTCI is and what opportunities

are available whilst on the programme and the

doors it opens.

Jade participated in developmental activities

including application writing sessions, day

events within the Royal Conservatoire, interview

preparation courses and individual mentoring.

These enabled Jade to fully understand BA

Production Arts and Design requirements,

as well as begin to explore her own areas of

interest within the arts and design.

CORE DRAMA CLASSESAdults, children and young people

“ Really excellent course for giving children confidence, expanding their imagination, making them thinking creatively about current world circumstances. ” Parent of a child at Weekly Drama, 2015

Every Saturday afternoon September 2015 — June 2016

After core drama classes, secondary school aged

students have the opportunity to take a choice class

in the afternoon. Choice classes allow you to study

a specialist subject such as: Musical Theatre, Film-

making, Devised Theatre or Acting with Text.

During these afternoon classes, you work with expert

tutors who have in-depth knowledge about each of

the specialisms.

Acting with Text

Are you more into Shakespeare than site-specific

performance work? Acting with Text allows you

to interpret classical and contemporary texts and

perform them in new ways.

Devised Theatre

For students who want to write and perform;

this class is for the creative amongst you. Explore

your world, past events, contemporary issues and

yourself through contemporary theatre practices.

Film-making

Do you love film? This class explores the skills

needed to make short films, examining everything

from initial concepts to final editing and production.

Musical Theatre

Develop your skills in acting, singing and dance

with this class which requires all three disciplines

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

We want to ensure that as many people as possible can access the performing and production arts learning and teaching that is offered at RCS through Short Courses.

Agnes Allan BursaryThis bursary can offer some financial support to anyone, regardless of age

or stage of development, and right across the RCS subject areas of dance,

drama, music, production, screen and teaching skills.

James McAvoy Drama ScholarshipsBAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is a

graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior

Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience

the world-class drama training at RCS as he did. Applicants must be 25 years or under, solely applying for a drama course and a resident in Scotland.

Drama at 60 ScholarshipsFor promising theatre and screen practitioners, we encourage you to

apply for this scholarship. It is specifically for people who want to develop

their skills with RCS, and are considering further study or a career in the

performing or production arts in the future. Deadline for applications is

Monday 24 August 2015.

Further details on each of these three schemes can be found online: rcs.ac.uk/shortcourses/financialsupport

Inclusive. Dynamic. Committed. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland welcomes a diverse population of students and staff. We believe that excellence can be achieved through recognising and celebrating the value of every individual. We are committed to promoting equality in all of our activities and aim to provide a vibrant performing, learning, teaching, working and research environment that respects the diversity of students and staff, enabling them to achieve their full potential, contribute fully and to derive maximum benefit and enjoyment from their involvement in the life of the Conservatoire and beyond.

We are committed to equality of opportunity both as an education institution and as an employer. Equality of opportunity means striving to ensure that no student or member of staff receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, actual or perceived religion or belief, sex and actual or perceived sexual orientation.
