For anyone interested in a leadership position on res in 2016, it is

highly recommended that you attend the “You the Man”

presentation that is coming up in Burwood.

You the Man is a theatre-based program that highlights how

bystanders can interrupt cycles of relationship violence and

abuse. The program comprises a 35-minute play followed by a

moderated discussion with a panel of local experts from the

host community. The program empowers men and women to

step out of a passive bystander role and practise safe interven-

tion.

More than 1700 people attended You the Man performances

in Victoria in 2013-14. 80% of participants said seeing You the

Man increased their sense of being able to take action on be-

half of someone else. Come and see it for yourself!

Burwood performance: 21 July 2015, Richard Searby Room. Re-

freshments from 12 o'clock and performance from 12.30 to 2.30

pm. Register here. .

diversity/campaigns-networks-events

Once you have registered, please forward your confirmation

email to [email protected] to let us know. Jono will be tak-

ing a list and attending the event himself to see who is willing to

commit to becoming a positive leader on res in 2016.

It is accepted that residents at some time during their stay at the resi-

dences will accidentally lock themselves out of their room.

If this should happen, you will need to go the residences

reception office in order to receive access to your room.

It is not acceptable to chock doors open as this is unsafe

and can cause damage to the door.

If any resident is locked-out of their unit for a third time, they will be

charged $10. They will also be charged $10 for every subsequent lockout.

Q: What did the duck say to the waitor?

A: Put it on my bill

If you have an appropriate joke or limerick that you’d like

featured in the bulletin, send it through to Amy: amy-

Are you a resident of MB Building having difficulty working your range hood fan above

your stove?

Take the easy steps below!:

1. Reach underneath the range hood 2. Gently slide it out towards you till it

clicks in.

3. The light and fan should automatically start running.

It is essential you have the range hood on whenever you are using your stove in order to

avoid fire alarms!

If you find your range hood is still not working, please submit a Maintenance Request!

PREVENTING FIRE

ALARMS

The fire safety system on res is incredibly sensitive and directly linked to the fire

brigade.

The resident responsible for a fire unit(s) calls out shall be liable for the cost

and in cases where no individual is identified the Residence manager reserves

the right to apportion the cost across all the residents of the unit involved.

Please take care with the following to minimise disruption and to ensure eve-

ryone’s safety

1. When cooking:

a. Open windows

b. ALWAYS make sure the extractor fan is on by pulling out the range

hood

c. Cook on the back two burners when using a frypan. (When us-

ing the front two burners, the smoke is more likely to set off the

alarm)

d. Use a small amount of cooking spray, not oil.

2. Do not use aerosol deodorant, hairspray or hair straighteners in your

bedrooms. Only use these in the bathrooms of your units

3. Do not smoke anywhere inside Village units or the MB building.

Page 9: New resi bulletin t2 oweek

9

If a smoke alarm is set off, it will make a high pitch sound. You then have 60 sec-

onds to attempt to disperse the smoke by:

• Turning the appliance off (if applicable)

• Opening windows

• Putting extractor fan on

• Fanning the detector with a tea towel, book or folder

DO NOT open front doors or bedroom doors as this is likely to result in trigger-

ing the hallway and bedroom detectors.

If you are successful, the alarm will reset, the beeping will stop and the fire bri-

gade will not be called.

If you are not successful in clearing the smoke, the system will go into full evacu-

ation mode requiring the evacuation of all residents and triggering the auto-

matic attendance of the fire brigade.

If ever you hear the evacuation tones, DO NOT assume it is a false alarm. You

MUST VACATE IMMEDIATELY.

The evacuation meeting points are:

• Up on the grass out the front of Building LA (MB Students)

• Gardener’s Creek (BSV Students)

It is resident’s responsibility to empty both bins in their units/apartments

before they get too full.

For MB ressies, please empty them into the rubbish

and recycling shoots at the end of your hallways.

For BSV ressies, please empty your rubbish and

recycling into the bigger bins outside of your

laundry.

The cleaners will empty your rubbish bins each time they clean, but they will

not touch recycling. They also cannot dispose of your rubbish if the bags are

too full.

Emptying your bins on a regular basis will ensure your unit stays hygienic and

that your bags of rubbish will fit in the shoots and bigger bins.

To ensure all of your mail arrives at the Resi Office, please use one of the
